David Price Won’t Pitch In 2023

By Simon Hampton | December 6, 2022 at 8:02pm CDT

Veteran left-hander David Price won’t pitch in 2023, his agent Bo McKinnis told Jon Heyman of the New York Post. Price is a free agent after spending the last season with the Dodgers. A report came out during the season that Price was planning to retire at the conclusion of the 2022 campaign, but the player denied that report. Heyman notes that his agent isn’t using the retirement word here either.

Price, now 37, was drafted first overall by the Rays back in the 2007 draft, quickly making his way through the minors and pitching a handful of innings in 2008. Price would establish himself in the Rays’ rotation the following year, and spent the next five-and-a-half seasons dominating American League lineups with Tampa Bay. He’d wind up throwing 1,143 2/3 innings of 3.18 ERA ball, winning a Cy Young award in 2012, making four All Star appearances and helping the Rays make the playoffs between 2010-12.

As is often the case with smaller market teams, trade speculation swirled as the Rays record dipped below .500 and Price’s club control ran down. The Tigers swooped, landing Price in a 2014 deadline that landed the Rays Willy Adames and Drew Smyly among others. Despite joining a Tigers rotation that featured Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander, the team was swept in the ALDS by Baltimore that year.

The Tigers still controlled Price for one more year in 2015, and he started the year out in their rotation. Yet despite pitching to a 2.53 ERA in 21 starts, the Tigers fell out of contention and with his free agency pending, they flipped him to the Blue Jays for Matthew Boyd, Daniel Norris and Jairo Labourt. Price continued his excellent ways in Toronto, tossing 11 starts of 2.30 ERA ball and helping the Blue Jays through a memorable post-season that finished with defeat to the Royals in the ALCS. All told, it was an outstanding free agency platform year of 220 1/3 innings of 2.45 ERA ball and a runner up finish in AL Cy Young voting.

That winter, Price landed a monster seven-year, $217MM deal with the Red Sox. While he did throw an impressive 230 innings in his first season in Boston, the 3.99 ERA was well shy of his dominant best. After throwing 185+ innings in seven-straight seasons, injuries plagued much of the remainder of Price’s Boston career, and he’d make just eleven starts in 2017. He’d back that up with 30 starts in 2018, pitching to a 3.58 ERA as the Red Sox won the World Series, with Price throwing 13 2/3 innings of 1.98 ERA ball in the Fall Classic. Unfortunately, he’d again find himself battling injuries in 2019 as he tossed 107 1/3 innings of 4.28 ERA ball.

That’d wind up being Price’s last year in Boston, as new chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom packaged up Price and superstar Mookie Betts and sent them to the Dodgers for Alex Verdugo, Jeter Downs and Connor Wong. That trade took place not long before the pandemic forced the shut down, and eventually shortening of the 2020 season. Price would opt out of that season, instead returning in 2021 as a bullpen option for LA. He was reasonably effective in that role, pitching to a 4.03 ERA in 73 2/3 innings, but he did post a career-low strikeout rate of 17.8% and saw his velocity drop.

He rebounded in 2022, remaining in a relief role and pitching 40 1/3 innings of 2.45 ERA ball, posting vastly improved strikeout and walk rates, both of which had been trending in the wrong direction a year earlier. While it’s not necessarily the end of the road for Price, he currently boasts an impressive career record of 157-82 over 2,143 2/3 innings (322 games started out of 400 appearances) with 2,076 career strikeouts. He’s also a five-time All Star, has one World Series ring with the Red Sox in 2018 and an AL Cy Young award (as well as two runner up finishes).

Has he been as good as the brilliant guy of 2014? No, but he has been a very productive arm, pretty much every year (sans two injury years) to include this year. Price has had a legitimately brilliant career and I am impressed after two years of +4 ERAs he comes back for a 2+ ERA last year. He’s no longer a locked in starter, but the dude can still get people out.

EVERYONE downslides. MLB player don’t get better when they turn 35, but if you can keep the wheels in motion then you are far more than the self-appointed talent evaluators think of you.

As a Dodger fan, I’ll remember him for being stellar in the 2018 WS more than the very mild contributions he made as a Dodger.

