Prior to the lockout, the Giants worked quickly to revamp a rotation that appeared poised to lose as many as four members to free agency. Right-hander Anthony DeSclafani returned on a three-year, $36MM contract and was joined by lefty Alex Wood, who inked a two-year deal worth $25MM. Right-hander Alex Cobb was add to the mix on a two-year, $20MM deal.
That gives San Francisco three veteran arms to slot in behind burgeoning ace Logan Webb, but the Giants also allowed top 2020-21 starter Kevin Gausman to depart, declining to match the five-year, $110MM contract he received from the Blue Jays. The decision to let Gausman walk is of extra note now, as ESPN’s Kiley McDaniel reports in his latest look at what to expect throughout the league, post-lockout, that there’s a belief the Giants aren’t keen on pursuing any targets with nine-figure asking prices.
That serves as a potential explanation for why the team ultimately let Gausman leave, and it could also be instructive when forecasting what’s on the horizon for president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi, GM Scott Harris and the rest of the front office. Zaidi has already thrown some cold water on the idea of re-signing Kris Bryant, for instance, and if the Giants are indeed averse to $100MM+ commitments, his return would seem highly unlikely. San Francisco didn’t seem like a great match for most of the remaining free agents with that type of asking price in the first place (e.g. Carlos Correa, Freddie Freeman, Trevor Story), though eschewing contracts of this magnitude could take them out of the running not only for Bryant but for Nick Castellanos, who has reportedly sought a seven- or even eight-year deal.
An aversion to lengthy deals of this magnitude would align with the approach employed by the archrival Dodgers during Zaidi’s time as general manager under L.A. president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman. Like the Dodgers, the Giants are a major-market team with huge payroll capacity, but we’ve yet to see them dole out the type of long-term arrangements that were more common under the prior Giants front office regime. That’s not to say Zaidi’s Giants definitively won’t sign a $100MM+ deal at some point — they reportedly pursued Bryce Harper when he was a free agent — but thus far, indications point more toward the shorter-term, higher-annual-value deals that are increasingly popular as many teams seek to mitigate long-term risk.
Whenever the transaction freeze finally thaws, the Giants still have some work to do. In addition to another proven rotation piece, at least one outfield upgrade would make sense, and there’s always room for a contending club to bolster its bullpen. The Giants have about $126MM in 2022 commitments and about $135MM worth of luxury-tax obligations at the moment, per Roster Resource’s Jason Martinez, which ought to leave ample room for spending. Michael Conforto, Kyle Schwarber and Seiya Suzuki are among the notable free-agent alternatives still on the outfield market, and the likely implementation of a DH in the National League would give the Giants further runway to explore creative options. As for the pitching needs, Carlos Rodon is seeking a multi-year deal but probably won’t command an especially lengthy deal after ending the season with shoulder concerns.
Beyond the free-agent market, the Giants (and other teams) have myriad trade opportunities to consider. The A’s and Reds are known to have starting pitchers available. The Mets’ recent wave of free-agent spending pushed some notable bats to the bench. Speculatively, San Francisco could swing for the fences and try to pry Ketel Marte from the D-backs or even Cedric Mullins from the Orioles. There’s no real limit to what paths the Giants could explore, particularly since the team’s farm system has improved by leaps and bounds in recent years (landing No. 5 among MLB clubs on Baseball America’s mid-August rankings).
Kewldood69
I was bummed when the Giants plucked Zaidi from the Dodgers because he knows what he is doing. He’s like the anti Dombrowski – smart with money. Anyway, it’s cold as hell here in Orange County this morning. Go Dodgers.
Francys01
Zaidi is a genius. He knows well how to run a franchise.
fred-3
They massively overachieved this year. He’s probably expecting a step back in performance from the team.
scottn59c
That could be, but even if it is, it’s all the more justification for waiting to see how the next generation of Giants look before committing to generational contracts (which is pretty dumb altogether IMO unless it’s a true legacy player). What do the Giants have in Bart and Luciano and Ramos, etc?
konalawrence
As a life-long Giants fan, I much prefer The Zaidi way!
paddyo furnichuh
@Scottn…. Who would be a true legacy player? I’m guessing you would not classify Bryant as such.
If Webb continues what he did in 2021, would maybe he getbig long-term contract after 2023 as a legacy player.
I ask as it seems by the time a baseball player has performed long enough to have developed some sort of legacy, he will be deemed too old to get a high AAV, longer term contract.
paddyo furnichuh
The 2nd paragraph should have had a *?*
scottn59c
@Paddy, yeah, you’re right: I don’t consider Bryant a legacy player. Buster Posey was a legacy player worthy of his 8 year extension in ’13, but I wouldn’t sign Bryant for 8 years right now. FWIW, though, I think Harper is a legacy player, and I wanted the Giants to sign him, but for less than 10 years, which proved to be impossible at the time.
Webb still has a lot to prove, and if it does turn out he’s of ace caliber, the Giants have him locked up for quite some time already. If you think I’m wary of signing a position player to a 100m+ contract, you can probably guess how I feel about pitchers.
I argued elsewhere in my responses that I think it’s in the Giants’ best interest to see what they have in their graduating farm class before committing huge money. What if Joey Bart is league average? There’s no core to build around right now, but rather a lot of vets who somehow put it all together last year. I’m not convinced that spending big and into the long-term is a wise move, given the makeup of this team. I don’t think Zaidi is, either.
stpbaseball
it seems like all the great pitchers the Giants develop age poorly. I wonder how much they want to invest in young pitchers after Cain, lincecum, lefty in Arizona fell off so quickly
scottn59c
Giants haven’t had a homegrown great (pitcher) in some time. Hope Webb turns out to be for real.
SalaryCapMyth
@Scott. I guess great pitchers are pretty uncommon.
Brew’88
Salarycap hits nail on head
scottn59c
I know Salarycap was being a little snarky, and I do agree with the sentiment that great homegrown pitchers are hard to come by…but the Giants had developed a LOT of them during their championship years (Lincecum, Bumgarner, Cain…). But yeah, those guys are exceptions. The far more likely outcome of a #1 pick spent on a pitcher is going to be a Crick, Stratton, Beede, or Bickford.
Sal Trent
Very impressed with Webb last season. We do have some talent in our MiLB teams but not many are pitchers. I liked the way Estrada turned out & Bart should have been given a chance to be on the senior team. Instead, the Giants went with Casali. LOL.
mister guy
there actually wasn’t a lot of overperformance, just optimized performances. With the absence of gausman, bryant and such there is a need to fill those positions with optimized replacements as well as depth that can be moved as they did last year when dickerson underperformed.
claude raymond
Headline is: “Giants unlikely to pursue free agents with nine-figure asking prices”. Then in the story McDonald reports “there’s a belief the Giants unlikely to pursue free agents with nine-figure asking prices”. So this headline and this story and all our posts have all been drawn from a “belief”. There are no quotes, no team statements and no beyond shadows of doubts comments….just a belief. Any one of us could have written this article. Think about it. Not me, not scott59, not konalawrence know any less than what is “believed”. We all believe Zaidi will get the right personal. He’s done it 3 years running. AND we all know, as Scott says regarding generational/legacy contracts vs future commitments, that Zaidi will be prudent. Those players listed like Suzuki and Rodon and trade targets are not 9 figure players but are potential pickups. And the Giants have great pitching prospects in low to mid minors. The BELIEF is that they will be quick to the majors. And I’m not talking about Beede, or Hjelle or Corry. The story told us nothing. But it got us posting so it did its job.
SFGiants4ever
Claude, Corry is actually one of the few really talented pitchers in the system, his problem is all control, his stuff is dominant. When he doesn’t walk anyone, he hardly gives up hits, strikes out a ton of batters and showed a couple of times this year he still has it. Unfortunately his walks were the worst of his career. I read an article about him where they mentioned he changed something in his delivery during the pandemic shutdown and that seems to really have caused the loss in control. Hopefully he rights the ship this offseason because he has the stuff to be a #1 or #2 starter.
Harrison obviously, and Murphy are the two that standout right now as future starters, and hopefully their development in 22′ continues to maybe get them competing for a roster spot in 23′.
Hjelle is likely at best a 5 or maybe a BP position, I didn’t care for the pick when they drafted him, and so far in the minors he hasn’t shown anything to make you think he will be any better than a back of the rotation piece.

