Padres Sign David Dahl To Minor League Deal

By Simon Hampton | December 7, 2022 at 5:04pm CDT

The Padres have signed outfielder David Dahl to a minor league deal, according to Jeff Sanders of the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Dahl, 28, spent the past season at Triple-A with the Brewers and Nationals, slashing a combined .279/.345/.442 with ten home runs in 359 plate appearances.

He was once one of the top prospects in all of baseball, rising as high as 22nd on Baseball America’s overall list prior to the 2015 campaign. Drafted tenth overall by the Rockies in 2012, he quickly rose through their ranks and had an impressive rookie season in 2016, hitting .315/.359/.500 in 237 plate appearances and lining himself up to be a mainstay of the Rockies outfield for many years to come.

He suffered a stress fracture in his rib in spring training in 2017, and developed back spasms while rehabbing that summer, leading the Rockies to shut him down for the entire year. He returned in 2018, belting 16 home runs and posting a .273/.325/.534 line. That was followed up by an even better year in 2019, as Dahl earned his first trip to the All Star game amid a season where he wound up with 15 home runs and a .302/.353/.524 line in 100 games.

Unfortunately, 2019 was his last year of above-average production, and Dahl’s offense regressed considerably in the pandemic-shortened 2020 campaign as he battled shoulder and back injuries. That year, he hit just .183/.222/.247 without a home run and was released at the end of the season. The Rangers inked him to a one-year, $2.7MM deal that winter in a bid to help him rediscover his offensive potential, but Dahl would continue his struggles, slashing .210/.247/.322 in 220 plate appearances before being released mid-season.

Dahl has spent most of his time in the big leagues in left field, where he’s logged -10 Defensive Runs Saved over his five seasons. He graded out below average in center, but was worth 3 DRS in right field in about 500 innings there over his big league career.

While Dahl is now three years removed from his last above-average season, he’ll play the 2023 season at age-29 so is still young enough that he could still find his offensive groove again with the Padres’ Triple-A affiliate, and try and find an opportunity in the big leagues if injuries strike.

Ha you clowns know that multiple teams make multiple offers to multiple players right? And when they sign w another team, it means they rejected all the other teams, not just the Padres. At least Teh Padre dont low ball players and make legit offers.

You’re a jealous fan but I get it, padre fans used to be too.

Padres never made a formal offer to Judge. He wanted to be king of New York and who can blame him. Turner wanted to play closer to home. Not a big deal. When you get to pencil in Tatis, Soto, and Machado at the top of the lineup, there isn’t a lot to complain about. I remember the days when we would go to Petco and every Padre was a nobody.
If Preller can get a decent bat and another starter or two (doesn’t have to be Rodin) I’ll be happy with the off-season.

You’re just salty you missed out on two big FAs and are trying to justify your anger and sadness

Because instead you resigned Suarez who gave up the HR to Harper to lose the NLCS

          Preller ain’t your guy

        • James Midway

Pinkie you seem like the salty one. You seem more upset that the Padres didn’t sign these two than any Padre fan. Padres will be just fine, I’m happy for Turner and Judge getting what they wanted. You being salty and wanting me to join you isn’t how I celebrate my fandom of a team. You clearly know nothing about the Padres or Padre fans. Tells me you must be a Dodger “fan”. I probably know more about the Dodgers than you do.

        • VegasatNights

@pinky your an idiot, the dodgers didn’t resign trea because they knew he wanted to live in the east closer to his wife.

I already knew pads weren’t going to get him due to his connect to the east coast. Turner loves the east and money didn’t matter to him. He would rather be happy than to get more money from another team.

In the case, I won’t want judge for 10 yrs/400 at the age of 30. How long can judge play at an above average level before the decline? Is he another pujols waiting to happen..time will tell..

I rather extend Soto for 400 million or spend it next year on ohtani than judge.

Soto? The one that hit 6 HR’’s and 236 Average the last 2 months of the season.

Rosenthal said they did. Said that both the Giants and Padres offered more than the Yankees.

I agree about not needing to make a huge splash to put a playoff team on the field. Still need another back of the rotation starter, a 1B, a DH, and then play Tatis in the OF when he returns.

Machado at 3B, Kim at SS, Cronenworth at 2B, Tatis in LF, Grisham in CF, Soto in RF, and Nola/Campy behind the plate is a great group of position players no matter who ends up at 1B or DH. Still lots of time to find those types of players and I would bet Nola and Campy pick up a good portion of those 1B and DH starts. .

What a consolation prize for the team of Host City of the Winter Meetings. Signing a guy who in his career hit less home runs than Judge hit this year.

Its a minor league deal. All teams make multiple signings like this. Has ZERO bearing on the big deals that the Padres have been in on.

Splash!!! We never had a chance on Turner, he openly said he wanted to be closer to home / East Coast. Sad that Turner was once ours but we traded him away in the Myers deal. Hopefully AJ pulls off some last minute deal and gives as all something to look forward to.

I’m good with this as a Padres fan. He can play all 3 OF spots, and based on his minor league numbers last year, still seems like he can hit a bit. He’s a serviceable 4th or 5th guy on the OF depth chart..

Guess he didn’t want to leave the US. His AAA numbers would probably translate to success overseas. Pay is a little better in Korea/Japan. Foreign team would probably have him doped up like a racehorse. That goes for a lot of players that suddenly turned into Babe Ruth once they landed on foreign soil.
