Yankees Designate Sal Romano For Assignment

By Anthony Franco | September 10, 2021 at 3:08pm CDT

The Yankees announced they’ve designated Sal Romano for assignment. The move creates active and 40-man roster space for Michael King, who has been reinstated from the 60-day injured list.

It was a very brief stay in the majors for Romano, whose contract was just selected yesterday. The right-hander allowed a run on two hits while recording two outs in last night’s loss to the Blue Jays before being bumped from the roster. It’s the fourth time Romano has been designated for assignment this year, as he’s also been waived by the Reds, Yankees previously, and Brewers. Between the three clubs, the 27-year-old owns a 5.84 ERA in 24 2/3 innings, with below-average strikeout (14%) and ground-ball (40.2%) rates but a fine 8.8% walk percentage.

The Yankees will now place Romano on waivers in the next few days. He’s out of minor league option years, so any team that claims him would have to keep him on the active roster or else place him on waivers themselves. If he passes through unclaimed, Romano would have the right to reject an outright assignment in favor of free agency.

King hasn’t pitched since July 8 because of a right middle finger contusion. The 26-year-old has been solid in a swing role for the Yankees this season, working to a 3.72 ERA with decent strikeout and walk numbers over fourteen appearances (including six starts).

Can he take Heaney with him when he leaves?

Heaney should be in prison the way he pitches.

I don’t think even prison would accept Heaney at this point. He’s about as welcome as a leper.

Remember, the Yankees traded junk for Heaney. Literally

Heaney isn’t helping his free agency out much with how he’s been pitching. I’m guessing the Angels were thrilled to turn him into 2 prospects.

YES WE WERE. (sorry for the all caps). He struggled for far too long, and we were grateful the Yankees took him off the team’s hands…

Yankees stink! Why is Boonie keeping Monty in the game for so long?

They need length to protect the pen as there are important games ahead against division rivals. It sucks but it is what it is. I remember a game where Boone kept Tanaka in a game after he had given up 12 earned runs.

The way Yanks are swinging their bats lately this game is over. Every game is important.

Because Boone does what the front office says. Put the mileage on an already repaired arm who probably won’t get starts if they make the playoffs and save the bullpen. Their pen will be their only hope to advance if they get to the postseason.

The way the Yanks are playing these past 11 games, they don’t deserve to play in playoffs.
Overhauling the team isn’t the answer, at this point we won’t be able to deal Torres, Andujar, Frazier, Sanchez… for any decent players unless they trade away likes of Volpe and other top minor leaguers. Gumby has pitched well this year but the Yanks O hasn’t supported him in many of his games.

I’m wondering if Cashman is fired if the Yankee don’t clinch a wild card.

Let’s be real. Time to start thinking about next year. We need a major overhaul!! Hitters that that can hit and have power not batters that have power but can’t hit situationally. We also need at least 2 starting pitchers that are not number 5 starters like Montgomery and German. We also need a closer! And a real bench!! Like I said a major overhaul. Wish George was still around.

I understand the need for left handed bats for the short RF, but getting Gallo was beyond stupid.

I agree getting Gallo all along was a HUGE mistake. Gallo very similar to all other Yankee players all or nothing hitters. The Yankees needed more left handed hitters but not Gallo. I was hoping the Yankees got Benintendi instead with the package the Yankees traded Gallo for. Does anyone know if Benintendi is off limits on KC?

      Damn.
Sure it’s been an ugly stretch, but there’s a lot of Doom & Gloom on this thread. Yanks are still sitting in a playoff spot.
I don’t see that changing, either. Bet.

We are certainly a flawed team. & we seem hell bent on making things difficult on ourselves.

Yet we have seen what this club can do when they are clicking. Just need to start winning some games again. Not always for the “right” reasons, but this squad has certainly been interesting to follow over the course of this year.

Love your comments and admire your positivity. But I’m going on the record as saying the season is over. Remember they close the season with 3 games in Toronto and 3 games at home with Tampa. The Red Sox finish with Baltimore and Washington. Toronto will have those 3 games with the Yankees in Toronto and will most likely have a lead over the Yankees by then. If I’m wrong feel free to give it to me big time!!

          Man.
I just can’t help myself from optimism. Drove ex-wife #2 crazy.
But you may be right, @Mickey777.

I can absolutely see this team falling a game or two short of the play-in game. I can also see these guys winning an AL pennant, too. I keep watching because I just have to know how it ends. This team’s performance is all over the place, man.

One thing I am quite sure of is: they’ve another run or two left in them. Bet.

          Hope I am too, man.

I will not argue that we are not a flawed team. Yet, we are still a good ballclub nonetheless. We have a true ace. A pen that goes 6+ deep. Our starting lineups now have 7 (sometimes more) league average bats or better. We have firepower on the bench.
Teams will not be looking forward to playing us in October. Bet.

Also: if you are wrong, well whatever.
I shan’t be “giving” it to to you in any way. You’re a Yankee guy.
As such, we need to stick together. Lots of jealousy & “hate” on the board for us & our squad.

Let’s get another win tonight, uh?

Benintendi will be a FA after next season. I can see Salvatore Perez or Bobby Witt Jr being off limits.

          Personally, I really like Gallo.
He *is* another TTO guy. & we do have a lot of those.

But he brings a lot more than just that.
He is an elite defensive player first. He’s one of the 25 best defensive players in MLB. Regardless of position. He brings lineup balance. He has good speed & is athletic.

Some of the younger fellas on the board got me looking at him as a glove first player. One whom happens to OPS over .800 & could rip 40 jacks.

I will take Gallo over Beninineninntenddiini every time.
