Angels’ Jose Quintana Moved To Bullpen

By Mark Polishuk | June 22, 2021 at 5:50pm CDT

JUNE 22: Quintana will indeed work out of the bullpen, manager Joe Maddon tells reporters (including J.P. Hoornstra of the Southern California News Group).

JUNE 21: Left-hander Jose Quintana is back on the Angels’ active roster after being reinstated off the 10-day injured list.  Another roster moves seems to be coming for the team, as the Halos also announced that right-handers Jaime Barria and Chris Rodriguez were optioned to the minors (Barria to Triple-A and Rodriguez to Double-A) after yesterday’s game.

Quintana hit the IL on May 31 due to shoulder inflammation, continuing a tough beginning to his tenure in Anaheim.  Quintana had a 7.22 ERA over his first 33 2/3 innings of the season, though his SIERA is only 4.48 — a very low 58.6% strand rate and a whopping .400 BABIP have contributed to Quintana’s lack of bottom-line success.  On the plus side, the southpaw has a career-best 30.1% strikeout rate.

The Angels signed Quintana to a one-year, $8MM contract in free agency last winter with the expectation that the veteran would at least bring some durability and innings-eating ability to the pitching staff, yet Quintana’s return to the 26-man roster might not necessarily auger a return to the rotation.  The Halos are already working with a six-man staff, and Patrick Sandoval has pitched well as Quintana’s fill-in.  While youngster Griffin Canning has been inconsistent and Dylan Bundy has been rocked over his recent starts, it doesn’t seem like either would be displaced for Quintana, so the veteran lefty might find himself in the bullpen.

A long-relief or swingman role would allow the Angels to keep Quintana relatively stretched out for a return to the rotation if necessary, and a stint in the pen could help Quintana get on track.  Los Angeles can use all the bullpen help it can get, as the Halos relief corps ranks in the bottom third of the league in most pitching categories.

Fans seem to think Rodriguez was our saving grace but he’s actually been quite bad since his return from the IL. I just hope this doesn’t bump Patrick Sandoval from the rotation

He was our saving grace and he’s been very bad since his return. When the Angels lose a game, chances are it is because the bullpen blew it.

Not attempting to address the bullpen was a horrible decision by the Angels.

He’s looked really bad since coming back from the IL. Plus the long term goal is to stretch him out to starting.

AA makes a lot of sense. Don’t want him to pick up bad habits in the super thin air in Salt Lake.

Also poor usage of Barria. The kid seems like a legit back end starter. How is it he can’t pitch better than some of their other starters. Besides Heaney and now Ohtani pretty inconsistent staff.

Maybe they’re going to stretch him out as a starter? They’ve effectively limited his innings by having him in the bullpen. For almost half the year. Starter for the stretch run?

I’ve not check but how many teams are using a six man rotation.. and the ones that are, how is it going for them?… maybe pitching with the extra rest is part of the problem.. pitchers are still mot accustomed to the additional rest..

Dude stfu, can your pea size brain not wrap it’s head around the fact that the owner added the Los Angeles moniker for Marketing purposes. There’s a reason why your broke and Arte Moreno is a multi millionaire that made his money off of marketing and advertising. It’s literally not that hard to comprehend, but then again you are a dodger Stan soo that explains alot.

It is hard to go back. The LA Angels were around for decades before the Dodgers, used the now-Dodgers logo first, and had a great tradition in LA.

But once you change locations and names it makes it awkward to go back. I understand the reason for going back to the original franchise name but fell in love with the California Angels version and still prefer it.

Names like the Braves, Indians, and Chiefs are not derogatory either.

And I always wonder why the Celtics are never singled out. But as someone of Irish heritage, I like that they use the name, even if no one knows how to pronounce it.

And what of the Yankees. Since the name is derogatory of the Dutch, why don’t they have to change their name?