I’m not entirely sure why the narrative exists against Dombrowski.
He’s smart with money too. He just spends more of it. People initially complained about deals to the likes of eovaldi, and yet, he’s been vindicated for the most part.
Detroit had a long run of success. And, for the most part the deals handed out seem to have passed the smell test.
In Boston, dombrowski was saddled by poor signings by his predecessor – cite to Pablo, to Hanley, etc, tying up resources.
Zaidi is is own kind of smart too, but I wouldn’t say anti-dombrowski.
Dorothy_Mantooth
It’s not that Dombrowski spends too much money; it’s more that he pillages the talent in the farm system to acquire win-now players. Hard to argue with his strategy as it proved successful in Boston but he took a #3 ranked farm system in Boston and turned it into a bottom 5 system within 3 years. That’s why Boston brought in Bloom. Not only did he need to get the spending under control, he needed to rebuild the pipeline of young talent in the minor leagues, which he has done very well so far in the 2 years he’s been here. Dombrowski is a win at all costs GM, while Friedman, Zaidi and hopefully Bloom are also win now, but not at the expense of the future, GMs.
Samuel
Please……
Dombrowski succeeded with the Marlins and Tigers by building a farm system from nothing.
He was hired by the Red Sox to win, and win NOW. He did that, and rest assured he let Red Sox ownership know that he’d have to trade off players from the farm system to accomplish that.
For some reason you people don’t understand that POBO’s work for the owner. As in any business they present options to ownership – what it will cost in cash and assets, and what are the chances of success. Ultimately a strategy is agreed upon, and it’s the POBO’s job to execute it.
If Henry and company were unhappy about Dombrowski running down the farm they’d have fired him when he started doing it.
GASoxFan
Dorothy, that’s another bit of misinformation…
Please list out the prospects dombrowski sold off that have provided great value beyond cheap replacement level free agents.

