Pirates Sign Vince Velasquez

By Darragh McDonald | December 13, 2022 at 8:05am CDT

Dec. 13: The Pirates have formally announced a one-year deal with Velasquez. Their 40-man roster is now full. Pittsburgh has yet to formally announce the signing of lefty Jarlin Garcia, who agreed to a deal on the same day as Velasquez. They’ll need to make a corresponding 40-man move for Garcia once his physical is complete and that deal is official.

Dec. 6: The Pirates and righty Vince Velasquez are in agreement on a one-year deal, reports Kiley McDaniel of ESPN.com. Velasquez will make $3.15MM, according to Robert Murray of FanSided. Velasquez is represented by CAA Sports.

Velasquez, 31 in June, has pitched in each of the past eight MLB seasons, mostly with the Phillies but also with the Astros, Padres and White Sox. He has occasionally tantalized with some high strikeout numbers but has rarely been able to be consistently effective for extended stretches. His lowest ERA in a single season is 4.12, which came back in 2016, though he’s also been above 5.00 in three separate seasons, including one above 6.00. His career high in terms of strikeout rate is 29.9%, in the shortened 2020 campaign, but it’s also been as low as 21.6%. His walk rate has been as low as 7.8% but also as high as 11.8%.

All told, Velasquez has 726 1/3 innings in his career with a 4.93 ERA, 25.1% strikeout rate and 9.4% walk rate. Those numbers vaguely resemble an effective back-end starter, which Velasquez has occasionally been, just not reliably. Last year, he signed a $3MM deal with the White Sox and began the year in the rotation but was hit hard and bumped to the bullpen before the end of May, only making two starts for the rest of the year.

It’s unclear if the Pirates plan to use him as a starter or a reliever, but he fits the mold of the low-cost rotation addition they have done in recent years. They signed Tyler Anderson to a $2.5MM deal in 2021 and traded him to the Mariners at the deadline for prospects Carter Bins and Joaquin Tejada. Going into 2022, they inked Jose Quintana to a $2MM deal and later flipped him to the Cardinals, alongside Chris Stratton, for Johan Oviedo and Malcom Nunez. It’s possible that they have similar designs on Velasquez this year, with the veteran ideally holding down a rotation spot and pitching well enough to become a midseason target of other clubs.

The Pirates have been aggressively rebuilding in recent years, finishing last in the National League Central in each of the past four seasons, tying with the Reds in 2022. It’s unlikely they will suddenly jump into contention in 2023, but they have been looking to bolster their young roster with some veteran additions on short-term deals. They acquired Ji-Man Choi from the Rays and signed free agent Carlos Santana for their first base/designated hitter mix, then signed Jarlín García for some left-handed relief. It was reported earlier this morning that starting pitching was on the list with the club looking to potentially add a couple of arms into the rotation. If Velasquez is indeed one of them, he will join Mitch Keller and Roansy Contreras, with JT Brubaker likely taking up a spot as well. There are some in-house options who could be in the mix as well, including Oviedo, Luis Ortiz, Bryse Wilson and Zach Thompson, with health and performance likely determining who gets the nod most frequently. If they find enough success in that group to bump Velasquez to the bullpen, he posted a 4.25 ERA as a reliever in 2022 compared to a 5.26 as a starter.

It’s the belief of management that they have a nucleus of a team on the verge of maturity
Cruz, Hayes, Castro and Suwinsky are all young, now have major league experience and should get better in 2023.

          yes. I agree.

Now that we’ve got a glimpse of Cruz, Roansey, Hayes etc , we know they have something cooking with guys like Nick Gonzalez, Quin Priester, Hank Davis, Swaggerty, Peguero; Termarr not far away.

I think this year they bring a team that is exciting to evaluate and maybe finishes 7-10 games out of a wildcard spot.

looking for improvement but not contention yet.

Fellas, it’s time to start getting pumped about being Pirates fans again!.. for another 3-5 year window before firesale.

Velasquez moving from CB Park to PNC Park and from NL East to NL Central should improve his stats a fair amount. I like this signing.

That team had effectively 3 years of 100 loss seasons. Finding someone to waive aint hard. Start with Underwood.

