Guardians Promote JT Maguire To Coaching Staff

By Mark Polishuk | January 28, 2023 at 2:16pm CDT

The Guardians have named JT Maguire as their new outfield coach, Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.  Maguire has been working in Cleveland’s organization for the last five years, and this will be his first official role with the big league team.

The 36-year-old Maguire spent six years in the college coaching ranks before making a relatively quick rise through the Guardians’ system.  First hired as a bench coach for Cleveland’s rookie league club in 2019, the canceled 2020 minor league season saw Maguire coach at the Major League alternate training site before moving onto a bench coach role with Triple-A Columbus in 2021.  The Guardians then shifted Maguire to a coordinator role, overseeing the organization’s outfield and baserunning efforts.

This experience made Maguire a logical choice to step into the Guards’ outfield coaching role left vacant when Kyle Hudson left the club in December to become the new Red Sox first base coach.  Given the number of homegrown products in Cleveland’s outfield mix, Maguire is already quite familiar with such players as Steven Kwan, Oscar Gonzalez, Will Benson, and the next wave of prospects who might receive more MLB exposure in 2023.

Didn’t know there was such a position as “Outfield Coach”. Who’s coaching the Ball Girl?

Does that come with a set of wings?
Ball girl, what happened to the ball boy?
When is MLB going to shove the first female player down our throats?

Ball girls have been around for decades.. do you even watch baseball? This explains why you constantly grumble about random topics instead of talking baseball…

Let’s talk about what we really have here, Half time with pretty girls who run on the field and ask coaches “won’t went wrong”? I’m so sick of this crap, why do we really have to watch this garbage? We don’t , I’m done. Kiss off NFL

Fool, I’ve watched BB since 1957, bat boys have been a part of BB since then. I tire of watching goofy girls miss foul balls, & it’s all cute.

          CKinSTL;

          Curly has his points.

I do think he’s conflating the fast talking, highly made-up female “game reporters” used on national NBA and NFL telecasts – that breathlessly talk about minor things as if no one had even known about them – with ball girls.

In MLB the Houston Astros 3 person telecast includes Julia Morales that Todd Kalas often goes to when she sees a pattern of something happening in the game. Her insights are quite good….as well as Suzyn Waldman’s who’s been working with John Sterling on the Yankees radio broadcasts for 11 years. She is an incredibly knowledgeable color analyst – better than anyone on the Yankees
          TV broadcasts..

You and Curley may not know it but the SF Giants often have old men as ball boys at their home games. Those gentlemen over 65 frequently mess up hard hit balls….but the crowd cheers them on.

The NBA and NFL are jokes – led by their owners and Commis-
sioners. They basically sell entertainment – while their players concerns car marketing heir brands – and all of them can’t count
the money they rake in. MLB is he only professional team league
that still has some sport left in it. Can’t speak to the NHL.

I’d subdivide the coaching further with providing an towering flyball coach, a line drive corraling instructor, and a looping texas leaguer specialist.

Eventually it’ll be like football where there’s a coach for every single position on the field. SS coach, LF coach, CF coach, RF coach, 2B coach, assistant catching coach who works specifically with the backup catcher, etc. and none of them will have overlapping responsibilities.

That’s why we stop watching & stop paying for stupid. Eventually, they will out pay these “stars”. Someone has to pay the bills, hopefully, not the fans.

Guardians turned out to be a cool name. What other team name should we demand to change?

All of them; they’re either insensitive to animals and because there were once racial barriers and the game was invented during slavery, ergo, the game is inherently and systemically racist, including all team names. As with any job title, we need total equity and inclusion; 25 person rosters that represent virtually every victimized and minority class. As with the rest of the labor force, skills and quality of work is meaningless. Other aspects of society are becoming bazarre, so why would baseball be exempt?

I was just thinking what an awful team name “Guardians” is…. But hey, I’m a white man over 50 so everything I think is illegal and my accomplishments and family history is irrelevant.
