Latest On Royals’ Trade Candidates

By Mark Polishuk | July 17, 2022 at 11:17pm CDT

The Royals are one of the relatively few teams who look like clear-cut sellers heading into the trade deadline, and there has already been buzz about several of their veteran players.  Two new teams have joined the mix, as the New York Post’s Jon Heyman reports that the Dodgers have shown some interest in Whit Merrifield, while the Brewers are among the teams considering Andrew Benintendi.

Such clubs as the Padres and Mets have already been linked to Benintendi in trade rumors, though his non-vaccinated status has apparently removed such suitors as the Blue Jays and Yankees from his market — Benintendi wouldn’t be able to play in Canada altogether, while the Yankees wouldn’t want Benintendi unavailable for remaining regular-season games or potential postseason games in Toronto.

That is less of an obstacle for NL teams like the Brewers, since if Milwaukee eventually had to worry about Benintendi’s status for a potential World Series matchup against the Jays, that would count as a nice problem to have for a team battling for the NL Central lead.  The Brew Crew heads into the All-Star break with a narrow half-game lead over the Cardinals, but the Brewers are only 18-24 since the start of June.

An inconsistent offense has plagued Milwaukee, and Benintendi’s strong bat (127 wRC+) would certainly help in that regard.  A regular center fielder would probably be a better fit considering that Christian Yelich and Andrew McCutchen are already splitting left field duty, but Benintendi could get the bulk of time in left, while Yelich and McCutchen are rested, used at DH, or McCutchen could also play right field.

Merrifield has long been mentioned as a trade chip, yet while the Royals have resisted overtures in the past, they are reportedly now more open to considering a deal.  Of course, Merrfield’s trade value has also tumbled, as the 33-year-old is in the midst of the worst of his seven MLB seasons, hitting .240/.292/.343 over his first 373 plate appearances.

With Los Angeles, Merrifield likely wouldn’t be asked to adopt an everyday role, but rather be toggled around the diamond in a utility role.  Since Chris Taylor is on the injured list, Merrifield would more or less take Taylor’s role as an option at second base and all three outfield positions.  The Dodgers could also primarily use Merrifield against only left-handed pitching, though his splits against all pitchers have been underwhelming over the last two seasons.

Merrifield is also controlled through at least the 2023 season, as his contract (which was reworked back in April) calls for a $6.75MM salary next year, as he has already hit his health-based escalator clause.  He is also owed roughly $2.7MM in salary for 2022, and there is a $500K buyout of an $18MM mutual option for 2024.  Even though payroll or luxury-tax concerns aren’t a big obstacle for the Dodgers, it is possible that the Royals might be willing to kick in some money to cover Merrifield’s contract, as a reflection of his struggles this year.

Isn’t Lux better than Merrifield at this point? Seems like the Dodgers should try to get a new closer, unless they plan on using Buehler in that role in the playoffs

Lux is indeed better, but also gets shielded from a lot of lefties. He probably should get more chances vs both sides for the next couple of months.

Platoon doesn’t seem worth it if you already have a good utility player. Considering the vaccine isn’t 100% effective you don’t need the additional risk of an unvaccinated player walking around the clubhouse riddled with the new variant could overwhelm one of your more useful players.

What would be the risk of a vaccinated player walking around the clubhouse with a new variant?

Agreed Dodger Dog. Lux hits lefties better than most. Dodgers don’t need another infielder but they could definitely use more relief help.

Merrifield would be behind Lux on the depth chart at 2B. If they picked him up it would be to play Lux more at 2B and less in the OF.

Pretty much the entire back end of the bullpen needs reconstruction at this point, but giving up on Kimbrel does not seem to be an option they are considering. No chance Buehler gets used as a closer. When he gets healthy he starts. Dustin May, more likely.

The Dodgers have not done too well trading for 30+ year old second baseman the last decade.

Royals need to focus on trading their starting outfielders asap. Olivares deserve a starting job (and Isbel to a lesser extent). Room also needs to be cleared for Pratto. Any offer for Dozier should be immediately accepted (if that somehow happens).

