Brewers Place Freddy Peralta On Injured List

By Anthony Franco | August 19, 2021 at 3:48pm CDT

The Brewers announced they’ve placed right-hander Freddy Peralta on the 10-day injured list due to right shoulder inflammation. Reliever Hoby Milner was recalled from Triple-A Nashville to take his active roster spot.

Peralta left last night’s start against the Cardinals after just two innings due to shoulder discomfort. He downplayed the issue postgame, telling reporters (including Adam McCalvy of MLB.com) last night that he expected to be able to make his next scheduled start. That obviously won’t be the case, but there’s no indication he’ll require much — if any — time more than the minimal ten days on the shelf.

The Brewers can afford to err on the side of caution. Last night’s win over St. Louis and the Reds’ loss to the Cubs pushed Milwaukee’s lead in the NL Central out to nine and a half games. They’re a very good bet to hang on to a division title, so there’s every reason to play things safe with a pitcher who’ll surely be lined up to start one of their Division Series games if healthy.

Peralta had flashed promise in a swing role between 2018-20, but he’s taken his game to new heights this season. The 25-year-old has finally locked down a permanent spot in the rotation and pitched to a brilliant 2.45 ERA across 121 1/3 frames. That innings total is already the second-highest of any year in his career, trailing only the 141 1/3 frames he logged between Triple-A and the majors in 2018. A brief IL stint can serve to keep his workload in check heading into the season’s final couple months.

Among hurlers with 100+ innings pitched, only Carlos Rodón, teammate Corbin Burnes, Gerrit Cole and Max Scherzer have a strikeout rate superior to Peralta’s 34% clip. Between Burnes, Peralta and Brandon Woodruff, the Brewers figure to enter postseason play with one of the game’s most fearsome playoff rotations.

How little attention the Brewers get……

Small market. No meaningful controversy from the owner, FO, manager or players. Totally professional operation top to bottom. Their top 3 starters stack up with any teams, as does their bullpen…..which is extremely deep. Excellent defense. They can hit and run the bases. As for Freddy Peralta – excellent, quite probably the best #3 starter in MLB……..although no one seems to know who he is and what he’s done in 2021.

Their recent series against the Giants was a joy to watch. Both teams. They’re definitely one the top 5 teams in MLB, and maybe the best. Their mission now it to get everyone healthy for the post-season.

He didn’t say people were “ignoring” the Brewers. He stated “how little attention” they were getting. Some people will call it semantics, however I see it as two separate issues. For the longest time the Brewers were getting a blurb of attention (recognition). Then they started getting a couple of sentences of accolades. I don’t think anyone is ignoring them but (imo) they’re still not getting the (love) attention that they should.

        Uh.
Actually, the entire state of *Wisconsin* is sort of ignoring the Brewers. We have a satellite office there (Hudson – just over the river) & I spend a lot of time there hunting & fishing.

Look. WI is still swept up in the Bucks. & the Packers are far & away the most popular hat worn in America’s Dairy Land. The Aaron Rodgers saga is The Story (& has been) there.

Honestly, I feel like the national press is giving them their “share” of media attention. & every single poster on MLBTR realizes they have an incredible rotation (in particular their top 3).

But I guess “the Brewers get no respect I tell ya…” is probably going to be a good HOTTAKE!. It’s just really not very accurate.

Hard to believe the Dodgers actually have a better ERA+ than the Brewers. The Dodgers have been plugging in people lately. I can understand the Brewers letting Knebel get away, but the fact that the Dodgers got Bickford kind of stings us Brewer fans. How was that allowed to happen?

Not me. Players come and Go. I always wish them well in their new team! The Brewers ,also my team., make a lot of nit piking moves. Some work and some do not! That is why baseball is such a good hot stove league!

Be glad they don’t get any attention. They stole more signs than the 2017 Astros, but since theyre only cheating the Cubs and Pirates and aren’t a consistent winner, who cares? Benefit of being a small market team i guess.

Google “brewers stealing signs”, then have yourself a day. Multiple articles on brewcrewball, a Brewers based site that never really refutes the allegations. Point being, they are just like any other team, trying whatever they can to get an advantage

Source: a second rate beat writer from STL and/or La Russa who tried & failed to accuse Brewers for manipulating the lighting at Am Fam Field-Miller Park back in 2011.

Agree with Samuel. This is a team that clearly deserves more attention from fans everywhere. I really appreciated some of the moves they made to plug holes on the roster. Front office deserves much praise. I for one enjoy watching this team.

It depends on what the roster is at that moment. They’ve already used 60 players on the major league roster and it’s not even September. Counsell will win manager of the year some day, I assume he’s never won because people don’t like how he manages the pitching staff. Maybe crotchety voters don’t like the “out getters” approach.