They’ve been the LA Angels since the 1800s. They were here 1st and played in South Central LA forever. The Dodgers stole the LA logo and have been trying to keep the Angels away ever since. Look it up on Wiki….

Glad to see Jose back and hopefully the rest and time off helps. He was looking better before this last IL stint. I am curious why CRod is back to AA? Maybe stretching him out to play more innings or see if he can start again? And I wonder why Barria isn’t given a chance to actually start? He has been on a bus back and forth to SLC so far. He and Suarez seem like they can do better than others to start or in the pen. Maybe a trade is in the works for an arm? Couldn’t hurt…now if #27 can come back soon. That would be great!

Barria, Canning, Sandoval and Ohtani are the only SPs with options left. Sending Ohtani down is obviously a no-go. Sandoval is pitching very well. So it comes down to Canning or Barria, and they have more faith in Canning.

Angels are 12-6 without Quintana and his 7.22 era/1.93 whip/ 3 losses. He’s gotten out of the 4th inning once in his 6 starts with the Angels. The team is Soo much better without him pitching. There’s zero reason to have this guy on the roster, Both Sandoval and Jose Suarez are pitching Soo Soo much better this year.

I was surprised also to see Rodriguez sent to AA. I’m sure they have a plan. We are wallowing in mediocrity and if we don’t grab a bunch of pitching right now and begin a serious pursuit of the post season, it will be another season wasted. It’s clear that our offense can keep us in games with teams like Detroit, Arizona, et al, who are bottom dwellers. But as soon as we play true contenders, our pitching issues are quickly revealed. Our schedule to end the 1st half is SF, Rays, NYY, Os, Red Sox, and Seattle. Other than the Orioles, those are all teams that will expose how weak our pitching staff is. We need pitching now if this season is going to mean something.

As a side note, the Bundy experiment is over. He should not be in the rotation.

Angels have pitching issues, which has been the story of Mike Trouts entire career as a halo? When is it you decide as a front office you need a for sure anchor? A 20-30 million guy to solidify your Rotation? Yankees got one? Houston has one? Dodgers have one? Nationals have one? I expect them to be in on Max Scherzer, but do they have what it takes to land him or another front line starter?

Arte Moreno likes bats. All six banners as you walk into the ballpark are bats. (Ohtani is up there as a hitter)

I was big on the Zack Wheeler wagon last off season. Swap out Q for Wheeler and the Angels are a Wild Card team, especially if they spent the savings on not signing Rendon on decent bullpen pieces.

But alas, Arte talked to Boras about Cole but told him he really wanted Rendon so bats are it.

I’m not sure Wheeler makes the Angels a guaranteed wild card team. Right now, the two AL wild card teams are 13 games over .500 and 15 games over .500. While Wheeler would be great for LA, I don’t think he alone puts them over the top. They needed to sign him along with 2-3 legitimate bullpen arms to have a chance to keep up with the big boys.

Hippyripper totally agree but Max Scherzer is too old to dump money on when our whole rotation is so far away less Ohtani.

They should have gone in on Wheeler but when I heard Roger Lodge shoot that down I knew it came from on high and was not going to happen at the time he went to the Phils

Sandoval is looking good. He has progressed nicely from prior years when he was brought up prematurely out of necessity.

I would give Suarez and Barria opportunities before I would go back to Quintana. Suarez has been solid this year and, when given consistent starts, Barria has been a good back end guy. Having said that, it appears the Angels have little faith in Barria.

They might as well put Quintana back in the rotation to find out if he can turn it around. If he can, one of two things happens—either the Angels make a run at contending (with his help), or they don’t and they can try to trade him for…something. Same with Bundy. And they will probably try to stretch CRod out in a safer environment than the pinball machine fields of the firmer PCL.

I have been saying for his last 3-4 starts that he looked excellent for the first two innings and then he fell apart. I think the angels should definitely use him out of the bullpen to increase his value and then trade him at the deadline for someone who can actually pitch deeper into games. I just don’t think he’s a capable starter anymore.
