Dodgers Place Julio Urias On 10-Day Injured List

By Mark Polishuk | August 14, 2021 at 5:20pm CDT

The Dodgers have placed left-hander Julio Urias on the 10-day injured list due to a left calf contusion.  The open roster spot will be filled by utilityman Zach McKinstry, who has been recalled from Triple-A.

Urias was hit by a pitch in his left calf during last night’s 6-5 Dodgers win over the Mets, though the southpaw went on to pitch two more innings after sustaining the injury.  Assuming that this IL placement is only related to that incident, this could be a pretty minimal absence for Urias, who could end up missing only one start due to an August 23 off-day on the Dodgers’ schedule.  It would leave Los Angeles even more short-handed in the rotation, but the team could conceivably cover Urias’ one missed outing with a bullpen game.

Amidst all of the Dodgers’ pitching injuries, Urias (whose 25th birthday was two days ago) has been a source of stability, tossing 139 2/3 innings over 24 starts.  He has also has an above-average 26.4% strikeout rate and an outstanding 5.3% walk rate while posting a 3.29 ERA.  After playing a huge role in the Dodgers’ championship run last October, Urias looks poised to deliver more important innings for the team this postseason.

Think this is just a fatigue/rest situation or something else? Didn’t watch their game last night but I though I read he got HBP

The Field of Dreams game was magical, though, in some instances, I thought MLB overdid the rural stuff. For example, replacing the toilet paper in the ballpark restrooms with corn cobs wasn’t necessary.

They should let Bill Mumy host next year’s event, as a tribute to his Twilight Zone episode where, as little Anthony Fremont, he sent people he didn’t like into the cornfield. He can do the same thing only with bad players.

ANTHONY FREMONT: “You’re a bad baseball player. You’re a very bad baseball player.”

ANDREW FRIEDMAN It’s good that you sent that lousy player to the cornfield, Anthony. Very good. Now we don’t have to pay him. Do you think you could do the same thing with Trevor Bauer?

I am not a writer nor would many people want to read my attempts at a full article-

Steven Adams, on the other hand, is an amazing writer and I think the article would play well and give the people who don’t just come here to fight with others something to bond over

They’ve never really covered any sort of special event like that in a whole article. Maybe a tidbit at the beginning of a quick hits, but that’s about it.

Exactly. There are plenty of places to read about that game, written by people who specialize in feature-writing and game stories. Every baseball site doesn’t have to cover the same thing.

It is pretty amazing how even a positive request for an article for positive reason, coupled with a compliment to an author, gets slammed on here.

I’m with you, Cap., this place could do with a positive refresher on something like that. There’s a full article on a bruised calf, why not a unique game?

Im actually pretty surprised they didn’t – I mean they have articles on Bauer and Covid why not something happy ….. Idk I was just floored by the game and tryed to transfer that to here , mixed bag of responses but I appreciate your response

You’re wrong JR. Giants have most definitely done more than “squat.” I don’t disagree that at this point, what happens in the playoffs and WS are beginning to come more into focus, but pay your respects where they are due. 5 games ahead of your team and ten ahead of the Friars isn’t squat.

Every team has injuries, but the Pads seem to have had an enormous amount of pitching injuries, and yet they are still in it. Injuries happen to every team, so it isn’t an excuse.. but failing… hard to say that. They have done everything possible to build that team from Free agents and trades, spending money etc, just can’t control injuries too much.. most fans would be appreciative if there team put that effort out..

Dodger JR. I agree that’s where it truly counts but the different with the Giants is that they have wiped the proverbial floor with MLB teams this year, for the most part, and their former star players are once again playing like stars. Add in they avoid the one-game WC against the Padres (another top-tier team) and it could mean a big difference for LAD (who starts, how many relievers necessary to win, etc.).

I have a feeling this is more about innings management than the injury. There has been a lot of chatter about the Dodgers limiting Urias’s innings since he’s already surpassed his career high for a season. This is a way they can have him sit for 2 starts and be fresher down the stretch. At least he doesn’t have any innings incentive clauses in his contract like Kenta Maeda did; they weren’t trying to manage his innings to save his arm, they were doing it to save their $$$.

I believe you are right… he wasn’t going to blow thru the rest of the season missing no starts ….also lines up perfect as his missed start will be against Pitt and they can line him up better to have Buehler Max Urias start the 3 games in SF Sept 3-5

The Dodgers would be the last team in MLB to play those kinds of games. They moved Maeda to the bullpen because it was a good spot for him, in October. To suggest otherwise is ludicrous.

They honestly are not above it, and should be called out when they do. They played the game with Buehler, service time, and they obviously played the $ game with Maeda. Not in every instance, because there were years where he wasn’t the best option in the rotation and others where the were preparing him for the pen. But yes, they clearly did at times exploit his contract.

How did they play games with Buehler’s service time? The rotation at the beginning g of the season was Kershaw, Wood, Ryu, Maeda, and Hill. They didn’t need Buehler until guys started going down. Buehler pitched to an ERA of 7.71 during his September audition in 2017. He wasn’t yet ahead of the other five or Stripling, who also joined the rotation (and became an all-star) when other SPs got hurt.

Tough spot for the Dodgers. No sympathy from me but a lot of young pitchers need rest. The Brewers have done that with a six man rotation and shortened starts. The Dodgers should be able to win games 9-8, if needed. It’s an all star team.
