The Red Sox have placed Enrique Hernandez on the 10-day injured list because of a right hamstring strain. Michael Chavis has been recalled in his place, per Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe (via Twitter). Chavis had been on Boston’s taxi squad.
Kiké has been the Red Sox primary centerfielder thus far this season, though he has also seen time up the middle in the infield. Offensively, he clocks in with a .239/.298/.425 triple slash line with four home runs in 124 plate appearances. While Hernandez has been a touch light at the plate (or exactly average with a 100 wRC+), his overall contributions amount to 0.6 bWAR/0.5 fWAR. That puts the former Dodger on a 2.5 fWAR pace over 150 games.
Chavis pinch-ran and scored a run in his only appearance of the season to date. The 25-year-old has hit .241/.304/.424 in 634 career plate appearances between 2019 and 2020.

Happy for Chavis.

Chavis!

Maybe the Sox will demote Dalbec when Kike returns from IL

Love Chavis, but was hoping for Duran.
JoeBrady
Duran is 0-11 with 6 Ks.
Gwynning's Anal Lover
He meant Duran Duran.
bobtillman
Duran would have been nice, if only for the glove; they’ve got enough bats. The Sox were easily the worst defensive team in the division (which is saying something, since they all stink); now they’re just abysmal. Beyond Renfroe and X, who are “meh’ at best, they’re truly awful.
JoeBrady
You forgot Verdugo, but yeah.
GCarbs
Verdugo, Vazquez, and Arroyo are all good to decent fielders
Dumpster Divin Theo
Jah, if only they could clone the slick fielding Duran for defense that would be useful. A Duran-Duran combo patrolling terra firma like a wolf.
SoxRewl
Dalbec can pick it at 1st. Vazquez is a plus defensive catcher.
looiebelongsinthehall
Bob, sorry for replying a little late and I hope you’d see this. Sox defense is better than the Yankees. When healthy and when Franchy is sitting, I ac5ually like the outfield. No one is replacing JBJ but overall the OF is solid. Bobby is learning first and while he’s not Moreland, he’s been better than I expected in the field. Also XB gets no respect but he’s fine to me considering his bat. The problems I see is between the fact that the pitchers hold no one on and KP being lousy at throwing them out, other teams have a field day. I haven’t mentioned Devers because what is there to say? KP has been surprisingly good with the bat but the primary focus for a back up catcher has to be the glove, the full package. No one consistently ran when Leon was there with Vasquez and that’s the only move I’d make. I’ll live with third glove issues given Devers’ glove. That leaves 2B. I didn’t mention the OF is good when Kiki is out there. Thus, he can’t also play second. That’s the one starting position I want fixed.
bobtillman
I’ll grant that Bobby D. isn’t terrible at 1B; considering who he’s got throwing to him, he’s all that more a plus. And I should have included Vasquez in the meh category.
Ya, they’re probably better than the Yanks….it’s hard to delineate. Except for the Rays (and that’s only sometimes), it’s a pretty pathetic defensive division.
Bosox2013
Duran is fast and athletic but he isn’t a defensive upgrade. He is a fairly average outfielder. Duran was 2nd baseman in college and was pretty good but the Red Sox in all there wisdom turned him into an outfielder because they felt his speed was wasted in the outfield. That kind of wisdom is why there farm system sucks (aside from Casas).
Bosox2013
Speed was wasted in infield***
Salvi
Their farm sucks because Dombrowski traded away anyone with a spec of talent, and didn’t spend ten seconds on the drafts. Because he knew he would be around long enough to see any of the players mature.
But sure, lets go with your theory that a couple of players changed positions, so thats why the entire system is depleted. Mookie to the OF was such a bad idea.
Never move anyone and we have this: 2024: Now playing second base Verdugo, Duran and Yorke, playing Centerfield NOONE.
Mlb1971
Mookie Betts 5 gold gloves
Mookie Betts 2016 defensive player of the year
No one every mentions Ben Cherington violated rules on international draft and 2016-2017 offseason draft of 20 some players were declared free agents (RS lost the entire draft class)! Look how many RS players are international signees: Bogaerts, Devers,…..
Salvi
RS8: Did you read my post? “Mookie” comment was sarcasm. If you couldn’t tell , its because you didn’t read any other sentences I wrote..
Also “offseason draft”? You mean international draft? I believe it was only 6 players, not “20 some”.
Mlb1971
