Braves Place Chris Martin On 10-Day Injured List

By Mark Polishuk | April 10, 2021 at 10:40am CDT

The Braves announced that right-hander Chris Martin has been placed on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to April 7) due to inflammation in his throwing shoulder.  Righty Jacob Webb was called up from the alternate site to take Martin’s 26-man roster spot.

Martin hasn’t pitched since April 4, when he was removed from a game after feeling some numbness in his right fingers.  The issue wasn’t deemed serious enough for an MRI and Braves manager Brian Snitker said just yesterday that he hoped Martin would be available as early as today’s game against the Phillies, so the shoulder inflammation could be a relatively new issue.  With the backdated placement in mind, Atlanta could simply be taking the cautious route and giving Martin another week to get fully ready before getting him back on the mound.

Acquired in a deadline trade in July 2019, Martin has a 2.65 ERA, 29.65% strikeout rate, and a superb 3.5% walk rate over 37 1/3 innings in an Atlanta uniform.  The 34-year-old is filling a key role in the bullpen as a set-up man, and it’s possible Martin might receive the occasional save chance himself depending on how fluid the Braves want to be with their relief alignment.

How does Puig help the bullpen?

If I could swap Ender for Puig on the bench, I’d do it in a heartbeat … but this has nothing to do with the bullpen and Chris Martin lol

No team in baseball wants Greene. one he thinks he worth 5 million a year.

Yo for real. Need to go get him. But this is an ole Dallas move the Braves did a few years ago. Wait until mid season, and offer him a dirt cheap deal for the remainder of the season. I’d rather just go get him now.

Putting Chris Martin in the injured list is a Cold Play by the Braves.

The guy they just called up from the alt site is better, younger & cheaper than Greene.

RunDMC, I agree although I think Webb is not much better. But that doesn’t mean we still don’t need to go get Greene in my humble opinion. I feel the bullpen lacks a little legit depth although they have down well to this point … so what do I know

Webb is every bit as good if not better than Greene. Also what suggests the Braves need to waste several million for another relief pitcher, surely it isn’t their 1.99 bullpen ERA that’s 2nd best in the majors?

“Better” not “much better”. Webb looked great in ST and would have been rostered but he has options, while some other guys making the final cut didn’t have options (Nate Jones). Webb has the swing-and-miss stuff that Greene doesn’t (or hasn’t recently), which may be part the reason his agent hasn’t cashed a commission check. If nothing else, while Webb doesn’t have the benefit of Greene’s MLB experience (priceless) — Webb should be fresher spending all ST and at the alt site, while Greene hasn’t faced live action since last year.

Jacob Webb should have made the team to start with he was great last year and played well in the playoffs. He has proven himself.
