Tigers Make Four Roster Moves

By Mark Polishuk | July 7, 2021 at 10:44am CDT

The Tigers made a quartet of roster moves today, including the reinstatement of utilityman Niko Goodrum from the 10-day injured list.  Goodrum will replace Daz Cameron, who is headed to the 10-day IL (retroactive to July 5) due to a right toe sprain.  Left-hander Ian Krol will join the roster after his contract was selected from Triple-A, and righty Spencer Turnbull was moved to the 60-day IL to accommodate Krol on the 40-man roster.

Turnbull’s situation appears somewhat ominous, as Tigers manager A.J. Hinch told The Detroit News’ Chris McCosky and other reporters that the right-hander had a setback in his recovery from a forearm strain.  That injury was initially thought to be a relatively minor muscular issue rather than a structural problem within Turnbull’s forearm, but he will now undergo further examination.  The 60-day IL timeframe begins from the start of Turnbull’s first placement on the 10-day IL, though while he’ll be able to return to Detroit’s rotation in early August, even that target date seems fluid if a more serious forearm problem is detected.

Goodrum hit the injured list on June 19 due to a tendon injury within his finger, which seemed concerning enough that Hinch said Goodrum was planning to consult with several hand specialists.  Fortunately, Goodrum has been able to return to the lineup after only a few weeks, and he will now return in his old utilityman role, Hinch said.  Goodrum has mostly worked as the Tigers’ starting shortstop for the last two seasons, and the more regular usage led to a marked dropoff in his production at the plate after roughly league-average numbers in 2018-19.

Krol hasn’t pitched in the majors since a single appearance with the Angels during the 2018 season, as the southpaw bounced around on minor league contracts with the Mets, Reds, Twins, and Tigers (plus a stint in independent ball last season) before finally getting another crack at the big leagues this season.  Krol has a 4.50 ERA over 190 career MLB innings from 2013-18, which included 60 2/3 innings in a prior stint with Detroit in 2014-15.

But Mazzara and Brian Garcia remain. Bring up Hill, platoon with Goodrum in OF. Cut Mazzara, send Garcia down to get his bearings, and add a warm body to the bullpen.

Pretty sure that there’s more than one position player that could do better than Garcia. His last two outings have been worse than terrible.

Guess that makes Kroll the warm body. A player that can be cut when Fulmer, Turnbull, Boyd, or Tehran returns.

last night’s whole pen should be sent down. Norris, Garcia, Jimenez. They might as well trade for Astudillo or Brett Phillips to come out from the pen

Daniel Norris is just flat out unlucky but I think he could benefit by more work. It can be no worse than the trio of Bryan Garcia, Joe Jiminez and Buck Farmer who are not MLB level pitchers. In spite of his failures, I would’ve rather they gave Beau Burrows a longer rope.

I’m more disappointed by DET keeping Nomar Mazara. He can’t hit; he can’t field; he is not part of the future and he is not desirable for trade. Tiger fans will have to bear watching AA wait it out ala JaCoby Jones.

Meanwhile, super plus defensive CF Derek Hill is wasting away on the farm.

Totally agree. Mazara needs to go and it’s time to see Hill for a few weeks.

As smart of a coach as AJ is, I don’t get why he’s keeping Mazara. Just cuz he’s a power lefty is all I can think of.

Well…. it not being AJ’s decision might have something to do with it.

Not much good about any of these moves.

Moving Turnbull to the 60-day is especially concerning. I thought he was sent to Lakeland to get back into pitching shape, but he hasn’t appeared in any games. His injury must be worse than previously expected. Crap!

Tigers needed Turnbull to stay healthy purely for trade bait.

Turnbull has had a setback due to feeling symptoms and is headed to Dallas for evaluation per AJ Hinch.

Any reason that Robson is being kept in the minors? I’m just a fantasy player that isn’t that familiar with the Tigers system

I live near Toledo and watch a lot of Mud Hens games on tv and in person. Cannot imagine why they have not called him up. He cannot possibly do worse than Mazzara. I think players sometimes get the dreaded “organizational player” tag, and their team fails to see them as anything more than that.

Definitely going to need some innings eaters for the second half. Should have signed Peacock.

Why bring up Goodrum, the no-hit and no field wonder instead of Hill. The Tigers should release 3 players, Goodrum, Masara, and Urena.

The talk is about getting rid of Goodrum not activating him.

How sad. BigAl has waited too long and now has very little to trade…..was he on the phone, DAY ONE, when trading opened? If not then I would venture he thinks this is the team with some FAs. Too bad. Hinch is his best trade piece. You’d think BigAl would really be going after SD or TOR or Nl central hard…….guess not. I know all the answers simply because I am not a professional. My advantage.