But as others have alluded, he was in the twilight of his career. Some wrist issue in that last year in Boston that maybe never healed well.

Maybe we’ll find out later it was from that incident with Eck (I kid).

Downslide as a starter, sure. But as a reliever, he was very effective last year, and he’s a lefty. I’m sure he’s seeing some of these deals being handed out and wants to keep the door open for a return.

Probably giving himself some wiggle room to keep it graceful in a year or more. A lot of guys wait a year or two from their last season to formally submit their retirement papers. It takes time to sink in and not thinking might just be a long rest to reset for another run.

But Price has clearly been done for a few years.

His last full season as a starter was 2018. He took the shortened season off. He was bad in 2019 and got shipped off to the Dodgers, where he was somewhat irrelevant after skipping his first year on the Dodgers due to opting out of the shortened 2020 season, then he comes back and only starts 11 games and then the 2022 season where he was a glorified reliever to finish out that contract.

He’s been done for years. I stand by my statement.

I think you’re right from the “done mentally” part but “done physically” is maybe a bit overly harsh.

In 2019, he was the second best starter on a really mediocre Sox team before getting shut down due to injury (cyst in wrist so a non-sports injury). He sat out 2020 and then came back in 2021 as a solid but unspectacular mixed-use guy who filled in for 11 starts randomly after spending the front half as a reliever. Then he came back in 2022 as a legitimately good reliever. I’m talking 172 ERA+. Bordering on dominant for a reliever.

Again, I agree he checked out mentally after the trade to LA and came back the last two seasons to get his bag (I think he wanted to end his career in BOS). I just don’t think the stats really back up such a harsh judgement of his play over the 2019-2022 seasons.

Agreed, Price could easily be a serviceable middle reliever who gets a one year $2 million deal. But for him, that price is not right.

Price is a classy guy when it comes to the game (I don’t know most of these guys as to their personal life), he will probably announce his retirement a couple weeks before 2023 starts.

So nothing new with him then? Probably the worst FA pitching contract of all time. Not sure why someone gave him that money after the workload his arm was given the prior 2 years. Oh that’s right it was Dombrowski. Lol the guy that trades the farm and signs top FA and then says look at the winner I built. Most overrated GM/PoBOin MLB.

Maybe David Price can make that call. It’s hit choice. Not yours, not mine. And given his track record (even last years performance) he could easily get a job in the bullpen of any number of teams.

The only way someone like David Price keeps playing is if someone offers him like $20M a year to continue. Otherwise the money isn’t really worth it. Also he’s clearly burned out. He’s done. He honored the contract but like a lot of aging super stars, he stuck around to collect the last of the guaranteed paychecks rather than retire and forfeit tens of millions of dollars he’d earn simply by showing up and tossing the ball, swinging the bat, regardless of the result.

Couldn’t agree more. Price has seen pretty much all there is to see for a big league starter. Personal accomplishments…team accomplishments…even traded a few times (as both a feature piece and even as a salary dump lol).

I’ll always remember him fondly as being part of that first crop of successful Rays teams that bucked the trend and started winning with a small payroll and a “winning on the margins” style of play.

The man has earned over $200M in his career; no reason for him to ever pitch again. As a Red Sox fan, I really disliked David Price. He never really seemed to give it his all in Boston, nor did he do much for the community. After seeing what he did for the Dodgers minor leaguers during the lost Covid season my opinion of him changed. Very generous of him to help out the minor leaguers struggling to make ends meet. Plus he didn’t complain in LA when they moved him to the bullpen. He ended his career on a high note; all that’s left to do is officially retire. Congrats on a very good, lucrative career.

He never really liked Boston to start with, remember in his rays days how much he used to talk bad about the team, and, ortiz until they wound up together.

It was all about the massive contract, at first. I think he grew up as we watched in his time with the team, and, as for the city/fans, I think it slowly grew on him. Remember, the airplane episode was about him sticking up for teammates. The brass disliked it, but, the players supported him in the aftermath. That says something too.

The airplane episode was him sticking his nose where it didn’t belong. It was a loser move to confront Eck in front of the whole team. Eck was just speaking the truth, erod is a big boy and could stick up for himself.
