Ken Giles Elects Free Agency

By Darragh McDonald | August 14, 2022 at 10:55pm CDT

The Mariners announced that reliever Ken Giles has declined an outright assignment and elected free agency. Giles was designated for assignment on Friday and this announcement indicates he has passed through waivers unclaimed.  According to Ben Nicholson-Smith at Sportsnet.ca, Giles asked for his release from the Mariners.  As a veteran with over five years of MLB service time, Giles has the right to reject an outright assignment without forfeiting any salary.

Giles, now 31, underwent Tommy John surgery in October of 2020. The Mariners later signed him to a two-year deal, knowing that he would miss the entirety of the 2021 campaign, but hoping for a payoff in 2022. Giles made $1.5MM last year and is making $5MM this season. (There was also a club option for 2023, which now seems to be a moot point.) Unfortunately, things haven’t gone according to that long-term plan, with Giles missing much of this season due to other injuries. Though it was hoped he’d be ready for Opening Day, a finger injury in Spring Training kept him from making his Mariner debut until June 21. After five appearances with diminished velocity, a shoulder issue sent him back to the IL yet again. He was rehabbing from that issue when the M’s designated him for assignment.

Giles will now head back to the open market and try to find his next opportunity. Prior to his current run of injury woes, he was one of the better relievers in all of baseball. He was last healthy for an extended period of time in 2019 with the Blue Jays, throwing 53 innings with a 1.87 ERA, 39.9% strikeout rate, 8.2% walk rate and 39.3% ground ball rate.

Given the chance to claim Giles off waivers and take on the roughly $1.4MM owed to him for the remainder of the season – as well as a $500K buyout on his $9.5MM club option for 2023 – the remaining 29 teams passed.  Now, any team can sign Giles and pay him the prorated league minimum for any time spent on the roster, with that amount being subtracted from what Seattle pays. That will make him an interesting wild card in the baseball world until he signs. On the one hand, he’s now three years removed from his last signs of effectiveness and has dealt with various ailments since. But on the other hand, with the trade deadline now gone, teams desiring bullpen upgrades have very limited options for doing so. Given Giles’ past success and no-risk acquisition cost, teams could consider him worth a dice roll.

The Mariners also announced that catcher Luis Torrens cleared waivers and was outright to Triple-A Tacoma. His situation is slightly different from Giles, given that he has just over three years of MLB service time. Players between three and five years can reject an outright assignment and elect free agency, though they have to forfeit their remaining salary. Torrens qualified for arbitration this past offseason as a Super Two player and is making a $1.2MM salary this year. With approximately $340K remaining to be paid out this year, no team deemed him worthy of a claim. Though the Mariners didn’t announce if he accepted the assignment, it seems fair to assume that he has, given that the club announced Giles’ rejection and the money Torrens would leave on the table by walking away. Torrens isn’t rated very highly for his defense but provided strong offense last year, hitting 15 home runs and slashing .243/.299/.431, wRC+ of 101. He’s been far worse this year, however, adding just a single long ball and producing a batting line of .214/.262/.252, wRC+ of 52.

Twins have the higher waiver priority so if both teams made a claim on him twins would get him. Dodgers have the lowest waiver priority so they’d be last in line for a claim on Any player unless there the only ones making a claim.

No one claimed him which is why he is currently a free agent.

also I think it goes by league first so all AL teams get first shot and if no AL team claims him then NL teams have a chance.

Perfect “(inster any team) should pick him up” kind of guy

And when I say that, I mean the Pittsburgh Pirates should snag him on a low-risk deal. Right now, David Bednar is out and so is Yerry De Los Santos, two guys who they’ve heavily relied on this summer. There’s no risk in trying out a veteran who has a ton of experience in high-leverage.

I would be very surprised to see the Pirates get Giles. If Giles is well enough to come back at some point this season I believe he would choose a team that is a contender so that it would be possible for him if healthy and throwing well to have a chance at post season.

