Tigers Release Michael Pineda

By Darragh McDonald | September 7, 2022 at 12:50pm CDT

Sep. 7: The Tigers announced that Pineda has cleared waivers and been granted his release.

Sep. 4: The Tigers have designated right-hander Michael Pineda for assignment, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic was among those to report. His roster spot will go to reliever Luis Castillo.

Pineda, 33, is a veteran who made his MLB debut with the Mariners back in 2011 and has since pitched for the Yankees and Twins. He joined the Tigers for this season on a one-year deal that came with a $5.5MM guarantee as well as incentives based on innings pitched.

At the time, it was surely hoped that Pineda could be a reliable veteran presence in a rotation that featured a lot of talented but inexperienced youngsters. In the end, just about every pitcher who started a game for the Tigers spent some time on the injured list this year, with Pineda being no exception. He went to the IL in May due to a right middle finger fracture, costing him about six weeks. In late July, he returned to the IL due to right triceps tightness, which kept him away for another five weeks.

Between those IL stints, he’s only been able to make 11 starts and throw 46 2/3 innings. He also hasn’t been able to be very effective, with his 5.79 ERA almost a full run above his previous career high of 4.82. His 13% strikeout rate is easily the worst of his career, though his control is still present, with his 4% walk rate about half of the league average for starters.

The Tigers are well out of contention and will use the final weeks of the season to audition youngsters for roles on future teams. “I hate it for Michael,” manager A.J. Hinch tells Stavenhagen. “Nothing worse than telling a veteran of his magnitude and his career that we’re moving on from him. But for us, it’s time to take a look at the guys who have a better chance of being here.”

There might also be a financial reason for the move, as Pineda was about to start hitting the incentives in his contract. He would have received $375K for hitting each of the 50, 75, 100, and 125 inning benchmarks, and he would receive an additional $500K for tossing 150 and 175 innings. Since he’s currently at 46 2/3 frames on the year, he likely would have earned himself an extra $375K in his next start. Instead, he will be put on waivers in the coming days, likely clearing waivers given the approximately $800K remaining on his deal. Assuming he does clear, he would be able to reject an outright assignment in favor of electing free agency, by virtue of having more than five years of MLB service time.

I’m glad I saw this, because he’d been on my fantasy team for a few days before this happened.

Why though? Are you in last place? You must have literally no pitching if you’re relying on this guy for any points whatsoever.

Damn don’t you guys pick up 2 starts every week with your last couple bench spots? I’m in 1st in my league and I have had some absolute scrubs on my roster at different points throughout the year.

Why on earth did you have Pineda on your fantasy team?? 2-7 with an ERA of 5.79. Currently owned in 1.6 percent of ESPN fantasy leagues.

No. The younger players they are auditioning for next year will pitch much better than Pineda has pitched this year.

It wasn’t intentional. I had a variety of SP on my team, and I was kinda stuck getting him because I had other players, and he was one of the few players I found.

He had one blow up in July, then a short outing and went on the IL. Missed the month of August and he just hasn’t been the same. He was fine thru mid-July. Once he gets healthy he should be good to go for 2023. I remember seeing him as a rookie in Seattle, he’s a BIG dude.

So you’re going to blame Al Avila for Pineda breaking his hand on a line drive, plus having one bad outing to blow up his ERA a couple of runs? Smooth Move ex lax!

Next thing, you’ll blame Avila for the price of gas, then climate change.

Why not? They make about the sense as the other.

htrab- defending a single move doesn’t make someone an “Avila apologist.” The best GMs sometimes make awful moves and awful GMs sometimes make great moves and then there are moves that simply don’t work out for a variety of reasons. If Pineda stayed healthy, maybe he would have had a good season. No one knows. But it was a flier worth taking and opinions only charged because hindsight is 20/20.

It’s true, Michael Pineda is another Al Avila failure. In truth, I thought Pineda was a good acquisition and likely would’ve been if not for all the other pitchers landing on the IL.

Pineda $5.5M off the books for 2023, pending off season moves
    Fulmer gone, – $4.95M
    Grossman out, -$5.0 M

    That’s $15.45M so far

    Free agents to come
    Barnhart -$7.5M
    Peralta 2.5M
    another 10 million

Maybe non tender Candelario, some others.

Jeimer Candelario went from a good player last season to no longer MLB caliber.

I don’t see how the Tigers NOT start all over and rebuild again. They have to shed salary again and try to dump Javy Baez and Eduardo Rodriguez Al one with Miguel Cabrera after 2023. Al Avila ruined the team for the next 4 years.

Isaac Paredes should have been playing 3B for the Tigers this year(another “seeing eye trade” by Al Avila.

Paredes stats in ’22 would lead the Tigers if he still played here:
    2022
    WAR
    2..9 AB 261 H 58 HR 18 BA .222 RBI 40

Pineda could use a work out coach and a nutritionist to prolong/save his career.

There is a casual connection between injuries and being out of shape/carrying too much weight etc..

I wonder if Pineda could be groomed as a closer. I think he fits the mold control wise, pitching 20 or so pitches every few days might suit him better. Yankees never liked his attitude, but he might flourish in that role. Stranger things have happened,

This team is such a dumpster fire right now. I pray that we get a young GM that is up for this kind of challenge. At the end of last season I would’ve ranked the Tigers #2 of the Detroit sports teams. Now, after what has happened this year, it’s an easy 4th. What about you Detroit fans? If you had to rank em, what would yours be? Mine…

He should have been DFA’s awhile ago.
Tiger should be looking at their minor league starters who could help
them in the rotation in ’23’.

Signing this guy was a huge mistake like so many others from the Avila era.