Honestly I’m okay with this as a Giants fan. I know they won’t be nearly as good next season, so why invest $100M+ when the top prospects probably won’t be difference makers for another year at least. Might as well spend frugally this year and gear up for the top FA’s next year or in 2023
differentbears
The Giants are in good hands. This is very much the same approach as the Dodgers, as the article states. Wait for the right time and the right player to spend big money on. After all, Dodger fans got a little impatient when they didn’t land players like Cole, Rendon, or Harper. Little did we know it’d be Mookie Betts that we would get, and then extend.
Even with San Francisco playing out of their minds in 2021, Zaidi refuses to go against the process. Some fans clamor for the perceived “win now” moves, while the likes of Zaidi and Friedman look for the moves to build a perennial contender.
Gmen777
I feel the same. Last year was fun but Zaidi has a plan and I still think 2023 (or whenever Luciano, Harrison and Matos start to graduate) is when they’re gonna go all in. I hope Bart can put it together this year
Redwolves3
2022 will determine whether or not Zaidi is building a Giants roster that can be a “perennial” winner.
xtraflamy
The Giants can win 3 world series in 5 years and still people will say they were lucky or just got hot at the right time or overperformed. There’s a deep bias, but it’s a tired story.
They were supposed to win what? 78 games this year? Ha!
Keep underestimating them.
differentbears
Btw, I take no pleasure in the thought of the Giants being really good for a long time.
Though it is probably best for baseball and both the Dodger and Giants fanbases if they’re competing for divisions against each other. The few years when San Francisco was terrible was enjoyable for me, but so are seasons like 2021.
tc55
Farhan is not going to do any thing that will prevent the Giants not to be in the playoffs this coming year. He would look pretty weak if he went from a 107 game winning season to not making the playoffs the next year. I do not think the FA class in 2023 is as strong as 2022 so winning now is Farhan’s first priority. Be patient and I think you will be surprised at the end result this year.
sleepyfloyd
You are correct giants won’t be as good record wise.
But this “graduate the farm” thing is a myth – no one knows if any of these guys will be solid everyday players – the giants don’t gave a great record this past decade developing any decent everyday players. And Webb is the only starter and a couple of relief guys.
GETBUCKETS
That’ll disappoint some giants fans that were hoping for a spending spree.
But, he has made some notable under the radar moves that worked out for the team in the past. He got the job for a reason.
stymeedone
Are there really any starting pitchers left that are likely to go for that much anyway. It really doesn’t remove very many FA from their reach, even offensive players.

True just the notable names mentioned
They should look to extend Webb soon as well

Baseball 1600
Giants offered 300M to Harper when Zaidi was in charge
Correa and Bryant aren’t that type of player that Harper, Betts, Trout, Acuna, Soto, etc are.
seamaholic 2
Correa is very much on that level. And younger than some of them, too.
Redwolves3
Giants don’t need to sign a CHEATER. Much rather have Crawford and he’s a perfect mentor for Luciano.
GETBUCKETS
I disagree
Correa is a lindor-type, which is good but slightly overrated
Not worth the money imo as he isn’t that perennial mvp type of player
CamFrost
You’d be ecstatic if the Giants signed Correa.
Jean Matrac
I don’t think Lindor and Correa are a good comparison. Lindor is an elite defender, while Correa is just very good. But, Correa is a better hitter. His career wRC+ is a significant 11 points better than Lindor’s.
And whether either is a perennial MVP candidate is an odd criterion. The vast majority of MVP winners are from corner positions, that put up big counting stats. SSs are like catchers, and the value of having a good one, that also hits, isn’t computed for MVP awards.
Miguel Tejada won in 2002, with a 128 OPS+. Tejada finished his career with a 108 OPS+. Correa has averaged a 127 OPS+ for his entire career. So if a SS should win an MVP, he has a very good chance to be the one to win it.
BRUH.SF.BRUH
@Tad Correa won the platinum glove this year, meaning voters viewed him as having the best defense in all of baseball regardless of position. He’s good. Really good.
GETBUCKETS
I agree with those points
I’m not saying win the MVP award, but even just a perennial candidate.
Is he someone that hugely impacts the game that much that he’s worth that much money?
Betts, acuna, trout, Soto, ohtani, freeman, ohtani, buxton (healthy), tatis, vlad jr, Harper, etc. they seem have much bigger impacts than Correa. Even Trea Turner seems to. Maybe it’s just me though. He’s only 27 and finished 5th this year so maybe he will be and I’m wrong.
Also, they do factor in defense numbers into those awards as well not just hrs and rbis.
Redwolves3
No way. CHEATERS don’t belong on the GIANTS.
Redwolves3
Ask the Dodgers and Yankees what they really think about Correa.

