Red Sox Claim Jaylin Davis Off Waivers From Giants

By Anthony Franco | April 28, 2022 at 2:11pm CDT

The Red Sox have claimed outfielder Jaylin Davis off waivers from the Giants, according to announcements from both clubs. San Francisco had designated him for assignment last week. Boston had a temporary vacancy on their 40-man roster, but they’ll need to make room once Tanner Houck and Kutter Crawford are activated from the restricted list and Jonathan Araúz returns from the COVID IL. (Returning John Schreiber and Rob Refsnyder, who were selected as COVID substitutes, would clear two of three necessary openings). Davis has been optioned to Triple-A Worcester.

Davis, 27, is a righty-hitting outfielder with 26 games of big league experience. He suited up briefly at the major league level in each season from 2019-21, with 47 of his 68 plate appearances to date coming during his debut campaign. Davis only owns a .159/.221/.270 line in that limited time, but he’s been a prospect of some regard for the past few years.

Drafted by the Twins out of Appalachian State in 2015, Davis moved fairly slowly through the minors, in part owing to a shoulder injury that cost him the entirety of his post-draft summer. He reached Double-A by the end of the 2018 season and got off to an excellent start at the minors’ top two levels the following year. Minnesota dealt him to San Francisco at the 2019 deadline, and he made his MLB debut as a September call-up.

Baseball America slotted him as the #16 prospect in the Giants’ organization entering the 2020 season, praising his athleticism, arm strength and raw power. BA noted some questions about his hit tool, though, a concern also echoed by Kevin Goldstein and Tess Taruskin at FanGraphs this February. Davis has struck out in 27.9% of his plate appearances in the minor leagues, and he owns a subpar 62.6% contact rate thus far in the majors.

That said, Davis has overcome his swing-and-miss issues to post massive numbers at Triple-A. Over parts of three seasons, he’s a .293/.371/.612 hitter at the level. The Triple-A hitting environment has been very favorable in recent years, which no doubt helps, but Davis’ 38 homers in 523 plate appearances are eye-catching even in a supercharged offensive league. He’s in his final option year, so the Sox can keep him at Worcester as outfield depth for the rest of this season if he sticks on the 40-man roster.

Davis has power, but can’t hit anything but a fastball to save his life. Throw a hanging slider right down the middle and he’ll miss.

Reading the specs made me think he was a righty version of Franchy. Like that’s what the team needs…

Well, I guess it’s time to get Alex Dickerson back in the fold to see if he can regain any of his magic with Joc Pederson possibly headed to the IL. Ruff has had a rough go so far playing every day at DH/LF. Ruff would make way more sense as a platoon partner.

Jaylin has played well at Sacramento. I hope he gets another shot in Boston.

I don’t see Dickerson coming back to the Giants. Besides being injured a lot, he struggled last season in SF, and this season in Atl. I think the Giants would rather re-call Ramos, if Joc goes on the IL, than keep hoping Dickerson finds that brief moment in time when he hit well. So far Gonzalez seems like an adequate replacement for Joc. Plus they should be getting Yaz back pretty soon.

it depends – ramos will be up again but he is a righty and joc is a lefty so a minor league deal on dick could make sense for depth and to use as a platoon partner

No, that’s not really a Farhan thing to do. He’s not like Sabean who will give guys multiple chances or being guys back. Unfortunately Dickerson looks done.

except – he has done that with guys like connor joe and such who were guys that flamed out in the dodgers and A’s system under him previously. It all depends if the FO sees something to work with

If Davis doesn’t get a serious major league shot this year, he should try to sign with a KBO or NPB team next winter.

I wouldn’t be surprised if those leagues are already monitoring him, I agree that he seems like a prime candidate for Asian ball if he doesn’t put it together in the majors this year.

Well, if he doesn’t know how to hit anything that isn’t a fastball as one of the commenters suggests, he has no business in Asia. Kevin Cron is a great example of that.

I honestly didn’t expect anything different. It was painfully apparent last season Shaw had nothing left, and nothing that happened in ST really changed that. I didn’t understand why they went to the lengths they did to put him on the roster to start the season.

So comes the end of 1/3 of the SFG payback for the acquisition of AJ from the Twins.
But the jury is still out on the other two as they are both still with the SFG organization.
Still think that Dyson was damaged goods when traded by the SFG and that some kind of reparations and repercussions should have been directed against the SFG by MLB.

On July 31, 2019, the Giants traded Dyson to the Minnesota Twins in exchange for Jaylin Davis, Prelander Berroa, and Kai-Wei Teng.[14] Dyson underwent surgery to repair a torn capsule in his right shoulder at the end of the 2019 season.[15] Dyson elected free agency following the 2019 season.