Underwood will most certainly be the player waived. He’s arbitration eligible and stands to gain a significant raise

Go-They are quickly running out of them.If Underwood goes for the lefty reliever the only two that I see are Triolo back down to escape the Rule 5 draft but put on designation and perhaps Vilade who may end up jumping around to many teams.
          Who else is there?
They need two spots for catchers at the least.
BC May need to make a trade for any of the others to bring back decent good players who are not ML ready and who do not need to be rostered.

When I consume cannabis, it’s been my preference to bake brownies using the liquid form in lieu of vegetable oil then mix in the actual vegetable form of cannabis. Each piece is as potent as one can imagine. If it’s kept in a tight container in the freezer, a complete brownie from a mix, it lasts almost 6 months

Reynolds knows they have talent and are ready to compete. It’s all about his money. He doesn’t hit the ball hard and won’t be a free agent until 31. A lot can happen in 3 years. I would want 150 million guarantee if I was him. As a owner I wouldn’t be interested in giving it to him.

when you have a ton of top prospects due up around the same time , then you do indeed have a window.

        future roster breakdown with potentials

        C: Endy Rodriguez – all-star
        1B: Hank Davis – elite
        2B: Nick Gonzalez – elite
        SS: Termarr – elite
        3B: Hayes – all-star
        OF: O’Neil Cruz – elite
        CF: Swaggerty – starter
        OF: Bae – starter

        SP – Roansey – All-star
        SP – Keller – starter
        SP – Priester – All-star
        SP – Ortiz- starter

now add in another elite 1st overall pick like Dollander or Crews and the 2026 pirates are actually insane

meaning ability to make an all-star game. above-average starter.

elite would refer to multiple all star games.

          it also says “potentials”

If Nutting were to sell the team, nothing would really change. They would have the exact same revenue streams that they have now. No owner spends millions of their own money to field a team. Cuban is on record saying that the best thing he ever did was to decide not to buy the Pirates or any MLB organization as the economics of the sport are broken and most franchises are not worth the investment.

even with complete trash bag additions like Gaby Sanchez, Ike Davis, Travis Snider, Wandy Rodriguez, Vance Worley, the pirates core was able to lead them to the playoffs.

while Huntington struck absolute gold with AJ Burnett & Francisco Liriano & Russell Martin,
he ultimately failed at securing any meaningful ABs from RF and 1B.

Ben has shown he can find reliable innings out of free agency from the likes of Tyler Anderson, Jose Quintana, and now will get another case study out of Vincent Velazquez who seems the appropriate pickup.

Carlos Santana is also an exciting addition to the middle of the order. Much more promising addition than say Gaby Sanchez or Travis Snider under Neal.

Point is, when the time comes Ben has proven will be able to supplement the roster appropriately.

Is this a Travis Williams burner account?

Do you realize this is a 3-time 100++ loss (pace in 2020) team? The only thing that’d be exciting about Santana is if he broke into a spirited rendition of Oye Como Va during the 7th inning stretch.

If you told me signing Cody Bellinger would be exciting, ok. Carlos Santana? Get a grip. You’re out of your mind.

I gave Ben the benefit of the doubt – but thus far he’s proven zero. I am also disturbed by the fact that he gave up 2 years of Starling Marte (plus $1.5M) for a couple of teenagers, yet seems be be unwilling to give up 3 years of Bryan Reynolds for anything remotely reasonable. Makes zero sense and ultimately is not in the best interests of the team, now or in the future.

because Reynolds timeline fits into having Roansey, Hayes & Cruz up

and Henry Davis, Gonzalez, Swaggerty and Priester as early as September this year.

Martes 3 years were right in the heart of a rebuild.
As seen by “teenager” Liover Peguero is actually now a 21 year old ready to make the jump to the bigs.