You’re an idiot. Giants gave had plenty of guys who Dr the ball pitching it taken steroids, every team has.
Steve Adams
Yeah, I think even the teams with this general aversion have that one player for whom they might make the exception. The Giants definitely pursued Harper, though that may have been more ownership-driven than Zaidi-driven.
That said, the Dodgers let Seager walk, didn’t overextend themselves for Scherzer this year or Cole when he was a free agent, etc. despite having the payroll to do so. For all the spending power the Dodgers have, they’ve only gone over $100MM to sign a player (free agents and extensions alike) twice in more than seven years under Friedman.
seamaholic 2
They let Seager walk because they had an even better SS (whom they are paying a lot of money and will likely extend) already on roster.
Samuel
I don’t live by statistics. The only one I find interesting is WAR, and of course there are different versions of it. While I hardly think WAR is the end-all / be-all, in general it does put some things into perspective.
The other day I was looking 2021 player WAR on Fangraphs. Now I like Trea Turner and have felt for a few years that he radically impacts a game – on O, D, and with his baserunning. But the most eye-opening thing I saw in the Fangraphs ranking was Trea finishing 4th in WAR for all MLB players.
Freidman uses far more sophisticated analytical tools than those available to the public. But I tend to believe he knows exactly how valuable Trea is to a team – far more so than Corey Seager.
Brew’88
I think Turner is a slightly better player than Seager but keep in mind that Turner played 148 games last year with 6.2 WAR, while Seager played just 95 games with 3.7 WAR. Their GP/WAR ratios are actually quite similar, both last year and throughout their careers.
differentbears
And the Dodgers offered Rendon and Harper short term, high AAV deals. Mookie was initially a rental, but Friedman clearly saw him as a player to try and sign for the long haul. Might be the example of an exception that proves the rule.
Zaidi certainly has players in mind to pay up for, but the 2022 free agent class doesn’t appear to have the ones he wants.
kcusgnikcufsregdod
Mookie is a generational player, he’s only one of a handful of players worth a massive contract. Aside from Correa, no one on the free agent market this year is a generational player.

giant4life
Crazy nobody predicted that Farhan was going to be cheap right? Weird how the Dodgers finally won a WS once he left and they were done with their payroll cuts. Also strange how they never replaced him.
If you want to give credit to Farhan for Muncy and Taylor that’s totally ligit. Not sure how much credit he deserves for the guys they actually drafted like Seager, Pederson, Buehler, Bellinger, Verdugo, Lux, Smith, etc. based on 3 drafts with the Giants so far it seems like Friedman made most of those pics.
Hopefully Farhan is done cutting payroll here in a year or two and takes his services elsewhere. I’m sure the Yankees will be in need of a good cut man around then.
Pete'sView
I see you’re back at your anti-Zaidi posts.
seamaholic 2
Generally agree. Giants are old and nearly made it to the promised land last year. This is the last kind of situation where you worry about someone six years from now when they’re declining and expensive. You spend and watch that flag flying forever. Giants fans have this weird idea of how good its farm is (it’s alright at best), and to what degree Farhan is working on some master plan as opposed to just trying to prove he’s the smartest guy in the room and too cute by half.
I’m telling you right now, that rotation is gonna be a dumpster fire. They lucked out with injuries and over-performance to an almost ridiculous degree last year, but that’s not gonna last. And they don’t have Posey catching them anymore. Rookie catchers call bad games and get no love from umps.
BRUH.SF.BRUH
@seamaholic good at best? 5th ranked, as mentioned above, is only good at best? Lol you and @giant4life should get married. It’s not just about top 100 prospects. The system is deep and loaded.

As a lifelong Giants fan, I’m all for responsible spending in order to create a perennial contender rather than spending just to spend.
How quickly some forget the god awful mess that spending just to spend got SF into (which they are still trying to recover from)…
If Farhan and co. can continue to prove that they’re able to get more out of overlooked players than other teams and win in the process, I really can’t understand the insistence that he doesn’t know what he’s doing.
Please stop whining
Samuel
Mr. Zaidi is doing the same thing that not only the Dodgers are doing, but the Brewers, Rays and Astros do…..along with what the Guardians do with pitching.
It’s all about sustainable contention, leaving money and prospects in reserve to pick up a few players during the stretch run to fill that years needs if they’re in contention (needs that can only be found out by playing that season). And they stay in contention not by throwing money at free agents after they just had a great walk year, but rather by scouting to find players that are either being misused or mishandled, bringing them in for reasonable salaries, and have the staffs coach them up.
Those are may favorite teams to follow. They always overperform expectations, and each year at this time fans say it can’t continue. The teams may have to take a step back for a year or two if needed, but don’t have to go into a full blown tear-it-down / build-it-up rebuild.
The point is – don’t box yourself in by thinking you can forecast where the team will be years in advance. Let the situation play itself out each year.
kcusgnikcufsregdod
i thought about counter-arguing your post, but there’s so much stupidity in it it’s not worth my time. Sit this one out dude.
Breck68
In my opinion Farhan Zaidi will nott give out any contracts more than 3 years or more than forty million to any one player and the players know this. So the players will use the Giants to drive up contract prices on other teams.
JerryBird
You have to set limits. The nine figures sounds reasonable, I guess. I think another reason for not pursuing Kevin Gausman was that during his nine year career, he really doesn’t have the track record you would want to invest what the BJays did, at least that’s how I look at it. The Giants have done a good job so far this offseason. I would like to see Bryant return, but that would go against the nine figure limit. Too bad.
Sal Trent
I don’t feel the Giants have done much of anything this off-season. Who have we gotten to replace Gausman? Bryant is gone, who is replacing his bat? We need Castellanos & a pitcher !! Not many Gausman-type pitchers out there. We will have to get lucky AGAIN with a AAA SP..
scottn59c
Is Logan Webb really a “burgeoning ace”? I know he looked great last year, but that came out of nowhere and on the heels of two (smaller sample) MLB seasons of an ERA in the 5’s. He has some more proving to do before he’s really the ace of the staff. Remember Dereck Rodriguez? Looked like a stud for one season and then got obliterated. Now languishing in AAA…
Gmen777
While I’ll agree Webb has more to prove I feel a D Rod comparison is really reaching. Webb was a prospect with some pedigree a few years ago and was absolutely dominant down the stretch. D Rod was a no name prospect (aside from being Pudge’s son) who put together a good stretch.
seamaholic 2
Webb had a stretch like none of us has seen in a long time. For three months he almost literally did not miss a spot. No change ups left high, no hangers, nothing. How does one suddenly do that?

