Rangers’ Kyle Cody Undergoes Shoulder Surgery

By Anthony Franco | September 29, 2021 at 8:46pm CDT

Rangers right-hander Kyle Cody underwent a labral debridement procedure on his injured right shoulder, the club informed reporters (including Jeff Wilson). He’s expected to miss the first half of next season.

Cody missed almost all of this year due to the injury that necessitated today’s procedure. He landed on the injured list on April 25 with shoulder inflammation and was never able to make it back to the diamond. Today’s development unfortunately ensures he’ll miss a significant portion of next season as well, meaning it’ll be well over a full calendar year between Cody’s most recent and next big league outings.

The 6’7″ hurler broke into the majors last season. Over the past two years, he’s tossed 34 innings over fifteen appearances in a swing capacity. Cody owns a solid 3.71 ERA despite strikeout and walk rates that are both a bit worse than league average (21.8% and 10.2%, respectively). He flashed a promising three-pitch mix in his limited look, though, and seemed to have a good chance at cracking an uncertain Texas pitching staff next year. That’ll now be put on hold for at least a few months.

Texas will need to reinstate Cody from the 60-day injured list over the offseason. He’ll occupy a spot on the 40-man roster throughout the winter but seems likely to wind up back on the 60-day IL at the start of next season. Cody isn’t on track to reach arbitration eligibility until the 2023-24 offseason.

this guy might actually have the worst injury luck of anyone who’s managed to make the Majors in the end

He’s not gonna sniff a role in the rotation unless it’s as an opener. His role will be a MR arm if he comes back healthy.

And what type of scouting do you have that suggest this? You make a ton of bold comments and a good portion of them seem to be very incorrect.

How can you tell with such a small sample size that he won’t be able to crack a rotation?

Have you seen Max Scherzers numbers during his first couple big league campaigns?

I make a lot of predictions because I find them to be fun and careless, but this isn’t really a prediction, it’s moreso a statement of inevitability.

For starters (no pun intended), Cody hasn’t pitched over 100 innings since 2017. In 2022 that will have been 5 years ago. Hardly a starter’s workload, especially coming back from the multiple surgeries he’s had.

Secondly, the Rangers are chock full of staring pitching depth in addition to the few starters they pick up over the winter. Allard, Howard, Burke, Otto, Hearn, Dunning, Alexy, Latz, and maybe even Winn will all be either in our AAA/long relief bin or a starter next season, and they are all higher on the chopping block when it comes to starting games over Cody.

Finally, this has absolutely nothing to do with his production in his limited time. While I don’t think that his production has been good over his small sample size, that’s not what I’m judging whenever I say that he’s not gonna be a rotation member next season. It’s everything else at play.

Btw, I saw that little Max Scherzer Cliff Note you snuck in there, and I’m thoroughly mind-f**ked. He has quite literally had ONE below average season in his entire career, and it was still a pretty good year. Only a 93 ERA+ that season, but he still ate 195 innings for the Tigers despite that “career worst” season. What?

Gotta agree with 29 on this one. Cody probably going to be an afterthought for the future

It’s a shame.. got awful advice from advisor not signing in 2nd round of in 2015.. loses a bunch of $ going in 6th round a year later.. injury bug continues .. only ones happy are twins not spending all that money when he turned down great offer in 2nd .. do hope he can comes back..

Did he get awful advice or did he simply make a bad decision? He signed for about $580K, with slot money for the Twins second round pick being in the low 800s, but we don’t know what the Twins offered. Was he looking for above slot or did the Twins low ball, leading to no agreement? Either way, looks like he left 150-250K on the table depending on the Twins offer. Still, it was his call.

That should be right about when he’s eligible to return from the IL!