Steve-Good post.I think that Goku is seeing the glass not as half full but almost overflowing.
It seems to me that BC has been smart with getting potentially good young players. Some of his trades have been good.I said it when they made the Marte trade that it was a shameful giveaway. It does seem, however, that Marte’s subsequent trades did not get the teams much more in return than the Pirates got.I think that it was a simple salary dump, probably required by Nutting.
Santana May have to provide entertainment as his exciting years have long since left the building.
NH was good at trades and free agent signings.BC seems much better at scouting and signing young players which is an absolute necessity with small market teams. The results are still not in regarding trades and free agent signings as he has been burdened with a much worse team than NH had the last ten years of his employment.
I do think that Shelton and the hitting coach have long since needed to go,and BC may be afraid to do that in case he would be next.

the roster has to show improvement before firing Shelton.

may sound like an oxymoron, but it’s always been known he was a rebuild manager. If Roansey and Keller pickup where they left off , and Cruz continues to be a unicorn, then they can get a more interesting candidate.

we saw this with Clint Hurdle in 2011 after a full season of McCutchen in the bigs and a promise of top prospects like Cole & Marte due up.

this time around its O’Neil Cruz as the guy with MVP potential, and prospects like Davis, Termarr, Gonzalez and hopefully Dollander.

maybe the next manager is Bruce Bochy, Mike Scioscia , who knows?

but what we do know that Shelton has never been more than a place-holder while the team tanked.

Goku-Hurdle had already taken an overachieving team to the World Series when he was hired and he only signed up if there were promises to get better.
Shelton has the worst record of all time for a non expansion team.
They are not going to win with him even if they had the 1927 Yankees roster.
There is no guarantee that the next guy will be much better, but they may be able to get a guy like Hurdle because the 2010 team was no better than this one.
They also need to fire the hitting coach and figure on which minor league coaches to keep.
I like Shelton and think that he is a players manager who was put into an untenable situation.
But it is time to move on and show the fans that they are trying to do better.

Vince V. is almost certainly better than Wilson and Thompson, but he will be competing with Ortiz for the #5 spot. I feel like 1-4 are set already with Keller, Contreras, Brubaker, and Oviedo. He shouldn’t be given anything but shouldn’t be given up on not that you are. If a lefty can take a spot, JT Vince would be a good battle for that 5th spot. A Wilson Thompson battle for long man.

I really hope VV puts it together some season. He was a great Phillies teammate, and nobody worked harder. The guy has talent. I remember his 16 strikeout, 0 walk, three hit shutout of San Diego back in 2016. I thought he was going to be a star.

Totally agree, also watched him there. Maybe he will surprise us this time. Don’t think he will be a good signing like Tyler A. or Jose Q. May not even be able to flip him at all for a prospect.

that’s what people in Pittsburgh said about the team trading for J.A.Happ in 2015.
He had a great second half season with them then won 20 games in 2016 with I believe Toronto
They’ve recently managed to turn the careers of Tyler Anderson and Jose Quintana around so I can’t rule out another one

PNC is a much more pitcher-friendly ballpark in a less brutal division so I look for Velasquez to put up some much better numbers.

I am thinking he will get an opportunity to start. I am sure he wants to. He signed early with Pittsburgh. Pirates have a loaded pen. Not am exciting signing but has talent and they probably have a plan to get more of it out of him.

VV has a high ceiling and a low floor. The Phillies tried him as a starter at first which I am sure he wants to be,then split his time in the bullpen and starting.I think that he would make a good two-three inning reliever, maybe even a closer. He wants to be high profile but never showed it for long enough.
I would give him one last chance to start but if he fails then permanently move him to the bullpen. These players have to be realistic as to their best positions on the team.

I like that the Bucs are being active and not waiting for whatever’s left a month from now. Sure the jokes about payroll are easy and deserved, but they are identifying guys in their price range that MIGHT rebound or at least serve a purpose towards a greater goal. If he can eat up innings until Burrows or Priester are ready in June/July, he’s done his job. If he can eat 180 innings, fantastic, that’s less pressure to rush someone further down the line who isn’t ready.

Garcia gives them a lefty out of the bullpen (and the only lefty on the roster at the moment). Santana and Choi give them competent defense at 1B and hopefully improved bats as well (personally I liked Chavis, but these guys are an upgrade).

Hopefully GMBC can find another starter, possibly even on a multi year deal. Until Nutting dies, there’s no hope of playing the in deep end, so keep doing what you can until there’s a new owner.

Would like a lhp starter. Still might be coming. You don’t need to spend big to get big results. Every year there is so much value out there. Pirates are having a fantastic fall.

Ryan Yarbrough is a free agent who’s been fairly decent for the Rays until last year. A soft tossing lefty who could be a complement to all the righties.