Zaidi has worked hard to get MLB roster and payroll flexibility + farm depth. When baseball resumes new national tv contracts will be kicking in for 2022 which aside from the lockout is probably the biggest driver of large contracts this off-season. Many high profile free agents target the off-season prior to new TV contracts kicking in for that very reason. more “bad’ contracts come out of this sort of off season (hey MLBTR there’s a topic for an article 😉
I expect SF to be active in the trade market, and opportunistic in how they deploy their capital. I do really think they wish to see what the new CBA says and work from there.

Does make sense to spend money on free agency anyways most players have already peaked at age 28-30 and the way they currently pay players in baseball u don’t become a free agent till there 28

As a Giants fan, I understand this, however disappointing it feels. If we see some of those prospects finally emerge as stars (like a Webb) then it will help the anxiousness of fans like myself. That was how the last era of success was built (3 titles in 5 years), and homegrown stars are always better. In recent years however there has been too many average at best prospects like a Duggar or Slater. Also, Bryant was a fun mid-season pickup, and it would be a blast to see him stick around. Alas, fans feelings don’t build success, and Zaidi has only proven he can find success his way so far, so in Zaidi I trust.
PutPeteRoseInTheHall
Couldn’t agree more. Especially about the part where you said that homegrown players are generally better. You get more time with them and you really get to see them develop, unless there’s a prospect you have had your eye on for awhile. Plus, homegrown players just feel better, at least from a fan’s perspective
rb305
Again, as a fan, I have fond memories of this last decade of homegrown stars, the Posey, Crawford, Sandoval, Belt, Bumgardner, Lincecum types. Even those who didn’t reach such heights, like Matt Duffy is remembered with fondness.
Also, I might add that every championship team is build at home in baseball, and you fill in the holes with free agent contracts and trades. This is not the NBA where you can build a “super team” and win with cash ala Lakers.
What I hope does not happen, is the Giants get cheap, like an A’s or Marlins model where you make a run then dump your homegrowns. I know it is complicated in Oakland, but that is a fan killing way to go. I don’t see the Giants doing this, and the Belt and Crawford contracts seem to prove this to be true, but I always have that fear when they choose not to spend big.
PutPeteRoseInTheHall
I share the same fear. I don’t like when teams play like that. But, I doubt Farhan would go that far. I think he is not as willing to spend right now just because of the holes that the Giants had coming into the offseason. Also, I don’t necessarily think that 2021 was a complete fluke, but I’m not sure the Giants will end up with 100+ wins again. Gausman was amazing in the first half which helped a lot, even though he regressed a good amount in the next half. I think Zaidi wants to see another good year or two before he goes all in on competing. Obviously he wants to win but I think he knows that some prospects are knocking on the door and he doesn’t want to shut the door on them, in a sense. I think he wants to see how they look in 2022 before throwing a ton of money down
PutPeteRoseInTheHall
Also, as the article mentioned, not many of the top FA’s really fit the Giants mold right now. I feel Zaidi knows this and therefore won’t pursue them
scottn59c
@rb305: There’s a wide gulf between choosing not to spend big vs. choosing not to spend stupid.

I think Rodon is suspect because of his shoulder but that might allow the Giants to get in on a shorter deal. And I still hope they go for Story because Tommy LaStella is not the answer at second; he’s better suited as utility. Of course, the Giants may believe Estrada is ready for an everyday role. “Zaidi has already thrown some cold water on the idea of re-signing Kris Bryant, for instance, and if the Giants are indeed averse to $100MM+ commitments, his return would seem highly unlikely.”
Don’t forget….Bryant sucks….he’s a one and done guy….and his “one” was a while ago.
Jean Matrac
J to the P:
Yeah, after that MVP season, with the 146 OPS+, he really sucked. That 142 OPS+ the next season was like him falling off a cliff. And who would want that 132 OPS+ in 2019, or the 130 OPS+ that he had in 93 games this season before the Cubs traded him? That 132 career OPS+ is clear evidence that he’s a “one and done guy”.
differentbears
Well said, tad2b13. Bryant might not be a top tier player, but he’s not that far off. To claim otherwise is ridiculous.

