Latest On Brett Gardner

By Anthony Franco | May 13, 2022 at 11:43am CDT

Brett Gardner was one of the top free agents of last winter’s class who didn’t wind up signing prior to Opening Day. That wasn’t on account of a lack of interest in the 38-year-old, as the Blue Jays touched base with Gardner’s camp during Spring Training as part of their search for a left-handed hitting outfielder.

Ken Rosenthal of the Athletic now reports that Toronto offered Gardner a $6MM contract at the time, but the 14-year MLB veteran turned it down. According to Rosenthal, Gardner also recently declined to pursue an opportunity with the Braves. After losing right fielder Eddie Rosario to late April eye surgery that figures to cost him two-to-three months, Atlanta expressed interest in Gardner but was rebuffed.

Rosenthal suggests Gardner would likely only continue his playing career with the Yankees, the lone organization for which he’s suited up. A third-round pick by New York in 2005, the College of Charleston product first reached the majors midway through the 2008 campaign. By 2010, he’d cemented himself as a regular and wound up spending more than a decade in pinstripes. Gardner hit .256/.342/.398 in a bit more than 6600 plate appearances over that stretch, and for the majority of his career, he was one of the game’s preeminent defensive left fielders. Gardner claimed a Gold Glove award in 2016 and routinely drew excellent marks from public metrics like Defensive Runs Saved and Ultimate Zone Rating.

As recently as 2019-20, Gardner continued to produce at an above-average offensive level. That wasn’t the case in 2021, when he hit .222/.327/.362, although he still walked in an impressive 13% of his plate appearances and held his own defensively despite being unexpectedly thrust into a regular role in center field. Both FanGraphs and Baseball Reference felt Gardner was worth about a win above replacement last season, so it’s not surprising teams like the Jays and Braves were amenable to bringing him in to fill part-time roles.

That level of interest seemingly hasn’t been present on the Yankees’ part, however. General manager Brian Cashman said in Spring Training that he’d had some contact with Gardner’s reps since the end of the lockout, but added the team was “focused on what we have” internally at the time. Both Gardner and the Yankees had an opportunity to unilaterally continue their relationship into 2022 at the start of the offseason. The outfielder declined a $2.3MM player option — which isn’t too surprising given that a team like Toronto was willing to offer a greater sum — leaving the Yankees with a $7.15MM option. New York instead paid a $1.15MM buyout, essentially passing on a $6MM call on Gardner’s services.

Over the season’s first month-plus, the Yankees have had one of the game’s best outfields. New York has a .262/.345/.458 line from their outfielders, translating to offensive production 41 percentage points above the league average according to wRC+. That’s the third-best mark in the league, with only the Angels and Twins getting better production.

The bulk of that great work has come from star sluggers Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton, both of whom are off to fantastic starts. Center fielder Aaron Hicks has a robust .364 on-base percentage but has offered virtually nothing from a power perspective, while last summer’s marquee trade deadline pickup Joey Gallo has underwhelmed since landing in the Bronx. That said, the Yankees aren’t likely to seriously consider curtailing Hicks’ or Gallo’s playing time given their strong track records, so there probably wouldn’t be a path to regular reps for Gardner in the Bronx barring injury.

You know how I know you’ve never seen Gallo play? Bc you just suggested that Gallo was better than anyone. Gallo should be in triple-A until he figures out how to hit. His power means nothing when he is a black hole in the lineup.

And yet he scored 90 runs and drove in 77 last year, and this year, with that black hole in the lineup, the Yankees have the best record in baseball and they’re fifth in runs. It’s the darndest thing.

He was also good for 2 Outs Above Average in the outfield and 15 Defensive Runs Saved. Brett was good for -2 Outs Above Average and -3 Defensive Runs Saved. Gallo won a Gold Glove.

The Yankees have the best record in baseball because their starting staff has been unstoppable and because of DJ, Judge, Stanton and Rizzo contributing offensively. Gallos 4 RBI’s and 7 runs scored have absolutely nothing to do with their record. You know how I know that? Because he has 4 RBI’s and 7 runs scored while batting .190 and we are 1/5 of the way through the season. This is what Gallo looks like when you stick him on a winning team and not some last place team somewhere west of here.

People don’t forget when a player moves to a different team they’re dealing with new teammates, coaches, trainers, facilities, philosophies, culture etc.

Adjusting to all that vs. Enjoying your family becomes the question

Lol Gardner wasn’t a superstar but he has always been a solid contributor and a gamer. I still don’t understand how people fail to realize he was supposed to be the 4th outfielder who plays 50-60 games a year to rest others and play the matchups. It’s not his fault the ENTIRE Yankees outfield was made of glass and he wound up playing full time bc Hicks saw his shadow 3 years in a row and ran to the IL and Stanton/Judge couldn’t stay off the IL.