Dayton is pissed that Whit won’t take the jab unless he’s on a contender.
Dodgers are probably looking at his BABIP being 20% of his career average and thinking he might bounce back. Exit velocity is still there

Merrifield can’t! Can’t field, can’t throw — and not a guy you want in the Dodgers clubhouse. I wouldn’t take him if the Royals gave him to the Dodgers and paid every cent of his contract. Go get Brandon Drury from the Reds!

Pitching. Any contender need a 4th or 5th? Greinke has been relatively healthy (14 starts) and discarding 4 lousy road starts, a really good era.

What’s missing from his resume? World Series Champion. He wants it. And if offered, he’ll go and with KC’s blessings.

I also see him continuing with one year contracts for the remainder of his career (I don’t see him retiring soon) and always with KC. And each year, around trade deadline, if a playoff team wants him, he’ll go and with KCs blessing.

Why would KC do this? Greinke puts fannys in seats and when he’s making that HOF speech in Cooperstown he will be wearing a KC hat, sure thing. And just maybe sooner than later, KC makes a run and he’s contributes to it. Also, if he does get traded, maybe KC gets a mid to lower level prospect in return …maybe.

For a 5th starter, 4 bad outings out of 14 isn’t bad. Road starts at that. There are ways to make it so nearly all of his starts are at home too. Especially for teams who already do bullpen games like, for example, Milwaukee. I’m not saying we should trade for him, just that there are other managers besides Counsell who do it.

@ohyeadam; this isn’t Moore and Picollos’s first rodeo. I chuckled when I read the Greinke being traded story. The more often you say no trade, the better prospect(s) offered in that last 24th hr when the one desperate GM calls.

@forwhomartbelltolled; absolutely a different cat. Personally, I love the guy. A winner who has his social/emotional piccadillys … and which can show up during a game. In no way being demeaning here, but my favorite nervous tic of his is when he yells to the catcher what he’s gonna throw while the batter is in the box. Refreshing, ENTERTAINING!

Severe anxiety brought on by a social (or personality) disorder, which seems to be well documented as part of Zach’s life journey, is no laughing matter. Kudos to the KC folks back in the day that were there to offer him help. And kudos to Zach for taking them up on it.

To your point, yep, he may be content to stay right there in KC for the rest of his career. I hope not. I’d like to see him get another shot at being a world champion.

If the Dodgers want Merrifield it will take:
    Ryan Pepiot/Jose Ramos

If the Brewers want Benintendi it will take:
    Joey Weimer/Taylor Floyd/Cam Robinson

If the Mets want Benintendi it will take:
    Ronny Mauricio/Robert Dominguez/Mike Vasil

A new organization for Merrifield might be exactly what he needs to get his season back on track. He’s only 33 so it’s unlikely that he has ‘lost it’ entirely. If a team acquires him, I could see him using that as extra motivation to increase his production; things have gotten stale for Whit in KC. I’m not saying he has quit on the Royals; he just needs a jumpstart and a new team that is in the playoff race might be the catalyst he needs.

Only 33? That’s well past the age of decline. Fans really have a warped idea of when players decline. 33 is generally old for baseball and most players are well past their prime and in steep decline by then. Every reason to believe he’s not ever going to be particularly good anymore.

Completely agree that Benintendi and Merrifield should be (or already should have been) traded.

Others that should be on the block from KC are Michael A Taylor, Hunter Dozier, Cam Gallagher, Scott Barlow, Brad Keller and of course Ryan O’Hearn. None of those guys will be of value when KC is next competitive and perhaps they could get some young prospects that evolve more in line with the current pipeline.

If the Brewers somehow got Benintendi, they would be best served by parking him in left. McCutchen is the fastest player on the team and is still in great shape for playing center with Taylor/Davis providing relief as needed. As for Yelich, he’d be primary DH. If matchups are favorable, put him at LF and slide Benintendi to CF here and there.
