Yankees Place Domingo German On 10-Day Injured List

By Mark Polishuk | August 1, 2021 at 12:47pm CDT

The Yankees placed right-hander Domingo German on the 10-day injured list prior to today’s game, as German is suffering from inflammation in his throwing shoulder.  Righty Albert Abreu was called up from Triple-A to fill the spot on the active roster.

German started New York’s 4-2 win over the Marlins last night, lasting four innings and 66 pitches before being removed for a pinch-hitter in the top of the fifth.  It was German’s 18th start in 21 appearances this season, with all three of those relief appearances coming since June 19.  Over German’s last nine outings, only one has lasted beyond five innings — his seven-inning, 93-pitch start against the Red Sox on July 25.

With Andrew Heaney just acquired from the Angels, the Yankees were hoping to have a full rotation in place but they’ve been again left shorthanded due to injury.  It isn’t yet known if German’s injury is fairly minor or if he’ll be out longer than the minimum 10 days, which could run him into the projected late August/early September timelines for Corey Kluber and Luis Severino.  While these recovery timelines could be altered or future injuries could further change plans, the Yankees are hoping to have a surplus of rotation options down the stretch, so German might ultimately end up in the bullpen.

German missed the entire 2020 season while serving an 81-game suspension under the MLB/MLBPA joint domestic violence policy.  The right-hander has a 4.45 ERA/4.01 SIERA over 97 innings this year, with slightly below-average strikeout and hard-hit ball rates.

Maybe Anthony Rizzo can pick up an inning here and there…

Adam Warren is too busy getting shelled in AAA to answer his call up. He may very well be done, @mlbnyyfan.

With his arm, you might see a few 93-95 mph heaters.

Nice rotation on the IL right now — German, Severino, Kluber, Schmidt, King, Peralta….hopefully that’s it, and they all start getting healthy.

German is better suited for the bullpen.

German has some real struggles giving up runs in the first, though. He also tends to have innings where he gives up multiple runs. I see those two things as viable impediments to being a quality reliever.

Conventional wisdom is that starters benefit from a switch to the ‘pen so they can “air it out for an inning or two.”
Loaisiga is an example of that particular phenomenon.

But, I think German’s role is as a serviceable 4th/5th/6th starter. Meaning; how he is being currently used.

What a joke re-calling Abreu. Is this the best out soon-to-be-former GM can do?

He got shellacked in the blowout TB loss but has been very good in spot action this year. Got the best upside compared to Kriske or Nelson.

What do you expect out if the 13th arm on the staff, an all-star?

He’s made 8 appearances on the year for us. So one bad (or really bad – such as it were) outing is going to especially effect his numbers adversely.

We need to have a little patience with this kid. He has Big Stuff that will definitely play in MLB.

Loaisiga was very similar. Took him a couple seasons to find his footing in the bigs. Can’t tell you how many posts I’d seen prior to this year about him that were exactly the same as the above.

& now look at him. Huge weapon out of the bullpen.

Nestor Cortes has been more than capable. He’ll stay in the rotation.

Garcia and Gil have picked the wrong time to struggle in AAA. Both could have had multiple starting opportunities in the show if they were even average AAA’ers this season

It’s been the same trio of Nelson, Mr. 4 WP in 1 inning Kriske and Abreu. Although besides the meltdown TB he’s been so so. Don’t understand why Yanks don’t DFA these guys so they can use someone else like Koerner or Lane. If they don’t use these guys the Yanks will never know what they have. The aforementioned trio do not have the pedigree to perform in NY and prob pass thru waivers easily, even if some team picks’em up Yanks are not losing anything. Warren has control issues that’s needs to be worked out as he has a lot of BB.
