Blue Jays Designate Anthony Castro

By Connor Byrne | January 21, 2021 at 3:37pm CDT

The Blue Jays have designated right-hander Anthony Castro for assignment, Scott Mitchell of TSN tweets. The move clears space for the signing of righty Tyler Chatwood, whose one-year, $3MM contract is now official.

It was a short run on the Blue Jays’ 40-man roster for Castro, whom they claimed off waivers from the Tigers on Dec. 7. Castro had been with the Tigers since 2012, and he underwent Tommy John surgery as a member of the organization in 2015, but he did work his way back and make his major league debut last season. However, the 25-year-old threw just one inning then.

Castro notched a combined 112 1/3 frames in Double-A ball from 2018-19, but control was a major problem for him then. He walked 77 hitters during that span, which somewhat overshadowed his 120 strikeouts, en route to a 4.73 ERA. FanGraphs’ Eric Longenhagen wrote Thursday that Castro has a “fantastic frame and modest but relevant arm strength (lots of 92-93). His heater has natural cut; his slider lacks depth.”

Pick him back up Tigers. Schrieber and Funkhouser should’ve been waived before Anthony.

The Tigers may still like him and were probably hoping he’d slip through waivers. We’ll know shortly if they want a do-over and claim him back. I think teams value the arm and potential but also believe he needs some more seasoning in AAA.

I think this might all be a ploy to break Fisher’s heart. Keep him on the roster… keep him on the roster… then, bam! He gets DFAed one day before the regular season.

Somewhere there’s a moron bragging about how he isn’t racist! Somewhere there’s a universe where your comments are funny or relevant. Somewhere you can post without everyone remembering the previous posts where you embarrassed yourself!

Alas the Blue Jays were finally not interested in someone, and cleared space for the imminent signing of the humble and mild-tempered pitcher Trevor Bauer

Not sure what the fascination with Fisher is. He should have been DFA’d long ago

At the time, the Jays paid a lot for him and Atkins went on record saying players with Fishers skills and ability to play all 3 outfield positions were rare. He has awesome hand speed though the strike zone. It’s a pity that he can see the ball.

Fisher has talent. Who knows, he could be a late bloomer. I don’t think they can afford a roster spot to wait for him this year though. He’ll probably end up with the Orioles or something.

I would be surprised if anyone claimed him this time. He has some potential, if he can get his control issues ironed out. But he has little experience above AA. He would be a good minor league signing and then convert him full time to the pen and see if he can make it that way.

He should sign here or in a place without much AAA depth so he can get a good look, some coaching, yet still have a fairly clear path to MLB if he figures something out.
