Carlos Martinez Receives 85-Game Suspension

By Steve Adams | September 1, 2022 at 9:53am CDT

Free-agent righty Carlos Martinez has been suspended 85 games under Major League Baseball’s joint domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse policy, commissioner Rob Manfred announced Thursday via press release. The suspension is retroactive to June 19 and comes on top of an 80-game PED suspension he received back in May after testing positive for Ibutamoren.

Martinez, who’ll turn 31 later this month, spent time with the Giants and Red Sox organizations early in the 2022 season but never pitched for either club in the Majors. He spent the 2013-21 seasons with the Cardinals and, from 2015-18, was one of the better young starting pitchers in the National League (3.22 ERA in 698 2/3 innings).

Martinez made a pair of All-Star teams during his time with St. Louis and signed a five-year, $51MM contract extension in Feb. 2017. Injuries derailed the majority of that contract, however, as the right-hander was limited to just 150 2/3 innings over the contract’s final three seasons.

80-game PED suspsension and an 85-game DV suspension in the same season? Dude is a walking disaster

He’s testing all of the league’s discipline policies.

I doubt this dude will ever pitch in MLB again.

Looks like he is doing well for himself. . Maybe he and Ozuna can go and create a wife beater baseball team in another country. Add Tatis Jr to this team. They can all share steroid needles, get drunk, and when they pitch a scoreless inning or hit a Homerun they beat their wives and say it’s okay, because they are professional baseball players. What a pack of losers.

It was only the last two years (the first one being the shortened 2020 season) that Martinez sucked while with the Cardinals. Before then, he always pitched well as either a starter or reliever.

Do the suspensions run concurrent or consecutive?

If concurrent he could still try to latch on somewhere and be able to return early next season, if consecutive than he wouldn’t be available til mid-season at the earliest. Either way we have probably seen the last of him

How is a PED suspension 80 games and domestic violence 85 games.

Both are serious, but domestic violence should be treated far more serious as it involves harming another person.

Also, you don’t take his previous suspension into consideration and increase the severity of the new suspension?

Trevor Bauer got 2 years for being a general d-bag. The “domestic violence” part has basically been thrown out thanks to the “victim’s” own text messages. Personal depravity shared between two consenting adults doest= domestic violence

If Bauer wasn’t one of Manfred’s bigger, more vocal critics i wonder if his punishment would be different

MLB doesn’t want a misogynist incel type being one of the faces of baseball while trying to attract more women and younger fans.

What Bauer did was a violation of the league’s joint DVCA policy, even if L. H. consented to it.

And last time I checked, being a d-bag wasn’t against the rules.

It’s OK to mention that baseball groupie Lindsey Hill put a lot of very detailed information about what she likes in writing.

Lindsey had access to Padres ownership as her dad Coach Rich Hill was at USD and Ron Fowler had ties to the program.

Lindsey Hill worked for the Padres and had relations with a minimum of two Padres players, one of which had a newborn child.

          She’s a soulless money grubber.

PEDs are a set in stone amount of days for suspensions.

Since the DV/CA/etc. policy is more brought in what it covers….it can vary depending on the severity of each case.

Each Case also generally involves a discussion with the Players Union as well to come to an agreement on the severity of a punishment.

So I guess he can still be caught illegally doctoring a baseball, but how is he supposed to get caught using an illegal bat when pitchers aside from rare guys like Ohtani don’t hit anymore?

(I would include getting caught gambling, but that a bannable offense and so doesn’t technically carry a “suspension” as punishment.)
