Mariners Claim Jack Mayfield

By Steve Adams | April 27, 2021 at 2:31pm CDT

The Mariners announced Tuesday that they’ve claimed infielder Jack Mayfield off waivers from the Angels and optioned him to their alternate site. Shed Long was transferred to the 60-day injured list in a corresponding roster move.

The slick-fielding Mayfield now joins his third American League West club. He was signed and developed by the Astros but found his way to the Angels via some offseason waiver maneuverings — briefly stopping in Atlanta but not making it to a Spring Training game before being waived a second time. He’ll give the Mariners some extra infield depth, which is needed in part due to Long’s lingering injury.

Mayfield, 30, appeared in a pair of games with the Angels but was hitless in three trips to the plate. He’s a career .165/.193/.275 hitter in the Majors, but that unsightly batting line comes in a sample of just 115 plate appearances, so it’s hard to glean too much from it. Mayfield carries a much more palatable .268/.325/.475 output in parts of four Triple-A seasons, and he’s regarded as a solid defender who can handle shortstop, second base or third base as needed. He still has a minor league option remaining beyond this year, so he can be an up-and-down depth option for the Seattle infield if he performs well enough to stick on the 40-man roster.

If you know how to field it he ball you will always have a spot in AAA. Helps pitchers confidence working with a defense behind him.

That .165 slash line says he is destined to be a Yankee. But he can’t compete with Odor’s 30% strikeout rate so there is competition. Why hasn’t Cashman laid claim to him? He could start tonight.

Because he isn’t injury prone or the “ Genius” Cashman would of already had him, and overpaid him the next 6 years.

The Yankees fans completely going 180 and turning on Cashaman in 20 games is easily my second favorite part of the 2021 season so far.

JeDi needs to get over the halos already. He is so obsessed to know what’s going on it’s sad really, that’s why he also signed Middleton and Dirtstarr lol

Last night- 2 men on, one out in the 8th inning, down by 3 Runs….next up- Mariners 2B Dylan Moore who has surprising pop and speed but has yet to get going in 62 AB’s this year. Moore gets pulled by Servais in a big spot in the game. A sure sign that the M’s are still trying to find the answer at 2B. A hard lesson for the kid who had a 138 wRC+ in the 60g 2020 season.

That SSS in 2020 was enough to bring his ADP down in this years MLB Drafts from 300> to around 120th- 150th in MLB Fantasy rankings depending on the league formats. Perhaps Jerry Dipoto will soon be like most fantasy managers- already making plans to replace D-Mo at 2B. If Coach Perry can work his magic, Ty France could play 2B regularly with Haggerty and Moore filling in?

M’s could add a (good) INF at the deadline or enter the FA sweepstakes this next offseason? We’re in a really good spot now….

Mayfield’s slash line looks alot worse than it really is. He does provide solid defense at all 3 positions though. He did a pretty good job with the Astros but with Altuve and Bregman both signed long term he was just simply locked out. I had heard he was working out during the offseasons at the corner outfield spots as well to give him even more versatility. The M’s might keep him up for a while. I wish him well. His nickname in Houton was “SuperJack” for some reason.