On March 5, 2021, Dyson, a free agent at the time, was suspended for the entirety of the 2021 season after violating the off-the-field personal conduct policy, regarding a domestic violence case stemming back in 2019.

Please, not another nonsensical conspiracy theory.

It’s not at all unusual for pitchers to get injured. That it happened to Dyson as much 6 weeks after the trade, is just bad luck for the Twins. He made 12 appearances for them.

Typical of any trade, the Giants provided medicals, and the Twins would have given him a physical before the trade was official. If Dyson was damaged goods, it was well hidden from both teams.

If every team that traded away a guy that later was injured was slapped with reparations, it would be pure chaos. Had the Giants actually done something unethical, the evidence would be there, and they would have been penalized.

His high .300s ISOs at AAA as a 24yo are very impressive, regardless of hitting environment.

The Sox obvious AAA call ups (Casas, Duran) or outside chance types (Cordero, Fitzgerald) are all left handed. There’s a reason they’re just forcing Arroyo into time in RF. There is no obvious candidate in the system to spell JBJ against lefties.

Tell me again why a roster that had (with Shaw) 9 RHB and 4 LBH would need to replace Shaw with a RHB?

Can he close out games for us? If not, then why? We should be calling up Jaren Duran or Franchie Cordero. Both are tearing it up in AAA. We don’t need anymore no names.

WTF, JBJ hitting last in a 1-0 game. Either the RedSox are tanking or Cora still has Covid! On subject, I agree this looks like the second coming of Franchy Cordero. Sox have plenty of people who deserve an opportunity, already in the system. JBJ needs to go, to make room for Jarred Duran. At least keep him on the bench until the 8th inning. I love Christian Arroyo, but he needs a home where he can play more regularly, like Pittsburgh or Cincinnati. Let’s see Ryan Fitzgerald as the utility guy. Bobby Dalbec is going to be as inconsistent as JBJ. Love him, but get him out of the way of Tristan Casas, or get rid of Travis Shaw, aka, the Mayor of Ding Dong city. If Casas can’t help with everyday play, then give Cordero another shot. Doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results is insane.

Who cares about a tool like this guy? I care about the fact that Cora sat Bogey the hottest guy in the line-up in the final game against TOR when BAL is the next opponent!!!

Who does that? Worst manager in baseball. He proves it daily. Did you notice the .191 hitting Kiki was batting fourth!!! Who does that? The worst manager in baseball!!

Did you notice we lost 1-0 on an error by the guy who shouldn’t have been playing SS today? Yes, This loss is completely on Cora. The worst manager in baseball.

For all you Cora supporters, what if it rains in Baltimore and Bogey gets yet another day off to cool off. Is that a good thing? Cora is clueless.

In 2018 during April he sat Mookie about 10 games into the season after a rainout and two open days that week. When asked about why he sat Mookie he said it was his scheduled off day. Seriously!!! It was as ridiculously stupid as sitting your best player against the team you are struggling to keep up with at the end of April with Baltimore next. No brains. No baseball acumen. Just a guy you can cry on his shoulder when things are going badly. His ONLY skill is being a bench coach/therapist for players he likes.

NOTHING CORA DOES MAKES SENSE!! FIRE CORA TODAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Red Sox need and deserve a real manager before the whole team is blown up at year end. Maybe a new GM and Manager would mean less money on guys like Arroyo, Wacha, Paxton and Hill and more money on guys like Bogey, Devers, Eovaldi and Benny.

Think how much better the outfield would be with Benny and Verdugo in the corners. It would have been a cheap move but Bloom feels a need to put HIS GUYS in place so he can take credit. Well, it’s time to take credit Bloom for the hot mess you have created!! Ship the resumes to small town markets with the patience of Jobe!! Anyone who wants to win can’t wait for a plan like yours.

Davis with his slashing batting average of .159 should fit in great with JBJ hitting .161, Dalbac .159 and Shaw .000. Another stellar pickup by Dumpster Diving Bloom. Then Bloom will jerk around Boggarts and Devers. Thank God for Baltimore to keep us out of last place.

KD17, lots of good stuff! I’m not a big Cora fan, but Bloom is turning into the main problem here. I especially agree with Bloom needing to put his guys in place, and unless John Henry wakes up to what he is doing, the stands will be empty, MLB TV won’t be taking any subscriptions from New England, and he will be shopping NESN to keep his other businesses afloat. Paying Story, and not Bogie or Raffy, is going to be the final straw.

And not having Houck in Toronto is another story. Attach him to Dalbec and Arroyo, and we should be able to get a closer that we can count on. Instead of whoever the next man up in the bullpen is.

Spit – Arroyo is not worth keeping. Houck is a good starting rotation piece for the next 5 years, and he is worth keeping. If you don’t like the fact that he is a really good pitcher, than go vaccinate yourself another three or four times. Lol, maybe the spike proteins will put you where you belong.
