Yankees Select Jimmy Cordero

By Darragh McDonald | November 10, 2022 at 4:19pm CDT

The Yankees announced that they have added right-hander Jimmy Cordero to their 40-man roster.

Cordero, 31, logged 83 innings of MLB action across the 2018-2020 time frame, putting up a 4.55 ERA in that time. Unfortunately, he required Tommy John surgery in March of 2021, wiping out that entire season. The White Sox outrighted him at the end of that campaign.

He signed a minor league deal with the Yankees for 2022 and was able to return to the mound by June. He eventually made 32 appearances for the Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders. In 38 2/3 innings, he posted a 2.09 ERA, along with a incredible 31.8% strikeout rate and 51.7% ground ball rate.

Based on that strong showing, he’s earned his way back onto a 40-man roster. He has one option year remaining, which will allow the Yankees to use him as an optionable depth arm in 2023. He has between two and three years of MLB service time, meaning they can keep him around for years to come if he continues to hang onto that roster spot.

Why him? They need room for their Rule 5 prospects.

Because they like him and believe he can offer more value to them in 2023 than some Rule 5 prospects.

Because they have a lot of open spots right now after all the free agents they have lost off the 40 man.

He came up with the Phillies throwing around 100mph out of the bullpen. I don’t know what he does now, That was a while ago.

He had a great month in September 2019. 97 mph sinker and wipe out changer who loves to pitch on the edge, where he’s unhittable. Command and health the issues. Best of luck to him w the Ywnkees (again).

I thought Cordero would make contributions to the big league pen in 2022, but his start to the season was delayed and it took awhile to find his form. Yankees obviously liked what they saw by the end of the season. Velocity and spin are still plus.

Some of these moves have me concerned that we will, once again, see some very good arms get left unprotected for the Rule V.

Like who? They still have three open slots on the 40 man; and that ignores that Deivi and Florial are out of options, yet still are unlikely to nail a ML roster spot, so they will probably be DFAd. After today’s transactions, they do not have 5 players who are Rule V eligible who are worth protecting.

Well, you’re not considering the fact that they have 9 free agents. Yes, NINE.

So, taking that into account when you consider success of power arms like Will Warren, Randy Vazquez, Luis Gil, and several others, the Yankees desperately need room on their roster at the risk of exposing some good arms…..again.

Florial or Deivi will probably go when they make the Judge signing official – he still needs to pass a physical but he’s on vacation with his wife in Hawaii – unless the Yankees work out a 2 for 1 or 3 for 2 trade before then. the options would only come into affect if the Yankees call them up during the season and then want to send them back down and then they’d have to be DFA and would need to clear waivers.
