The Braves announced this morning they’ve recalled reliever Shane Greene to make his first MLB appearance of 2021. Right-hander Jacob Webb was optioned to Triple-A Gwinnett last night in a corresponding active roster move.
Greene pitched for Atlanta in the second half of 2019 and all of 2020. The 32-year-old worked to a solid 3.27 ERA/3.87 FIP in 52 1/3 innings over that time, albeit with just a 20.0% strikeout rate. After qualifying for free agency at the end of last season, Greene spent the entire offseason unsigned, with surprisingly little in the way of reported interest.
Despite the quiet free agency period, the righty maintained he planned to return to the field at some point. The Braves and Greene eventually found a mutual price, as he re-signed with Atlanta on a one-year, $1.5MM deal (prorated to between $1.1MM and $1.2MM) in early May. As part of the agreement, Greene consented to being optioned to Gwinnett to build himself into game shape.
He ultimately made four appearances with the Stripers, tossing 4 1/3 frames of one-run ball. Greene will now look to help an Atlanta bullpen that ranks just 27th in ERA (4.80) and 21st in SIERA (3.98) this season.
The Braves BP can use all the help it can get. they should have re-signed Melancon as well.

Melancon was signed by the Padres in the off-season.
Yes he was.
The Braves offered more than the Padres did, but he wanted to be in SD.
Looking like the right call at this point
Atlanta’s Achilles’ heel has been the bullpen. Melancon would have improved it. Saying that going to SD was the right call ignores the difference going to Atlanta would have made to both Atlanta and SD. I think either could have been the “right call”.

Yeah, I couldn’t find any articles about him turning down a Braves deal either.
The mistake wasn’t letting Melancon walk, it was not signing a RHRP to replace him. The pen was very lefty heavy.
Relief pitching is volatile though. They could have ran back the exact same pen and gotten different results from last season.
He sucks
I back the Braves but their RP is horrendous. I don’t see this as their golden goose. They disassembled one of the better relief corps in baseball. Lets address the turd in the punch bowl, Ozuna. Guilty or innocent this is a major blow to a great team, with a great history.
It’s not looking good for Ozuna. As it stands he may have played in his last MLB game. I wish that not to be the case, but something dramatic will have to happen to send his situation in another direction.