Good point, bucsfan. Nutting last year said his kids aren’t interested in becoming involved with this franchise which suggested to me that he won’t be leaving it to his family when he passes away.
I’m 67, and annually hope he sells the franchise or kicks early so Pittsburgh might be serious contenders before I die

Yeah his plan was always setting up his children for life, but if they don’t want to be involved maybe he sells sooner. As another person commented on another post, there’s no hope of him being removed because outside of being a terrible owner, he’s actually a decent human being. I’m sure there are things related to his other business ventures that people could question, but let’s be real no one makes millions of dollars by being nice or playing completely fairly.

I wouldn’t go that far in describing Nutting as a decent human being
Sure he sponsors building new ballparks for the disabled and less fortunate but by using the franchise as the sponsor, he’s able to use those donations as a tax write off
Also, in years past, the annual Pirates Charity promotion always included a variety of Bucs trinkets, autographed baseballs ( current and former players), autographed baseball bats and jerseys, depending on the type of “ bag” purchased and 2 tickets to a home game
In 2022, the bag consisted of just a bag.
          Anything autographed was sold separately

He’s even a cheapskate for charities

Velasquez sucks. Teams have been trying to harness his natural abilities for about a decade now. None have succeeded. It’s over. He should either become a short-form reliever or be out of baseball. He tantalizes with good stuff but his ERA always ends up around 5 or 6. He is what his stats say he is, and that’s not a good pitcher.

The line ups have been dizzying for sure. Is it Shelton, or a mysterious hand guiding the line up. Seems like endless auditions for spot in batting order. That can’t be very settling for the players. How many times do we read that a good player underperforms because of lack of consistent playing time? Is lack of a consistent line up imparting the team’s performance? Impossible to know when there are so many players around the same performance level being shuffled in and out of the line up and through different positions. They are throwing spaghetti at the wall to see what sticks (or should I say pierogis?).

Shelton has had to fashion lineups out of the garbage that he has been handed. My response has been, ok, sit ________(fill in the blank) and who is Shelton going to replace him with? There are 3-4 position players on the bench and 1 is a catcher. the other 2-3 guys he has available most times were hitting in the .225 range and no better defensively.

Just goes to show, strike out approx a batter per inning (minimum) and you will never stop getting chances I today’s game. He was a better kind of bad last year. Whip much improved, for instance. I remember yesterday seeing Mike Hamptons statistics and how he pitched well in a hitters era without striking out anyone practically and outperforming era indicators almost yearly. The game is too reliant on Ks.This guy would’ve been in KBO or Independent ball if he didn’t have high strikeout numbers in his career. Other guys who strikeout a modest amount are given one half-hearted chance to prove us wrong and show they can succeed. Why is that? As much as pitching to contact can be unpredictable it can be every bit as lucky as it is unlucky and nobody ever got 2 outs on a strikeout without catchers help or some oddness. But Ks fascinate us so, Bor ng as they are to the eye. Dominance with or without precision is more impressive than craftiness with precision.

Vinnie will always tantalize, but the consistency will never be there. He fits the classic profile of the million dollar arm and ten cent head. Nice kid and all, but we have seen far too many pitchers just like him over the years.. The pitching coach that can keep him totally focused should write a book…

The paragon of a garbage franchise strikes again with another mediocre signing. Velasquez won’t move the needle of the Bucs’ perennial basement dwelling one bit.

To believe that the Pirates are on the verge of competitiveness with an infield, consisting of strikeout of error machine Oneil Cruz as well as a .244 BA/.659 OPS Ke’Bryan Hayes at 3B, takes a solid dose of strong hallucinogens in one’s morning coffee.

      Bucco-No.
There is as much chance of losing 100 as there is of winning 75.
They have had 100 game equivalent losing seasons for 3 1/2 years.
They need to show something before many of us will believe in them.

Now this was a good signing by Pittsburgh Consistency had been his biggest problem. He can get in to good stretches at times, but when he doesn’t have his stuff he gets shellacked.
Compared to the crazy salaries being doled out this year this signing looks much better in comparison.
Maybe they can use him as a trade chip to acquire talent at the trade deadline, like they did with Jaime Quintana last season.

They were able to work miracles getting Quintana’s career straighten out. Maybe they can do the same with V^2.
