Giants Reinstate Anthony DeSclafani, Designate Tyler Chatwood For Assignment

By Darragh McDonald | August 29, 2021 at 12:10pm CDT

The Giants announced several roster moves today, reinstating right-hander Anthony DeSclafani from the injured list and first baseman Brandon Belt from the paternity list. To make room for those two, infielder Thairo Estrada was optioned to Triple-A and right-hander Tyler Chatwood was designated for assignment.

It’s a quick turnaround for DeSclafani, who went on the IL on August 19th. That’s great news for the Giants, as the righty has been tremendous for them this season. Over 132 2/3 innings, he has an ERA of 3.26, producing 2.1 fWAR already on the year. With Johnny Cueto also having recently returned from the IL, the Giants rotation is in great shape for the stretch run, as they try to hold off the Dodgers in the NL West. The Giants are currently atop the pennant race by 2 1/2 games.

It’s potentially the end of a very short tenure in San Francisco for Chatwood. He was designated for assignment by the Blue Jays in July after struggling with command issues. In 28 innings out of Toronto’s bullpen, he had an ERA of 5.46, thanks in large part to a bloated walk rate of 16%. (League average for all pitchers is 8.7%.) The Giants then signed him to a minors deal April 7th and added him to the big league roster 10 days later. In two games for the Giants, Chatwood racked up four innings with six strikeouts but also allowed five runs (three earned) with one walk and one hit-by-pitch. The 31-year-old will now go on waivers and, if unclaimed, will be able to elect free agency. If he joins a new organization before the end of the month, even if it’s a minors deal, he will be eligible to play in the postseason for that club.

Tyler Chatwood was always a stopgap and not really likely to help the Giants. It scared me every time he took the mound. Wish him well, but don’t want to see him in Giants uniform again.

Finally Zaidi did what needed to be done with Chatwood. Should have DFA Chatwood after his first game.

For the sake of accuracy, Belt was on the Bereavement List, not the Paternity List.
    His grandmother passed.

Without Theo Epstein running a club, there is probably nobody for Chatwood and his agent to fleece. Too bad.

I think the Giants signed Chatwood to a MiL deal on August 7th, not April 7th.

Good to have DeSclafani back. He’s been tremendous against everyone except the Dodgers. Separating them out, he has a 2.15 ERA against everybody else. Unfortunately his ERA against the Dodgers, in 21 IP, is 8.14. Those Dodger games are why the ERA is as high as it is at 3.26. Still an excellent season though.

Dude is getting LIT UP in Atlanta right now. Unless Kris Bryant can pitch, Frisco will implode in September

Yes, and TonyGwynnSD19 is, and always has been, a troll against the Giants. He says “Frisco” either because he wants to get a rise out San Francisco fans and residents, or he’s simply ignorant. Oh, and Frisco is also a town in Colorado.

Oh, look. More sour grapes from our resident Padres fan, as his lame team languishes16 games behind the Giants. Enjoy another year of irrelevance, Sparky.

Did you just use a 1 game sample to try and discredit what they said? And even if your point had any relevance whatsoever, getting “LIT UP” today still leaves him with a sub 3.40 ERA. You sure owned them man.

The G-men are not “my team,” unfortunately ‘my team’ is the slowly sinking Seattle Mariners. I say that because I am being impartial, unbiased-

The Desclafani signing was one of THE best offseason pickups in all of baseball. When you look around MLB at all the offseason pitching transactions that have failed to live up to their end of the bargain, the return value on Desclafani’s contract has been a good bit of business.

I thought ‘my’ Mariners had one of the best values with Chris Flexen’s contract but Desclafani’s might just top that. I actually hope we can sign DeSclafani next yr. We need one more veteran SP in that rotation

Seems to me I’ve seen predictions of the Giants imploding in June, then July, then August, and now, September. Way to keep moving those goalposts.

I predict there will be a prediction that they’ll implode in October, and then again in the PS.

Why is it that @TonyGwynnSD19, who’s using the great hitter’s name in vain BTW, tries so hard to expose his ignorance?

The Giants are going to implode in:
        M̶a̶y̶
        J̶u̶n̶e̶
        J̶u̶l̶y̶
        A̶u̶g̶u̶s̶t̶

But now it’s September they’re gonna hit a wall.

DeSclafani is getting lit up? How much $$ did SD pay for their rotation? Meanwhile Zaidi goes out & picks up DeScal.& Wood for a LOT less & our rotation has been much better than the Padres. I would be bitter too if I was Padres fan. Let us know how the fishing is in October

I’d like to see Chatwood back with the Angels. I was impressed by him as a rookie. He can spot start or go 2-3 innings out of the pen. Better than going with Jake Petricka.

Glad Chatwood is Gone. And the front office saw the writing on the wall very soon. He just wasn’t a good pitcher for this team. Since his days with Chicago, too much traffic for him to survive.