Dennyd- I am agreeing with you and including stats for emphasis for any of the posters who want to argue against your (our) point!
Duran CF is a work in progress. He did not look that good in the televised alternative site “games”.
KD17
dennyd – Idiotic comment. You know nothing about baseball if you believe what you wrote. ALL the talent you see on the major league team survived the DD administration and graduated to the pros. All the over-rated players he traded have yet to make a big impact ANYWHERE. Moncada was the number 1 prospect and its 5 years later and he’s an average 3B. Sale is an elite SP. Great trade by DD.
The team sucks on defense because of Bloom. Downgraded the team at LF, CF and RF. Still have the butcher at 3B, Bogey still at SS, small upgrade from Nunez to Hernandez at 2B and downgrade at 1B from Moreland to Dalbec. Dalbec will improve but Devers will always suck. Benny should never have been traded. Renfroe for JBJ is simply a change in the pros and cons of the players and Verdugo is a huge step down from Betts. They suck for a very good reason. Their manager sucks and their GM sucks and most of all their owners suck.
Bosox2013
Mookie is an entirely different kind of athlete and his bat is the reason they moved him to the outfield as it got him to the bigs faster. Also they had 2nd locked down with Pedroia. Bringing up Mookie has nothing to do with Duran or there garbage farm system
Angry Disgruntled Sox Fan
This might be good. Kike is a .240 hitter, Chavis hasn’t reached his ceiling yet.
bosoxforlife
Didn’t you notice that .240 is well above league average. The reason the Red Sox have surprised everybody, but me, is that Bloom, who knows baseball by the way, brought in players whose value far exceeds their nominal stats. Gonzalez, Arroyo, Hernandez are the right kind of players who add something in lots of ways.
Salvi
“Well above average” League average includes pitchers. And it’s not even “well above” that number. He may be a starter in NL, where small ball is played, but at Fenway, he should only be a placeholder.
I don’t have a issue with him playing at the moment, but without a great glove, there’s nothing wrong with wanting a younger player to become starter, and having Kiki as a super-utility.
KD17
bosoxforlife – you should share your drugs because they are powerful to believe the horse manure you just spilled on everyone. Knowledgeable GM, BS. Not one impactful move in nearly 2 years. Pivetta looks to be his brainchild move.
As far as Kiki goes, he’s a good bench player on a good team. He starts for the Red Sox which says volumes about how good they are. Reality will come a knocking very soon. They haven’t played the Yankees.
Bosox2013
Lol the fact that Kike has gotten so many starts in Center should tell you there’s something wrong. His value is off the bench or in a utility role not starting every day mostly in center.
rmullig2
I remember back when the Red Sox used to brag about how great the outfield defense was. No offense to Kike but when he is the best outfield defender you have then you have a terrible defensive outfield.
Bruin1012
The Red Sox when they play Verdugo, Kike, and Renfroe is a pretty good defensive outfield certainly better then average. It drops off significantly when Cordero is out there.
Bruin1012
The real issue with that outfield is offensively only one of those guys gives the offense you want out of those positions with two of them complete black holes offensively and one below average for an outfielder.
KD17
Bruin1012 – Don’t mix words. They stink as a unit compared to the old group. Benny should have never been traded. JBJ should have been replaced years ago and Mookie should have had a statue erected outside Fenway in about 15 years. Instead, we have Mo, Larry and Curly in the outfield.
Part of the reason you don’t think they are that bad is that the pitching is doing better than expected. Once that breaks down and more tweeners are hit you’ll see just how bad they are.
bobtillman
Best record in MLB, no? Ya, it won’t last, might as well enjoy it. And who knows, I’ve said all along the AL East gets won or lost on August 2 (or whenever the deadline is this year).
One thing that’s perfectly apparent is the ALE is nowhere near to where it used to be. Warts everywhere; huge talent gaps, you can roll the ball through all the infields, one Cy Young guy, a division full of fourth starters.
jmi1950
Bob, right now the ALE has the best record of any div. — 10 gms over .500.
.
ALW — 6 gms over
NLC — 4 gms over.
NLE — 3 gms under
NLW — 4 gms under
ALC — 13 gms under
