Pitching Notes: Blue Jays, Allgeyer, Nats, Strasburg, Astros, Valdez, Odorizzi

By TC Zencka | May 17, 2021 at 9:50am CDT

The Blue Jays have optioned Nick Allgeyer to Triple-A, per Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet.ca (via Twitter). Allgeyer did not make an appearance and has yet to make his Major League debut. The Jays won’t make a corresponding move until tomorrow. There’s no need to fill his roster spot today given their day off. Since service time is measured in days and not games, there’s no reason to make a move any earlier than necessary. In other pitcher news…

  • The Nationals may be close to activating Stephen Strasburg, depending on how his shoulder feels today, per Mark Zuckerman of MASNsports.com (via Twitter). Nationals’ starters rank an uncharacteristic 25th in the Majors by fWAR, 16th with a 4.29 ERA and next-to-last with a 4.83 FIP. Strasburg has contributed just two starts totaling 10 innings on the year.
  • Framber Valdez and Jake Odorizzi will start on back-to-back days for the Sugar Land Skeeters this week, per Sports Director at Fox 26 Mark Berman (via Twitter). That’s especially good news considering that Jose Urquidy just landed on the injured list. Because of their schedule, however, Houston could largely get by with only four starters until June, writes the Athletic’s Jake Kaplan. If everyone can get healthy, the Astros will have a surplus of starters, which could lead to Cristian Javier or Luis Garcia being bumped to the bullpen or back to Triple-A, despite their solid efforts thus far.

First Riley Adams, now Nick Allgeyer. Imagine being called up to the majors, finally getting a chance to taste the big leagues… only to be sent down before even making your debut.
    Ouch.

It makes you wonder doesn’t it? Obviously they were called up for just in case scenarios, but such is the collective bargaining agreement.

Figured Allgeyer was the chaser for Stripling’s next start. Clearly not the case here.

Riley better pick it up because Moreno is wearing out AA pitching.

Both are amazing prospects. Riley has the big body big power that MLB likes and Moreno is just plain good at AA.

Riley Adams is not an amazing prospect. He’s lucky to be considered a prospect. He’s not even Ryan Lavarnway.

At least now the next time he gets called up, he’ll know his way around a little bit.

They’ll still likely get their chance at least, unlike Brian Jeroloman who spent 37 days on the Jays roster at the end of 2011 without getting into a game, or ever seeing the majors again.

His fastball has added a few ticks during the COVID season, helps his changeup play up, breaking balls are sharper this year, he’s had pretty good control through the minors (his 5 walks in 12 innings this year notwithstanding), and is 30th on the Blue Jays Top 30 prospects list. Cieling is probably 4th/5th starter, floor is an AAAA depth guy. Realistically he’ll probably end up somewhere in between (long man/up-and down guy).

They were talking about who will get bumped from the rotation during the game in Oakland. Obviously Garcia will be the first one demoted, but I agree that Javier should remain in the rotation. Javier deserves to be a starter just as much as Valdez and Urquidi do.