Post season is what players dream about and rarely does a player this late in the season with his resume have a chance to choose their destination. For the league min. prorated a contender will gamble if he is healthy

Sad to see him go but with how well the Seattle bullpen has been pitching this year there wasn’t enough room for Giles.

Let’s all remember regular season stats mean nothing in post season. With 3 wild card teams per league you will figure that some teams will come in playing hot baseball and knock a division winner out.

Remember why they switched from only one wild card team to two teams?? As the wild card teams were the hottest and we’re winning too many pennants and World Series.

Wonder what division winner dodgers: Mets etc will be crying the blues when knocked out early

I’ll disagree with that as well. But it’s not as ridiculous as I think you think it is. Their record since firing Girardi is probably in the top 5 in the league. They have 2 aces and a dangerous lineup.

Philles do have the 4th most wins and the 4th lowest loss total since Girardi’s firing. They’re 40-21. In terms of wins since Giriardi being fired, it’s the Dodgers, Braves, Astros, Phillies, then Mets.

The dodgers have to be ahead of the Mets in your power rankings. They have way more power and a better season record.

Mets issue in post season is that they don’t have a lot of power bats so if they get behind or allow a team to stay in a game they could be destroyed by the home run ball.

The Mets have won a lot of games with weak infield hits; broken bat opposite field hits etc. that may not play well in post season.

Post season anything can happen; why a team like the Phillies had better odds to win the World Series than they did to win the division.

They have better odds because they have a 0 chance to win the division. And the Mets get cheap hits bc they don’t K. When you don’t K you our the ball in play more. Braves wouldn’t know about that.

Instead of constantly striking out the Mets put the ball in play and make defenses work. They get on base and have speed and supplement with several power bats. That will play very well in the postseason.

While I agree the Dodgers are currently ahead of the Mets, this whole diatribe of lucky hits is as stale as LOL Mets. A hit is a hit. Ever think they hit the ball where the players aren’t? Ever think it’s a strategy? This isn’t one series. It’s been 115 games worth of strategic placement. Let’s also not overlook base running. Jeff McNeill literally stripped the Phillies of a run today when he darted for home because Marsh gingerly threw a ball in. It’s advantageous baseball that the team is playing because of excellent management. Buck has this team making lower end teams pay for their mistakes. Playoffs won’t change that at all. In fact it will enhance it when pressure gets the best of teams

Ken Giles will be a nice low risk pickup for any team, he has the pedigree, the fire, the heart and the talent to do it. His health is the only thing that’s been holding him back. If he can prove he’s healthy, some team could prosper from it. Worth the league minimum wage risk and the potential for more in future years.

I’m curious as to what Giles will look for in his next team, as there will no doubt be several interested in taking a flyer on him for the rest of the season. Does he (a) want to play for a playoff contender in a lower leverage role or (b) firm up a closer situation on a rebuilding team to reclaim market value in the upcoming offseason?

He would want to play for a contender so that he gets more expose and a chance at a ring.

Very few people will remember what a closer did for a last place team in August or September. Now if that same pitcher strands some runners in the 6;7;8 etc. in a play off situation that memory will be fresher and have more value

A non contender would be better able to get him into game situations. All teams will have scouts looking at his work, regardless of whether he in the playoff hunt. On a contender, they are not going to have him high on the depth chart, and he may not get chances to pitch. A rebuilding team will be more wary of over using its key bullpen members, and will spread the assignments out. Can’t be seen if you don’t get innings.

Right now, our biggest problem is the offense and our manager. Can’t or won’t do anything about the latter at this stage. The bullpen issue to me comes down to Holmes. They build toward the closer and he’s been horrible for over a month. He’s not giving them any chance to win close games. It’s definitely mechanical. It’ll snap back in, but they need to remove him as closer until he does. Yes, baseball is a weird game. Chapman is now the better option again.
