Dodgers Expected To Activate Tony Gonsolin From Injured List

By Anthony Franco | September 8, 2021 at 10:43pm CDT

The Dodgers are planning to reinstate right-hander Tony Gonsolin from the 10-day injured list to start tomorrow afternoon’s game against the Cardinals, manager Dave Roberts told reporters (including Juan Toribio of MLB.com). The 27-year-old hasn’t pitched in a big league game since July 30 because of inflammation in his throwing shoulder.

It has been an injury-plagued year for Gonsolin, who also missed the first couple months of the season with shoulder inflammation. Seeing the promising hurler sidelined by successive shoulder problems was a bit alarming, but it’s a welcome sign that he’s healthy enough to contribute to the Dodgers’ efforts down the stretch.

Gonsolin hasn’t yet carved out a permanent spot in what has generally been a loaded Dodgers rotation in recent seasons. That depth has been thinned out this year, although the forthcoming returns of Gonsolin and Clayton Kershaw (who could make it back himself within the next few days) should go a long way to fortifying that group. When healthy, Gonsolin has been highly effective throughout his career. He owns a 2.65 ERA over 122 1/3 big league innings with an above-average 25.2% strikeout rate. He’s had some uncharacteristic issues with walks this season, although it’s possible his persistent shoulder woes played some role in that.

The Dodgers have reached the point in the season where every game feels pivotal. After dropping tonight’s contest in St. Louis, they fell two games back of the Giants in the NL West with 22 contests remaining on the schedule. There’s no question the Dodgers will make the playoffs, but they’ll need a strong finish to avoid the Wild Card game. After wrapping up their series with the Cardinals tomorrow, Los Angeles has sets against the Padres (twice), Diamondbacks (twice), Reds, Rockies and Brewers to close out the year.

I can’t wait to see him go 3 2/3 innings of 2 hit, 1 run ball with about 6 walks scattered in there.

Lmao I was thinking the same thing. Had him stashed on the IL in like three leagues. It um-didn’t work out…

Doesn’t matter who pitches as long as you have 2 pitchers batting in the lineup. Bellinger, aka Chris Davis, is 0-19 in September, hitting.161 and needs to sit for the remainder of the season.

Ah yes, when we already don’t have a healthy outfield, let’s sit the guy with the potential to single handily win a playoff series, just to show your upset

Upset, we could play almost any other player in the game and be ahead of where we are. He ain’t winning anything and is closer to a DFA then an all star. Cody is a lifetime .189 hitter in the post season, so spare me with he’ll win something. ONE TIMELY HR DOES NOT MAKE A SEASON.

Must suck being a SD baseball guy. Always chasing the Dodgers even when you spend money. Belli will be fine.

Maybe, Maybe not, but ask the Brewers if Bellingers defense can win a game

Bellinger’s career numbers are pedestrian 257 BA, 16 WAR in 5 seasons. He did have one good year though, but so did Will Myers, and they’re looking like the same player, good for a spurt, bad for long stretches, injury-prone

Bellinger is one of the best defensive CF in baseball. CT3 is mediocre in left field. They don’t have a realistic option to replace his defense with Pollock out

Peters looks pretty good in Texas. Maybe instead of acquiring a pitcher ON the IL and one that hadn’t pitched in 2 years they could have acquired an OF.er that can actually hit?

Realistically, they didn’t expect Bellinger to keep struggling with the bat. Obviously.

But even with him on the bench and Pollock healthy, where are you playing your big acquisition? Mookie in RF, CT3 in Cf and pollock in LF, Bellinger off the bench. Where do they go?

Honestly, the alternative to Cody here is Gavin Lux taking every day at bats. Bellinger is better on defense and has a higher chance to catch lighting in a bottle than Lux. That’s the logic. They’ve already tried every OF’er in the system. There’s not a lot

Hahah Peters does not look pretty good on Texas. His OPS is lower than his time in LAA and he’s K’d in 33% of his PAs

I agree that they don’t have much in the minors as a replacement. I also see signs of Bellinger snapping out of his funk. They just need to ride with him

I like it when Bellinger is in the lineup which seems likely, at least until AJ comes back.

I normally can’t agree with what you say but here I support you. He is at best rn a defensive replacement with potential to hit a homer.

I’m puzzled by his approach, especially on a Dodger team coached to have such plate discipline. He seemed to be shortening his swing 2 years ago, heading for superstardom, but has regressed. A lot.

Gonsolin needs to clean up his command or else he’ll have a very small role in the playoffs. He’s been extremely lucky issuing that many free passes. You can’t trust him at this point until he shows you more.

Robert’s said Tony has the bulk of tomorrow’s game. Follow the link in the article, it’s to Twitter. Negative right off the bat lol

If they wanted Tony to only go 3, he’d have been here weeks ago. He’s going 5 or close to it from now on is my guess

Lol, Gonsolin will be lucky to pitch 3 productive innings tomorrow. It’ll be today all over again except Wainwright isn’t pitching, so maybe we have a chance? They face a RHP, so there’s a hole in the lineup at 6, Barnes 7, McKinney 8, Bellinger and 9 tomorrow.

McKinney has been pretty terrible all year. That’s a spot that should be replaced before Bellinger

Backup catcher- year long DFA candidate- struggling guy post surgery- pitcher. Yes that’s not ideal ha

I expect more than 3. I’d be ok with 4, but from Robert’s comments+how long Gonsolin took to rehab, I’d be surprised if it’s not closer to 5(or at least that range of pitches) and I’d be real shocked if he’s pulled at 3 innings- 50-55 pitches, for ex, given the stage of the team. I’d expect at least 75-80 pitches before he’s pulled. They rehabbed him as a starter+Need the length

Gonsolin has a 2.65 ERA and a 4.55 xFIP. He is EXTREMELY lucky and would expect big regression. Along with constant shoulder issues hes a huge risk

Gonsolin against Woodford today. This should be an interesting game. It’s either going to be something like 12-10, or one of these guys could spin a gem for 6 innings? WTH knows?
