Blue Jays Activate Robbie Ray From Injured List

By Anthony Franco | April 12, 2021 at 11:15am CDT

TODAY: Ray has been officially activated, the Jays announced.

APRIL 11: The Blue Jays are preparing to activate left-hander Robbie Ray from the injured list in advance of their upcoming series against the Yankees, manager Charlie Montoyo tells reporters (including Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet). He’ll get the start tomorrow evening against New York.

Ray re-signed with Toronto over the offseason after the Jays acquired him in a midseason trade with the Diamondbacks. His 2021 regular season debut was delayed a couple weeks by a bruised elbow he suffered during the spring. With Ray making his return to the rotation, the Jays will bump Tanner Roark to the bullpen for now, per Montoyo.

In other Toronto injury news, star outfielder George Springer is still not nearing a return from his recent quad injury (via Nicholson-Smith). Springer’s debut with the Jays’ was delayed by an oblique strain, and he hurt his quad while rehabbing the original injury. The three-time All-Star has now recovered from the oblique problem, but the leg issue will keep him out of the lineup for a while longer.

I hope Roark can be more effective as a long reliever, but something tells me he’s just finished in the majors. He hasn’t looked good in a long time. Montoya needs to keep him on a very short leash because every single win counts.

He will most likely only see action in games like last night, or if a pitcher is injured during a game

I’d usually be willing to at least entertain the notion that Roark was victimized by a weird 2020 season and small sample thus far in 2021. But anyone who’s actually watched him pitch knows he’s toast as a starter. He has no out pitch and no juice on his fastball. His arsenal currently features a below average heater with a collection of cement mixers. His only chance is to go max effort out of the pen, and focus on spinning his best breaking pitches as hard as he possibly can. More than one career has been resurrected that way, so we’ll see.

I couldn’t agree more. His stuff just isn’t there. Hopefully he can give some decent innings out of the pen, but i must admit, im not overly optimistic.

I think he’ll be fine, soaking up the Tommy Milone innings. Team’s are going to need relievers that can soak up three or four innings in blow out games.

Obviously you didn’t watch the game. Again.

Ray was inconsistent, lacked command and location against the Yankees B lineup. Blame the layoff, Ray was being Ray last night.

Yanks have scoreboard on the Jays. They can gloat for now. Recognize.

B team .. were you watching the game. Go look at their 1-6 .

The last part was that your attempt to be hip.. best try again if so.

It doesn’t matter where they play, Dunedin, Buffalo, or even Toronto their not winning anything this season. Get used to losing. Ryu is no ace, trade for Luis Castillo, nothing scary in that rotation at all.

With this being said Roark and Stripling were never meant to be anything more then our #5-6 pitchers whereas Kluber-Taillon were supposedly the Yankee #2 and #3 and all the Yankee doodle dandies were on here pre-season boasting of having 3 Cy Young candidates. Big difference my friend.

I feel are pitching will be be better then yours during the 162 games. Kluber is a late starter anyway, takes him awhile. We’ll see about Taillon. Severino comes back later on in the summer. I’d be shocked if your BlueJays win the AL East. They definitely got a shot at a Wild Card.

@MarkoRock68- true be told, I wouldn’t mind seeing the Jays instead of the Rays in the ALCS. I know your a die hard, just stay that way. It was good you didn’t sign Paxton, thought you’d re-sign Walker though. I truly didn’t see this team starting this well. I find the Jays entertaining to watch, and I like Snyder and Martinez calling the games. If you trade for Luis Castillo or Zac Gallen, I think you will be neck and neck with the Yankees. Best of luck in 2021 and beyond. Yes, nothing wrong with the trash talking. We obviously can handle it. Lol. I am more worried about the Yankees offense right now more then the pitching for some reason. Taillon or Kluber, one of them must come thru. If not it’s curtains. Ttyl.

The Robbie Ray grunts are back and will be on full display. Doubt he’ll be stretched too long in his first outing.

Tanner Roark is the example as to why too many Jays fans hoping for a return to old form don’t watch him enough. His stuff isn’t there. Last year his stuff wasn’t there. If you watched you’d know, and you didn’t. Many of you, and some who’ve posted on this thread, felt Roark’s 2020 was just a fluke. It wasn’t.

Can’t blame Atkins for acquiring him but could blame him for the amount of money. But both Roark and Anderson were supposed to be bridges to when the Jays contend so the moves were understandable since they were going for the slow crescendo.

George is a fine player but with Covid why sign him to such a long term top dollar contract. Jays are fine in the OF and Davis could be quite good. If you have to spend save it on a SP who would be available at the trade deadline. Semien was expensive but at least not long term. My real venom is for the dozy Raptors President who has done nothing right in two years. OG and Siakam paying way too much and then Lowry turning down a decent PG like Schroeder. Even now he should see if Kyle will take a buyout and save the Raptors a few million. At least he was smart enough to take Gary Trent Jr. I will give him that.
