Mets Designate Guillermo Heredia For Assignment

By Mark Polishuk | February 21, 2021 at 6:11pm CDT

The Mets have designated outfielder Guillermo Heredia for assignment.  The move was made to create a 40-man roster spot for Kevin Pillar, whose contract with the team is now official.

Heredia appeared in seven games for the Mets after being claimed off waivers from the Pirates in August.  All told, the outfielder hit .212/278/.394 over 36 plate appearances for Pittsburgh and New York.  It isn’t far off the numbers (.240/.317/.342) Heredia posted in his four previous big league seasons, over 1101 PA with the Mariners (from 2016-18) and Rays (2019).

The 30-year-old can provide depth at all three outfield positions, so the Mets are surely hoping Heredia goes unclaimed and can remain in the farm system as a backup option in the event of injury.  The Mets are fairly crowded with outfield options on the active roster, but Heredia and non-roster invite Mallex Smith project as the first men up from Triple-A if a replacement is needed.

Sherzer isn’t going to like facing the Mets lineup. Especially now that he is on the decline.

Yank, continue to listen to FAN where spelling doesn’t count. Who cares if a “c” is missing outside of you? I butcher names so I started abbreviating by initials. Base on the thread, everyone knows who is being referenced. Could also have been just a typo. Loosen up.

“Scherzer is on the decline” is such a cold take that my entire state went into the next ice age.

Scherzer has good shot at reaching 3000 K this year (2784)
        and 100 HBP (86)

@MetsFan22: As a fellow Mets fan, please stop talking. In the last full season of baseball (2019), Scherzer led the league in FIP and K/9. He still one of the best in baseball and is tough as nails.

And in 23 career starts against the Mets, he’s 12-5 with a 2.70 ERA, 12 K/9, and a 0.933 WHIP (no immediately available advanced stats on b-ref; I don’t feel like digging deeper but I think we can assume they’re great, too).

        Plus he’s got a ring.

Scherzer is amazing no question top 10 SP in the league but let’s not act like some of those career starts didn’t have John mayberry jr and Kirk newinheis as the meat of the lineup. He’ll still do well cause he’s a stud but I doubt he’s looking forward to facing this lineup

and a lot of them didnt. most of his starts vs the Mets have come since joining the NL in 2015. (ie the NL pennant year for the Mets) yeah, maybe he faced a bad player once or twice. so does every SP. geez guys cmon.

@rct, now, now, don’t you go bringing up facts, mf22 does not care for those.

In addition to their Scherzer nonsense, I haven’t seen a single projection that has the Mets better than the Yanks. So they are incorrect all around.

My guess is the opposite. Real champions enjoy the competition and I’m thinking a healthy Scherzer will thrive on the challenge. Same thing with deGrom.

Lol, how is he on the decline? Because he struggled last season? I remember you saying that 2020 didn’t really count when we were talking about Amed Rosario and his 2020 struggles. But when it’s a division rival, it’s a different story?

I figured he might be a roster casualty once Almora and Pillar were signed. I think the Mets can cut him for a portion of his pay owed due to arbitration salaries not being guaranteed until a certain point?

It’s not, it’s actually great! Best organization, most championships in all of sports, most storied franchise in all of sports, best players to ever grace MLB – I mean really, but I do like to keep up on all things baseball because I love the sport. By the way how did you know I was……… OH, you were talking to… got it. Okay, never mind.

It’s still amazing to me how some people (MetsMan) seem to think that being a fan of a particular team somehow makes them cool or superior to other people and gives them ammo to talk trash. You’ve done NOTHING to further the cause, MetsMan. You have NOTHING to do with their success, and the fact that it gives you an ego boost is nothing short of pathetic

@MetsManMetsFan86- I find it amusing how some Met fans think their team is so great. I mean your name says it all. You haven’t won a championship since 1986. So everyone can see why you want to keep it moving. I’d want to also. That’s a lot of years without a ring.

Yank4Life: It’s good that they’re excited; they should be. They’ve done quite a bit comparatively, scored Lindor when we arguably should have, and they’re passionate about their team.

The reason for the angry response is because there is that hint of doubt – well, three, actually (SD, LAD, & NYY) – and it’s unnerving when your team is as good as it will be in this century, but still probably fifth best in the league, with everyone healthy and performing at peak levels.

Please, find me a comment where I have touted how good they are going to be. All I’m saying is that it must be miserable to have to non-stop check Mets posts about a dude that is AAAA depth that they optioned. If you weren’t concerned about what the Mets were doing, why continually comment? Never once have I boasted we were gonna win a chip, or even the division for that matter. Do I think we have a better team then last year? Sure! But I’m not writing checks my rear-end can’t cash for the Mets.

I hope so. He and Pillar will mainly be there for defensive replacements and to take on lefty pitching. The starting OF will feature all lefties who are below average to average defensively, but it’s possible a few infielders may spend sometime in the outfield. Dom Smith will probably be in left most of the time to keep his bat in the lineup, but I’m sure McNeil, Davis, and Villar will see some time out there as well. If the Mets decide to go with a stronger double-play combination in Lindor and Guillorme, it’s probable that McNeil will get the bulk of the time in left.

Yeah, I really like him and was hoping the Yankees would consider him for fourth OFer. I love good defensive guys; they are undervalued because of how the game is played, or expected to be played, with heavy offense.

He’s a really good acquisition imho, and although many disagree because of his advanced metrics, particularly with hitting, he’s an exciting defender to watch run down balls.

Also, is it me or does it seem like you guys need a 50-man roster with all the OF you all have?

Yeah .. I read about the Yankees considering Almora. They are probably the best decision makers in the league. So it’s a good indicator of Almora on the plus side. In January, John Griffin over at SBNation wrote a scathing article on the kid. Really nasty. I hope he proves that duffus writer wrong. Almora also endured steady BS from Maddon while with the Cubs. Tough to develop with that going on. Almora is just a limited fit in today’s homerun or strikeout me me me offenses.