Yankees would be dead in the water without Gardner the last 3 years. Tell me the 4th outfielder over that timespan who could’ve done what Gardner did? Still waiting for someone to back up that claim.

You only need so much money. He wants to only wear a Yankee uniform. You have to respect that for any player and team. He’s effectively retired since it would require some catastrophic injury and take him a month just get up to game speed.

Brett hasn’t stolen a lot of bases lately. Since 2019 he’s stolen a total of 17, including only four last year. Andrew Velazquez stole as many, and he played in only 28 games. Gallo’s BB% as a Yankee last year was 16.2%. Brett’s was 13.0%.

Sure he does those things, but his overall value is still low. He isn’t a great fielder, he’s fast, but not like he used to be, (he’s NOT offering noticeable value as a base stealer, no front office is counting on that) and he get on base at a league average level. I still say six million is steep for a fourth OFr

Gardner has said for years he doesn’t care about money, for the most part. He’s often taken under market value deals just to be a Yankee and he’s said that pretty early on in his career he was paid enough that he’d never have to worry about money again, so I think now he’s going on principles of what his production is worth in his industry- and that he wants to be a Yankee Lifer.

I do wish they’d met in the middle on a one year deal for around $4.725M. I think Gardy could’ve given them what Locastro is giving them and he could spell guys like Gallo and Hicks and produce at his regular clip and have had plus value.

I could see them getting really worried about Gallo and Hicks and flipping one of them or releasing one of them and then signing Gardner to a pro-rated deal worth like $2.5M for the rest of the season…but that’s still unlikely.

Why would they trade either Gallo or Hicks to sign Gardy? They’re both healthy and can play defense. There are no guarantees with Gardner at his age and missing a good portion of the season. Trading Hicks will also require eating some salary. Also the LTT implications of a new signing. They might have as well signed Gardy to a $8M deal during ST. Makes no sense unless either get hurts and Locastro is on the shelf.

This is Gallo’s stat line in the last 15 days in 19 AB: .316/.409/.474/.883

He’s got a better arm than Brett’s, and even with the strikeouts, pitchers are careful about his power (only 37.8% of pitches are in the strike zone). There are other players I’d gladly swap out Gallo for, but Brett’s not one of them. Not yet, anyway. Not while Gallo’s showing signs of improvement at the plate. The chemistry on the club is working.

Can’t cherry pick a string of 19 AB’s to sum up who Gallo is or in that matter you cant use that to sum up any player in baseball.

Gallo is in his prime and is still a sack of crap. At least Gardner can blame old age. I honestly doubt Gallo is even in the MLB in 3 years. At best he’s in spring training playing for a roster spot. There is a reason the Yankees traded nothing of value for Gallo….and it’s bc he is a sack of crap.

With that strikeout rate, I don’t doubt he’ll be out of the majors soon too

Well, should we use Gallo’s last full season then?

In 2019 he hit 38 HR, scored 90 runs, drove in 77 runs, walked 111 times, stole 6 bases, had an .808 OPS, a 121 OPS+, 4.4 fWAR, 4.7 bWAR and won a Gold Glove.

That was a sample of 498 at-bats in 153 games.

Correction: That was 2021, his last full season, not 2019

BTW, I’m not cherry picking 19 AB to sum up who Gallo is. I’m showing how he’s trending. His updated stats tonight show him with this stat line and two home runs in 25 AB:

        .320/.414/.560/.974

If the team were struggling, I’d be more worried about Gallo. Right now, I have the luxury of hoping he’s starting to turn it up a notch.

Gardner waits in front of the window with his phone in his hand like a sad little puppy waiting for Cashman to call

A sad little puppy who got paid $1.15M this year and a total of $82,358,962 in his career. You should be so sad.

I was impressed with his defense and his relentless approach at the plate. He would grind out 10+ pitch AB’s like it was nothing. I know that doesn’t show up in WAR or in the box score but has tremendous value.

Long career at one team is a special membership. Bravo to Gardner for not selling out of it.

Relax. Best MLB record. He’s healthy and plays D well. Plenty of time until the trade deadline.

        I can’t wait until he’s gone lol

It’s really his aloof, nonchalant attitude that bothers me the most.

In 2021,Gardner made more contact with the roof of the dugout than he did with baseballs. A great Yankee who was part of the 2009 WS team. That’s a long time ago. Yankees needed to move on.

Gardner would be better in the Red Sox outfield. He can also aim for the Pesky pole too!

He might be old fart, but he showed up everyday to play. One of first out dugout to back/or have the back of one of his teammates.

He turned down Jay’s and Braves cause he’s loyal to Yankees no matter what. He has been there through thick and thin. Love to have him in Atlanta for his fiery attitude. Braves need it in dugout and clubhouse.

Nothing matters so long as Cashman continues to put Aroldis Chapman in high level situations. Any good this team does will be undone by another AC walk off.
