Yankees Option Domingo German

By TC Zencka | April 10, 2021 at 10:40pm CDT

The Yankees optioned Domingo German to their alternate site following today’s game, the team announced. A corresponding roster move has not yet been announced.

German’s first start on the season came on April 4th against the Blue Jays. The 28-year-old surrendered three runs in three innings, including a pair of home runs. It was German’s first start since posting 2.0 fWAR during the 2019 season. He went four innings today against the Rays giving up another pair of long balls. His entire line featured eight hits, one walk, four earned runs and five strikeouts.

The Yankees have not been getting much length out of their starters during their current three-game losing streak. As much as this move may very well be about German, the Yankees may also just want to add a fresh arm. Corey Kluber went just 2 1/3 innings on Friday, a game after Jameson Taillon was bumped after 4 2/3 innings in a game that went to extras.

First of all, I’m a jays fan, not a Red Sox fan. It’s really quite sad that some fans are willing to support morally corrupt players because of their skill. As soon as the Osuna issue happened, he was gone. Apparently the Yankees don’t care about that though.

“German’s now-vacated spot in the rotation won’t come around again until Friday, April 16. The Yankees are scheduled to host the Rays that night. The date matters, because pitchers who are optioned to the minors must spend 15 days on the farm before they’re allowed to be recalled. (The exceptions are if an injury occurs or the player is joining the roster as the 27th player for a doubleheader.) It is worth noting the Yankees have the previous day off, meaning they could go without a fifth starter until the following week, if they so desired.”

He looks like he can handle it to me, but we won’t know until he’s up & playing with the Big Boys for an entire season.
        I’ve high hopes for Garcia.

German always looks rugged in the first inning & he can’t seem to keep the damn ball in the damn yard. Meaning: I don’t think he’s cut out for the pen.

When it became apparent that some of our important players didn’t want German in the locker room is when he became an insurmountable problem for us. I’m pro second chances. I’m also pro “listen to my players”.

If we never see him in pinstripes again, I’d be just fine with that.

I think German will be on a short leash and get traded if he struggles. I agree Britton speaking out was a big deal with him having a bigger picture of situation than any of us. Yankees players just don’t speak out often. Also when Voit gave Bruce a ringing endorsement during ST strongly signaled to me that he would break camp. I really want to see Monty emerge.

You are so right! The lack of offense is the real problem aided by a considerably below average defense. If you think about it they have exactly 1 player that is durable and very good on both sides of the ball …. DJ Very poorly constructed roster.

        True, we got blanked today.
Happens. I got shut out goose hunting yesterday evening. That’s just how it goes some days.

But – just yesterday – the Yanks put up 5 runs which really should be enough to win a game. We don’t look all that good defensively, & the lack of length is troubling. However, that’s not really a Yankeecentric problem as it’s been the norm with almost all teams.

The offense will be fine. Remember, they were coming off 7,7, & 4 run outings coming into the Ray’s series.

& some of our young relievers have been fire. Yanks’ll be okay.
        I promise.

If you are going to cite “facts” you should at least try & be accurate. But then that’s not how you – personally – use that word.

8 or so games of the 162 game season. If anything, they tell us little about what to expect in the AL East. I think that it will be interesting to watch it develop over time. The injury thing is real, there will be a lot of them. COVID might decline but it’s not going away. And teams on paper are not what they appear to be, last season has to be taken with two grains of salt. Just my thoughts on the AL East.

@Joe Says… @Ducky Buckin Fent- no need to hit the panic button and trade Gleyber Torres and Jasson Dominguez. It’s still early on. I’m glad this is happening now instead of September. Didn’t Castillo give up 9 runs his lst start? Now we’re complaining about German struggles? Lol. Maybe we can acquire Story and Marquez at the deadline. There is no reason why a package of Voit, Andujar, Schmidty, Vizcaino, and Volpe can’t get that done. Don’t forget Severino will be coming back in the summer also. I like Castillo but not at the price the Reds want. I like Story but not for Gleyber. Take it easy fellas.

I’m not overly panicked. My thoughts on the possible Torres Castillo trade comes from before the season started. And as I said, I would have done it if the cost didn’t exceed just Torres and some smaller pieces. My thinking being, it’s easier to replace position players than starting pitchers.
I’m also dead set against (almost) any trade involving Voit. Voit is one of my favorite players and I’d hate to see him leave.

Most of us Yankee fans talk about Severino as the second coming….So I mean “who” and what is it that will be coming back? What we will be getting…….He hasnt pitched in two years. I do agree with you about not doing a Story/Gleyber trade, even though Gleyber is defensively horrendous.!!! Story will be paid for his stats at Coors. The splits on Story, home/away. They are night and day. That would be as in Great and not great

@Joe Says… hey I hear you about Voit. It’s funny. Torres is my favorite player. But as you can see, it’s definitely not looking like shortstop is the answer for him. I don’t want to trade a 23 year old for a 29 year old shortstop who is about to become 30. I would like to put Gleyber back at 2nd, put Urshela at SS, and try DJ at 3rd. Then Voit stays at lst when he is finally healthy. I like Castillo. But not at the price of Dominguez or Torres. I don’t blame the Reds for asking for them for their best player though. Be well Joe, and let’s get the W today.

@yankee766766- yes,Torres is really bad at shortstop. I definitely would like to try Urshela at shortstop and put Gleyber back at 2nd. My preference is to try to sign Story or Seager for 7 or 8 years in the off-season. Not trading Dominguez, Torres, Peraza or Gomez. The Yankees should try to trade for Marquez at the deadline. Maybe Schmidty or Deivi, Gill or Vizcaino, and Andujar. I wouldn’t offer much more then that for him though. Zac Gallen is a guy I would keep an eye on if he can get healthy this season, he probably would be cheaper then Castillo. Gallen is better and cheaper then Marquez.