Giants Unlikely To Pursue Free Agents With Nine-Figure Asking Prices
How about them Orioles? News of the North? Do they have any plans to spend Big Bucks and make a Big Splash?
48-team MLB
Let’s say, hypothetically, that the Orioles reach the World Series within the next five years but lose to the Braves.
Would Orioles fans be more upset about losing the World Series or more excited about being able to experience that stage for the first time in four decades?
48-team MLB
I’m still predicting Giants over Blue Jays this decade.
Daniella
I’d get Conforto
Metsin777
You would be surprised at how misleading Conforto’s stats are. Prepare for a mediocre defender with an above average arm that hits homeruns in games when your team is up or down by 10 runs
PutPeteRoseInTheHall
Boy am I shocked(if you can’t tell, I’m being sarcastic)
crazywarrior
i LOVE Farhan. Feels like having an ace investor/partner leading the company’s finances. I TRUST in Farhan.
The Giants have always been trendsetters, and the two year reclamation project deal is just the latest. Love our new angle
Still would love to have Byant back
Yankeesfan23
Now I want them to sign someone for $99,999,999!
48-team MLB
I’m also predicting two Yankees titles toward the end of the decade.
2027: Yankees over Brewers
2029: Yankees over Giants

and 99 cents.
Yankeesfan23
Whoa buddy those 99 cents make 10 digits!
gmenfan
Wouldn’t be shocked at all to see the Giants eat another club’s bad money deal(especially a pitcher) to help land a younger, cheaper upgrade in the outfield.
jekporkins
This is what I am thinking – Zaidi has done this a couple of times taking on a crap contract to get a player he really wants with it. The Giants have plenty of cash and a lot of other teams have plenty of bad contacts…
scottn59c
Who else did he do that with apart from the Cozart/Wilson gambit? I’m still trying to determine if the Giants got the better of that deal.
Yankee Clipper
Aaron Hicks…. He would be a superstar in SF. Trust me, just trust, and take him, please.
biffpocoroba
There won’t be any repeat of a 100+ win team this year. As fun as it was, they played above their heads, and Posey won’t be around to manage that staff this year. That’s not to say they can’t win 85-90 in 2022, assuming we have a season. But without a top-of-the-rotation starter and an everyday starting OF to bolster the offense, there is no reason to spend $100M+ on any FA at this point.
If Zaidi does anything from this point, it may be through a trade that may involve eating a contract..
claude raymond
So Biff, Wade played over his head. I’ll give you that. Dickerson, Longoria, Solano, Cueto, Yaz, Casali and others underperformed. Others played to their expectations. Belt missed crucial end to the season. 95-98 wins. Zaidi not done yet as you said.
Sal Trent
Pretty sure that Longoria has seen good seasons in his rearview mirror.. Cueto is done, Casali never had it. In fact, its a shame that Joey Bart wasn’t brought up last season to work with Posey. Too late now !!.
claude raymond
So Sal, Biff says the guys that did well played over their heads. I pointed out players who underperformed but you claim that those players essentially simply met their expectations. So, the poor hitting/pitching years the players you listed had, satisfied giants management because management said “what the hell, its what we expected”. To sum up, good years were overperformances and bad years were expected. AND, Bart essentially missed a full year of everyday ball (covid) and the needed instruction and you think he should have NOT played every day. Like 2 games a week. And Casali, who’s veteran experience guided pitchers through 5 straight shutouts “never had it”. Did Posey have to help develop Casali or was Posey able focus on his game? He’s not a coach….yet.
Sal Trent
Casali didn’t deserve to play in MLB. Even with his 5 shutouts which you give him credit for.. There was a point when he was hitting under .100 !!! Every time Casali was mentioned, it was said ” hes great with the pitching staff” Theres alot more to MLB than just getting along with teammates, ALOT MORE.
claude raymond
Getting along with teammates? Never mentioned. Bart needs a LOT of work on his defense. Doubtful their pitching would have been as good with him. Casali was great on defense. Casali probably didn’t do well in fantasy baseball which is probably why you don’t like him. I bet you kill it in fantasy baseball but defense isn’t worth anything there BTW, Bart got a long well with teammates in Sac.
claude raymond
PS Sal, I see you want Pillar on at least 2 posts. For lefties I’m guessing. .231 overall, 81 k’s and 11 walks. Against lefties, 26 ks to 2 walks. OUCH! How can your opinions of Casali be taken seriously with your high opinion of Pillar. You think people are frustrated with Zaidi now let’s see how signing pillar would sit. 26 ks to 2 walks….VERSUS LEFTIES. You do know he’s right-handed don’t you. So be prepared , Pillar won’t be a Giant.
Sal Trent
I don’t see Casali being GREAT at anything. The guy was a sub par MLP who couldn’t hit his weight, literally. Why they kept him on the team when Belt was injured early in the season is beyond me. It would have been a perfect time to bring Bart up to have Posey pl;ay 1st Base & have Bart learn from Posey. PERFECT. BTW, I don’t plat fantasy BB If Bart needs a lot of work on his defense, Casali needs 10X as much on his hitting.
Sal Trent
I know Pillar didn’t play well last season.. I’m really hoping he could still play like he did when he last played with the Giants. Hoping theres still gas left in the tank.
claude raymond
You do know that Posey required 2 hours in the training room every day. First base wasn’t happening. Cmon Sal. Pillar had a bad year?? But Casali sucks. Excellent catcher. But sucks. You’re dead wrong to say Bart should have been up to play 2 games a week. They won a ton of games with Casali catching because he was catching. Remember the days when catchers were essential on defense but hitting was a bonus when they hit. Casali had a lot to do with winning 107.
