Braves Place Huascar Ynoa On 10-Day Injured List

By Mark Polishuk | May 17, 2021 at 3:10pm CDT

Braves righty Huascar Ynoa is headed to the injured list after suffering a broken right hand, manager Brian Snitker told MLB.com’s Mark Bowman and other reporters.  The Braves made the official announcement shortly after Snitker’s meeting with the press, as Ynoa was placed on the 10-day IL and righty Edgar Santana was called up from Triple-A.

Ynoa broke his hand after punching the dugout in frustration following a tough outing yesterday against the Brewers, and will now spend approximately two months or more in recovery.  It’s a very unfortunate setback for a player who has become an unexpectedly big part of Atlanta’ rotation this season.

Even after yesterday’s struggles against Milwaukee (five earned runs allowed on nine hits and two walks over 4 1/3 innings), Ynoa still had a 3.02 ERA/3.28 SIERA over 44 2/3 total frames of work for the Braves.  Though Ynoa has been allowing a lot of hard contact, he has delivered an above-average 27.9% strikeout rate and 6.1% walk rate.

Considering Ynoa had only a 7.30 ERA in 24 2/3 innings for the Braves in 2019-20, his emergence was a major plus for an Atlanta pitching staff that has struggled to stay healthy and pitch effectively.  Since Mike Soroka’s timetable to return from the IL is still uncertain, the path was clear for Ynoa to remain in the rotation prior to his own injury.  With Ynoa out, the Braves could turn to some combination of rookie southpaw Tucker Davidson (who was called up earlier today), Bryse Wilson, or Kyle Wright to fill the open spot in the rotation.

I doubt he has a future in Atlanta now. This is absolutely inexcusable. This team is already without Soroka and Ynoa just put the entire season in jeopardy because of one bad start.

You have to put the team first and he clearly didn’t. He wouldn’t even be in the rotation if Soroka wasn’t hurt.

Actually if Soroka and Ynoa were both healthy the obvious candidate to loose his spot is sucky Smyly. I’m still pissed the Braves even signed him, and especially for as much as they did.

I think it’s a little of both. When you’re young, you don’t fully understand the impact or consequences of your words or actions. That is to say, there are selfish things that are done, but from those selfish and self-inflicted errors, wisdom and maturity come.

The entire season? That’s an extreme exaggeration.
Ynoa has never pitched more than 116 innings so he was most likely not gonna pitch the whole season and into the playoffs.
While unfortunate and definitely not optimal, we can now have Ynoa hopefully return rested and capable of providing help at the end of the season, either as a starter or reliever.

He had pitched great aside from only two bad starts (in Chicago and in Milwaukee). This starting rotation is already not deep enough. The bullpen is already being overused. Now the guy who has been our best starter this season is out for at least two months. There is no sugarcoating this. It is absolutely inexcusable garbage and he should not be paid for the games he’s going to miss because of his own stupidity.

Best case now is it gives Wright, Wilson, or Davidson a golden opportunity to establish themselves in the rotation. Wright and Wilson have been yo-yo’d from the majors to Gwinnett the last few years, so at this point it’s time to see if either can become a fixture in the rotation.

He absolutely has a future in Atlanta. This is terrible and I can’t believe he did it but the Braves are not giving up on a power pitcher who throws 99 mph and has been dominant on the mound and at the plate this season. He made a stupid mistake out of anger but he is 22 years old. I think he just learned his lesson. He will pitch again for the Braves this season and will be with the team for a long time. This is the worst part of Ynoa’s story with the Braves. The best part is that the Braves acquired him from the Twins as a 17 year old and all they had to give up was 2 months of Jaime Garcia. The Twins picked up all of Garcia’s remaining multi-million dollar salary on top of that. Even with this injury I bet the Twins wish they had a do-over. Especially considering they never won with Garcia and he has been out of the league for sometime now. Ynoa was a 17-year old that was never really supposed to make it. His story is amazing. We weren’t talking about a 17 year old Acuna or Albies. Most people probably thought he would never make a major league roster. Then he grew and his velocity grew with him. He is also never going to have problems with walks. All he does is attack the strike zone. That’s a good thing for a guy that throws 99 consistently and can pitch 7 innings at a time.

People make mistakes. He’s obviously an emotional guy (kid?) and took it out on himself. It sucks and I’m sure he’s even more upset now, but he flashed some real stuff enough times out there to not make it a career ender or whatever overreaction we feel like typing about in response. I bet there’s nothing you could say that would make him feel any lower about punching a wall and breaking his hand because of what essentially boiled down to a bad luck outing. If the Braves are smart they’ll help coach him through it.

I’ve seen enough of Wright and Wilson. It needs to be either Davidson or Muller. There’s no guarantee that either of those two will be successful but the Braves need to try something different at this point. Wright and Wilson have had their chances and have done basically nothing aside from Wilson’s one fluke start in the NLCS.

It’s easy to forget that Wilson is still only 23 years old. Davidson and Wright are both 25.

Ynoa never really got back-to-back starts before this year. Wilson has had times where he’s had a start three straight turns through the rotation and hasn’t made adjustments. That’s the difference.

The dude has changed his pitching repertoire and it’s helped him this season, if that isn’t an adjustment then there isn’t any as a pitcher. He’s changed his pitch mix and has all but dropped the flat 4 seam. Wilson has upside still again like I said about the catcher post yesterday Braves fans need to stop over reacting to young players not starting off as the best pitcher or hitter in the league. Ynoa, Wilson, Alex Jackson, Pache, Austin Riley, and plenty more seem to get written off after the teeny tiniest taste of the bigs. This team is young they aren’t all going to bud into instant MLB players this just isn’t how prospects work. Can you imagine if glavine, Maddox or smoltz had no chance to grow.like it seems every fanatical Braves fan thinks “they must preform at once or they suck because our playoff window is now” be rational not a moron it’s may we are 4-5 weeks in on a 6-7 month season.

One of the other kids (Ynoa is still a kid) will be pushed into rotation. I think Wilson has inside track but if Tucker shines, he might get a long look. Wright has not pitched particularly well so far at Gwinnett, so he might be last on that list but still in mix.

Atlanta already did not have enough depth in the starting rotation. Now the most reliable starter to this point in 2021 is out for at least two months because he couldn’t control his temper after a rough start. That is definitely putting the entire season in jeopardy.

If Hamels really wanted another shot with Atlanta then he would need to pitch for $1 million or less. Otherwise it’s not worth the risk for the Braves.

Rockies should offer Jon Gray for a good AA Braves pitching prospect. If not now, at least when they get Freeland back in a couple weeks.

We definitely need some help here in Atlanta but I honestly have no idea what the plan is.

Forget the rotation, how are the Braves going to replace Ynoa’s bat (.353 BA and 1.118 OPS)?

Were pecota projections correct? 4th place in the east winning 82 games? I hope they can turn it around, but the pen is in need

It’s not the pitching that’s letting the team down.
      We need to hit.
      Where’s Chipper?
5 straight losses at home is inexcusable.

However, the bullpen does not have as much depth as last year. Unfortunately we are not as solid in the bullpen as a result of not having O’Day & Melancon, and not starting the year with Greene, and then having Martin injured. These are irrefutable facts. Furthermore, no matter which way you look at it we are missing another bat out of the lineup. Duvall’s OBP is poor, however he has 8hr and 29 rbi’s so far this season, with Duvall going to the Marlins and Markakis retiring, we are definitely missing a power bat.
