Brewers Acquire Hunter Strickland From Angels For Cash Considerations

By TC Zencka | June 12, 2021 at 12:48pm CDT

The Brewers have acquired right-hander Hunter Strickland from the Angels today in exchange for cash considerations. Both teams have announced the deal. The Angels had designated Strickland for assignment earlier this week.

Strickland has at various point in recent seasons provided quality bullpen work in uniform for the Mets, Nationals, Rays, Angels, and Mariners going back to 2019, when he won a World Series ring with the Nats. Prior to that, he was a steady hand out of the Giants’ pen from 2014 to 2018. The Brewers will be his third team of 2021. He has a 4.03 ERA/5.03 FIP in 22 1/3 innings with the Rays and Angels, though he particularly struggled in his short time with the Angels, giving up seven earned runs in just 6 1/3 innings of work.

To make rooom on the 40-man roster, the Brewers transferred Travis Shaw to the 60-day injured list. Shaw provided the media with an update today. He will attempt to rehab his shoulder dislocation, but if there’s not enough improvement at a certain point, he will be shut down for the year, per Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel (via Twitter).

Short leash for a club with a bad bullpen.

Was a bad bullpen. The jury is still out. But the Angels have cleaned up a lot in their pen and their defense, which was one of the major causes of their pitching problems. And now they have only one current reliever with an ERA over 5, with most of their other relievers dropping into the 3.00’s. The result is 12-5 over the past 3 weeks , without their offense having to get red hot to do either. So Strickland’s leash had to be short and unfortunately he just wasn’t one of those arms who could hop aboard an improving staff. Like I said, though, whether or not their improvements are sustainable, we’ll have to see.

All welcomed words of encouragement. Really only swapped out Sledgers for Hoyt. There has been a lot of negative comments on what Pery has done to the bullpen. I liked it myself, although luck brought us Chicek and Watson. Pretty sure Cam, Kenyan and Noe wouldn’t have done better.

For sure Ron, the BP was never the sole or main problem with there sluggish start. Like you said, which some seam to believe. All 4 phases of the game was the issue. They kind of just traded off with, SP’s, RP’s, hitting, and defense costing them wins early on. There finally starting to put everything together, let’s just hope they keep it together. Light it up!

Probably considering the Mets acquired Cameron Maybin from the Cubs for a dollar. Then again, considering how he hit [or didn’t hit] for the Mets, they probably should’ve gotten change back. Then again, he does provide depth in Syracuse.

What an insult to the guys working hard in AAA. Bring in a guy that a much worse team doesn’t want.

Yeah they’d probably feel all sorts of good if they’d been traded to a lousy organization for a potential game changer.
      Or not.
Perhaps if they continue working hard they’ll still get their shot, assuming this guy doesn’t perform.

As long as home run Strickland doesn’t pitch in Miller park, brewers should be ok

Really rather give Barker a chance. I’m sorry rather give these guys that have been with the organization for years a chance. I get that some guys don’t have the stats to warrant a try but at the same time in the minors your not always worrying about there success as much as working on mechanical issues

Exactly. Him or Sanchez. Both guys have put up good numbers for several years and their stuff could translate or not. Give them a try and see. Both are past prospect age status so why not. Strickland could have something but also has t really been good for several years now.

Or QTC, who has quietly been effective for his entire time in the minors, yet has never oved up any prospect lists.

He meant the Brewers, who are 2 games better than the Cubs over the last 20 (and more than that over the fading Cards).
Cubs might be 2nd hottest over that span (since Adames).

Not to dump on the guy, but Hunter Strickland did not particularly provide “good work” for the Nats in 2019. His ERA was over 5, his FIP was over 6. If I remember correctly, he was left off the playoff rosters. In general his performance was considered a disappointment after his acquisition.

He’s not as good as those Tampa stats, but not as bad as he showed in Anaheim. Good luck to him.

Hunter Strickland is a hot-headed man child. A total nut case and the only player on ‘my’ team I ever heckled. Too harsh?