Sal Trent
Bart would have played almost every day while Belt was injured & Posey filled in at 1st bast. When Belt finally did come back, Bart still would have gotten playing time because Posey couldn’t catch more than w2 days in a row! “They won a ton of games with Casali catching” ? Thats hysterical Was it because of his great hitting (.210) or superior defense???? Again, it’s said that he had great rapport with his pitchers!! LOL–you say that when theres nothing else to say. I don’t remember the days you speak of when a catcher wasn’t known to be a hitter.. Must have been before my time & I’ve been a fan since 1961 !!!!!!!!!
sleepyfloyd
You do a lot of hoping Trent. And last year the giants caught lighting in a bottle but that won’t happen quite to that level again. Plus not having posey really diminishes the ability to craft a staff on the flat. Got away with it once.
lumber and lighting
Webb looks like a very good pitcher and he has ice ruining through his veins.I’m a lifelong Dodger and Angels fan.I loved the pennant race last yr with SF,SD,& LA.SF coming from nowhere to win a 100 is fabulous for baseball.NL west was fun and Farhan probably has more tricks up his sleeve for this yr.SD,SF and LA is going to be must watch all yr!
Yankee Clipper
Yeah, he looked really capable. But, Dodgers and Angels? Unique.
foppert
He has spent some money on coaches. Rather than being cheap or lacking confidence, maybe he just believes that taking mid level talent and/or high level unfulfilled potential and coaching it to a higher level is the better option. I imagine those type of players are pretty hungry and will want to use that system.
No problem here. The long contract has tended to be a disappointing and frustrating experience for this fan. One more of them to go in my mind. Happy to get that to zero and commit to something different. Initial results are promising. 🙂
Yankee Clipper
I believe we will see this as the new M.O. for large-market teams. Shorter, high AAV deals, or rosters full of decent players under team control (however that looks under the new CBA) and a few stars long-term.
Anyway, Yankees are trying to do this but I don’t think they’re capable of the short-term, high AAV deals because they condemn themselves by looking at the bottom line year-by-year, which is the antithetical management approach. Zaidi is smart and will continue to succeed.
Ernie Riles
Farhan goes cheap, gets RH bats Harrison (platoon 2B takes Solano’s job) and Pham (takes Dickerson LF at bats) plus lefty starters Smyly and Boyd. Hope for Ramos to emerge for mid season call up. Trade for bat or arm at deadline. Holes are filled, they win 88 games and get a wild card berth.
lumber and lighting
Btw,how many major market teams don’t have players with 100 million contracts? If I’m a Giants fan I would be upset. But being a Dodger fan I realize if SF doesn’t ever have a huge anchor contract they can spend big on expiring contracts if the winning at the trade deadline.Kinda genius to only spend when your in playoff contention and very disciplined path
Yankee Clipper
Yankees don’t.
dodgerblue1
Northern California Dodger fan here. I know many giants fans that hated on Zaidi a lot since he took over the Giants. Many of those giants fans I know are to proud to admit it and give credit where it’s due. The system in LA works
Brad Scott
The Giants need at least one more good starting pitcher, a quality offensive/defensive left fielder (they should spend the $ for Castellanos), and an outstanding defensive backup middle infielder (Panik is perfect for that role & wouldn’t be expensive). They’d be smart to sign free agent pitchers Cueto & Greinke, both of whom are underappreciated & undervalued, provide lots of quality innings, and have invaluable intangibles including experience & leadership. Of course no one replaces Posey, & I expect the team to win at least 20 fewer games without him.
Samuel
“The Giants need………a quality offensive/defensive left fielder (they should spend the $ for Castellanos)….”
@ Brad S.;
That was LOL funny!
Castellanos and J.D. Davis are neck-and-neck as the worst defensive players in MLB. No one else comes close.
Castellanos benefited greatly by playing in that bandbox ballpark in Cincinnati. His power numbers went up substantially, and he had far less territory to cover in RF, although every ball hit in his direction was an adventure. It would be comical to watch Castellanos try to play any OF position in Oracle Park, but Mr. Zaidi and his staff didn’t get where they are by hallucinating.
Rsox
Giants aren’t bringing Cueto back. Grienke is interesting though and probably could be had on a similar deal as Verlander (though for Grienke the second year might need to be guaranteed).
Sal Trent
I was not impressed with Tommy LaStella. Estrada makes a fine utility man, infield or outfield.. He should have been kept on the team instead of Dickerson, who did nothing. Also, we had another fine utility man (forgot his name) who tore up Sacramento when he was optioned there. He hit around ..340 with increased HRs, SBs & less SO.
So. Cal. Giants fan
I completely agree with your assessment. But what do I know as it’s easy for me to sit back and play GM on my couch. I think where us loyal fans are confused and frustrated is the end of year media interview with Mr. Zaidi where he basically said he was granted permission to spend big money in the off-season and beyond the luxury tax if necessary. Of course the fan base believed we’d be in on Gausman, Bryant, and Sherzer. An article likes this makes us scratch our heads.
rb305
Are you suggesting the Giants bring back Cueto and Joe Panik or are you trolling?
Yep it is
Hope Zaidi realized the Dodgers haven’t won since 1988 and nothing since Friedman took over and please don’t start with the “2020 Sham” talks. 40% of games played. Spare me your garbage on that topic.
ceol.mor
All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth… And Seiya Suzuki to sign with the Giants!