’17-’19 the Yanks were a top 3 scoring offense in MLB every season. Even last year they finished 4th with 315 runs.

We can argue over the aesthetics of TTO offenses. But to deny their efficiency is easily – especially in the Yanks case – debunked.

This may have been one of those.

No team has embraced the TTO devil with as much fervor as our Yanks. As such, we fully understand how hideous it can be to watch. I sometimes liken it to if the ultimate evolution of offenses in the NFL was “3 yards & a cloud of dust” as opposed to the modern spread offensive sets. Bet football wouldn’t be as popular.

But stuffing your lineup with these guys is the easiest way to ensure productivity. Again: yes ugly as sin. However, by bottom line results: it works.

Does anyone remember how bad the Orioles where last week , when they swept the Redsox?

How is anyone crowing about the Yankees pitching after playing a team that’s OPS less than 500? And crowing about their offense that scored 7,7 and 4 runs against basically a number 3 starter and 2/ 5th and 6 starters?

Not only can’t they hit, they have 3 of the worst defensive position players in the American League. Torres, Bruce, and Sanchez.

Expect this throughout the season. The Yankees will rotate German, Garcia, King and Schmidt through the 5th rotation spot.

German is not starter material. He could be an effective middle reliever like Cessa and Loaisaga, but they keep trying to fit a square peg in a round hole and make him be something he is not.

Lots of teams are going to have rotation issues this season. Another reason LAD are heavily favored. NYY are going to sink or swim based on the young and or less heralded arms in the pen

Yesterday kluber got doubled up by rays while making more money for that start than whole rays team for the day. Something bout that rays strategy!

Kluber was a horrible signing. He’s way past his prime, and he’s on an innings limit. They would’ve been better off bringing back Tanaka or Happ in that spot.

He hasn’t been good since 2018. This is 2021. That’s far from just a 2 game sample.

I’m an Indians fan, and I will tell you to have some patience. Kluber *always* sucks the first couple weeks of the season, his velocity will be down, but in the past he ramps it up and by May he’s same old Klubot.

Age and injury may have robbed him of that permanently, but it’s too early to say for sure.

March/April has definitely been Klubers worst month, but his stats for March/April are still better than most pitchers best months.

Lol the reactions and comments from people after 8 games is hilarious. It’s been i8 games. Less then 5% of the season.

Stop overreacting and let the season play out a bit

There’s an awful lot of blood in the water on this site for 154 games remaining in the season. What’s everyone going to do for an encore?

Gosh. I remember a certain sub-section of Yankees fans were claiming that they would have a top-5 rotation in the Majors in 2021; some extra delusional ones even went as far as to say top-3.

Of course those of us on planet earth saw Gerrit Cole, some promising but green young prospects, a near the end of the line Corey Kluber, a guy coming back from back-to-back Tommy John Surgeries, and a pretty suspect human being that just got sent down in Domingo German. So yeah, not top-5.

Did they bring back Tanaka? I could’ve sworn they did but I haven’t seen his name anywhere.

Obviously you can make the “ERA argument” but c’mon, most starters aren’t lasting deep into games and lets be honest, it doesn’t look like an area of strength moving forward.

But hey! They got good prospects and they avoided the Paxton landmine.

The unearned runs are the issue. It’s great to point out the ERA, but the errors have proven costly. Not doing themselves any favors there.

The whole of baseball is scoring more runs than the other team in the same game. All that runs scored and runs against over a sum of games reveals is the possibility of future success or failure. The possibility. You have to let it play out. Some teams are just as happy to lose 8 to 2 as they are to lose 6 to 2. They are willing to throw inferior pitchers into those games to save the better pitchers for the wins. Likewise some teams are just as happy to win 6 to 2 as they are to win 8 to 2. They don’t feel they have to stack their lineup every game. It’s called pacing your roster for 162 games and hopefully the postseason. So don’t get all excited about team statistics or won-loss records quite yet. Both are helpful but it’s too early.

Well Stan, lots of the baseball fans here have already decided how the season is going to turn out.

If the point was obvious, there would be approximately one billion less posts on this site.

Besides, I like to muse all about baseball.

As much as I want the Yankees to stink, an 8-game sample size is insignificant. It’s a bit like saying the RS stunk after 3 games, and we are now world-beaters after 5 games. The age-old saying still stands.

You are never as good as you look when you are winning, and you are never as bad as you look when you are losing.

Indeed. Sometimes you win and sometimes the other team loses. The other day when Verdugo got hit on 0 and 2, a wild pitch put runners on second and third and then the right fielder misplayed JD’s walk off double? That was gift wrapped.

You could also say the Red Sox should’ve won 2 of their first 3 if they had hit at all. The game isn’t that complicated. Score more than your opponent. Only Yankee fans are taking these posts as their obit.

Red Sox are terrible. That was obvious before the season even started. They didn’t need to get swept by Os to figure that out. Atleast Yankees have a bullpen (dominate). Red Sox have 3 or 4 good players rest of team is unproven or replacement players or injured.

They are better off tanking. They’ll be years away from competing w Toronto in about 18 months if they don’t.

A devers/sale package to Toronto later this year would do wonders to evening out that balance

Demoted after two starts. I don’t know why any player would wanna play in NY man. Sure money is great but the organizations and fans treat the players like trash. Watched Edwin Diaz get booed by the fans yesterday just for giving up a walk. I wouldn’t wanna play for the worst fans in the world for 162 days out of the year. That’s just me.
