The Pirates have signed right-hander Tanner Anderson to a minor league deal, according to an announcement from their Triple-A affiliate in Indianapolis. The 28-year-old was recently released by the Athletics.
Anderson will be returning to his original organization, as his professional career began when Pittsburgh selected him out of Harvard in the 20th round of the 2015 draft. He performed well and moved quickly through the minor leagues, reaching the majors in July 2018. Anderson made six relief appearances for the Bucs that season, allowing ten runs over 11 1/3 innings. Pittsburgh traded Anderson to Oakland over the 2018-19 offseason. He made five starts for the A’s in 2019, tossing 22 1/3 frames of 6.04 ERA/4.68 SIERA ball. The A’s passed Anderson through outright waivers after that season.
He’d spent 2021 with the A’s Triple-A affiliate in Las Vegas, where he moved back to relief. Anderson tossed fifteen innings over twelve appearances, allowing only six runs but walking twelve while striking out just three hitters. He’s yet to find much success at the big league level, but Anderson has a history of throwing strikes and racking up tons of grounders in the minors.

The Pirates pitching staffs in the minors must really be hurting
YourDreamGM
Nope they are fine.
WarkMohlers
Fair enough. Saw below you predicted trades, so they must anticipate needing starters in the minors.
An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure then, get the arm in the system to replace as needed before staffs start hurting from callups and trades.
YourDreamGM
They are super weak at AAA and well off at other levels. MLB they have a weak bench, any injury is filled by waiver claims or trades or failed prospects from AAA. Pitching they haven’t had this problem but they will trade as many pitchers as they can at the deadline. This guy is emergency depth.

I bet it pains Nutting to part with the pro-rated 60 grand for a MiL deal

Typical Pirate Fan™ makes this same tired comment in every Pirates thread…
Ghost of past pirates
Thats because he is a no life idiotic troll
DarkSide830
it’s because it’s true
SpendNuttinWinNuttin
Because as pirates fans that’s the story every single year. Nutting doesn’t wanna spend….
mazbilleroski
Because it’s the truth
YourDreamGM
Doesn’t excite me. They are going to try and trade some pitchers so somebody has to pitch.
DarkSide830
kinda shocked they havent reached out to someone like Anibal or maybe Henderson Alvarez again to try and get extra innings covered.
YourDreamGM
They haven’t had any issues with pitching depth besides the entire staff being back end starters. Bullpen fine as well and fairly good. This isn’t a desperation move. Guy used to be in the system and provides insurance in case they get some good offers on their relievers.

They have but they all hung up before they answered.
Asfan0780
This guy had solid velocity, tons of groundballs and one time looked like a potential back rotation option in upper minors
mazbilleroski
I heard the Pirates have made some calls to Bartolo Colon.

How many Tanners are in or near (i.e., AAA) the majors now? The best deal for nerds like me a few years ago was between the Nats and the Reds – Tanner R for Tanner R.
Jim Thome is my homie
He would’ve made more money had he just gone into the “real world” with his Harvard degree.

Lol. Tanner Anderson.
Roster filler on the 1985 Redux Team called the Pirates.
Load up, Cherington, on ALL these names.
Can’t have enough of these when wheeling and dealing time comes.
Anderson will be a toss in/add on on some deal. Or simply fill out the roster once all the others are traded.
Bucs need to trade all of them (except maybe Reynolds) for 20 pitchers and 4 Catchers.
All age 20. Rip it all the way down to the floorboards and begin with pitching and catching only.
Some team that “thinks they’re in it” will want a scrub like Anderson.
For it. They will give a A ball 20 year old. Can’t do any worse than Tanner has done since he was 20.
Worth it for another young arm.
