Blue Jays Sign Dilson Herrera

By Anthony Franco | May 10, 2021 at 10:02am CDT

The Blue Jays recently signed Dilson Herrera to a minor-league contract (h/t to Chris Hilburn-Trenkle of Baseball America). The utility infielder was assigned to Triple-A Buffalo, where he’s begun the year 2-12 with a double and a triple.

Herrera, once a top prospect in the Mets’ system, broke into the big leagues as a 20-year-old in 2014. He never really got an extended run, either in New York or Cincinnati after his inclusion in the 2016 Jay Bruce deal. Herrera made an extremely brief return to the big leagues last season, appearing in three games with the Orioles. All told, he owns a .199/.290/.386 line in 272 MLB plate appearances.

Obviously, Herrera never lived up to his top prospect billing. He’s still only 27 years old though, and he’s generally been productive at Triple-A (.279/.343/.471) in parts of six seasons. He’ll add some high minors infield depth, alongside fellow former top prospect Christian Colón, to a Jays’ organization that is currently without utilityman Joe Panik due to a calf strain.

Dilson is quite versatile on the infield, even able to play 1B despite been somehow short.
Does not have a ton of power, but can bat line drives and runs very well. Hopefully can get at least a cup of coffee in Toronto… Or should I say Buffalo?

I still remember the angst when the Bucs dealt him away. I’m surprised that he never turned into a star like our other top prospects, lol.

I saw him play with the Mets. Just looked like he needed some playing time to find his groove. Shocked he is only 27. That trade looked like a steal for mets when made because vic black threw fire.

Dilson Herrera and (especially) Vic Black are definitley 2 names I did not think I’d hear about again in 2021.

He only signed with the Blue Jays because he won’t have to go to Canada, where their government won’t let anybody outside to play golf or tennis. And all the Canadians say being locked in their basements is good for them. LOL!!!! Canada – the land that warm weather and freedom forgot. LOL!!!

The Blue Jays may be able to sign free agents now, as long as their government won’t let anybody place baseball there. LOL!!!