The battery chuckers won’t be nearly as lucky avoiding injuries next season. Farhan would be wise to buy reinforcements.

Giant fans, this might be one of the biggest win deferentials in history. From 106 to 78-81 tops. The rebuild will continue as planned.

actually, I think he meant to say 106 and was talking about the Dodgers

When Boras calls, let him leave voice messages.
Sal Trent
The Giants have plenty of money to spend this off season but are sitting on their hands again. If Farhan Zaidi thinks he will pluck a 1st place team out of thin air AGAIN like last season, hes wrong.. Spend the money on Castellanos & lets get going. Not much out there for our pitching staff, it will suffer unless we get lucky with a AAA starter.. We definitely need a HR hitter & Castellanos is the man.
scottn59c
Castellanos’ defense is a huge burden, especially in the spacious Oracle Park. He wants too much money and would be better off in a bandbox somewhere where he can mostly just DH.
Duggar is where the Giants need an upgrade. He should not be the starting CF in 2022, and I doubt he will be. But if you lose Duggar’s glove, it can’t be a bat-only guy. The OF is already a bit suspect with Yaz/Slater/Ruf.
Sal Trent
Duggar is an excellent CF & his bat is coming around. Castellanos plays 3rd Base besides the corner OF positions.. We nee4d his bat more than a glove.. I do like Kevin Pillar as long as they are not asking too much.
sleepyfloyd
Lol Dugger is “coming around”…… the dude is freakin 28 years old. He’s a backup OF at best and will retire as such.
Sal Trent
I agree to a point but 28 isn’t that old & he just began to play full time last season.. Hes excellent defensively has plenty of speed & I hope to see him break out offensively this season. If he doesn’t, I’ll hold the rope.
sleepyfloyd
You do realize baseball is full of 28 yr olds the are close to retiring and being out the game completely? Also look at Yaz, he had a breakout year at 28-29 but will never be that good again. He’s regressed and will continue to regress.
Sal Trent
Its hard to predict how a player will perform next season. I’m not a great fan of Yaz but I can say he gives his all, plays a good defense in the OF & will give you a HR here or there. Not an All Star but decent. I look for Duggar to pick up his offense & if he does, we have a better-than-decent player.. Let the chips fall where they may.
Sal Trent
Yaz & Slater are fne OFers
Rsox
The Giants haven’t had a true Home Run hitter since Bonds.
Castellanos would have to move to LF in SF because he would be a nightmare in RF. Offensively, the dimensions down the line’s at Oracle Park are not that drastically different than Comerica Park so Castellanos would be fine hitting there.
Farhan has said no nine figure contracts so that most certainly takes Castellanos out of the Giants price range. Any additional OF help would likely be in the Eddie Rosario/Joc Pederson/Kevin Pillar/Andrew McCutchen type
sleepyfloyd
Typical moronic giants fan- “we have this amazing farm of future stars! They are hitting the cover off the ball in rookie and A ball. The next future homegrown stars!”
Two years later – “why are these guys not hitting in AAA? They were so good in A ball?!?”
andyhighroller
Bryant should only get somewhere in the Hunter Pence 5yrs/$90m(who was coming off a stronger season than Bryant is) to Jon Lester’s 5yrs/$144m, but he’s not one of these $200m-$300m guys. If he was 2 years young or his batting average was closer to .300, maybe, but he seems like a lock for .270/25HR and tbh, you can find that for less than $100m.
Seiya Suzuki might get around half a $100m, and even when you knock back his numbers for being in the NPL, his projections still put out around .275+/20HR+, with stellar defense.
While I was on board for Seager/Correa to play 3B(or even Craw at 3B for the rest of his deal), the Giants still have a ton of opportunities for trades and don’t need to make deals that don’t favor their plan. They didn’t spend big last off-season, and won 107 games. They haven’t lost much from that team, and if the DH is taking over the NL, even if we start Casali at C, Casali is still a better hitter than our pitchers, and having a Ruf/Wade platoon can squeak out some Posey-esque numbers. Or if you move Longo, than Seager/Correa could directly replace Posey’s numbers, Ruf/Wade effectively replaces/upgrades Longo’s AB’s, and the weakest hitting catcher is still usually a better hitter than 99% of pitchers, so it’d be really hard to not have an as-good-if-not-better lineup next year, just from the DH and our luck of having a few extra high-quality bench-bats that’d now have an avenue for more playing time. I just wish Darin Ruf was 2-4yrs younger lol, but he should be more than qualified to DH/platoon DH vs LHP’s, and if his time with SF is anything to go off of, we’d have one of the more productive DH positions in the MLB.
