Jim Edmonds also mentioned the possibility of a Contreras trade today during the game. Crazy is the only word for it. But as Mark mentioned, he may be one of several heading out the door. They should let Mo get what he can for Contreras, then force him to step away and let someone else handle the rest. The current front office regime can’t be allowed to survive this disaster intact.

If they tried to trade him now it would be insane. He’s still productive, but teams would take advantage of the cards desperation and it would be a buyers market. The cards would have to eat a bunch of salary even though he’s still a valuable player.
You don’t complain about your car, say that it doesn’t perform how you expected and it wasn’t worth the investment; then turn towards everyone and say “who wants to buy this awesome car I’m selling!”
DonOsbourne
Buyers’ market for sure. The Cardinals have zero leverage. They’re going to take a bath on Contreras no matter what now. That’s why heads have to roll.
BeansforJesus
There’s not much benefit to trading him now. Let heads roll, but keep the player. You aren’t getting premium prospects and you’re still eating salary. At that point it’s better to keep him for his above average bat and hope time in the org can right the ship behind the plate.
Imagine trading him, paying say $10-$15 mil of the contract, then have him turn it around a year later? Then everyone would be sharpening their pitch forks because the team didn’t give him a chance.
Just clean house and acknowledge it wasn’t a great move in private. If he can’t improve his work with pitchers and his game planning. (I assume these are the issues. He’s not taking the time to understand his battery mates or the opposing team…or can’t) in a year or two then you have justification to cut bait without blowback.
DonOsbourne
For the record, I don’t expect him to be traded. But, if the pitchers are refusing to throw to him, he becomes a very awkward fit on the roster. Eating the money might be easier than living with the pain of making it work.
Gwynning
I can’t imagine eating most of that 80-something milly just to ship him out… surmising he waives his NTC (a no-brainer now, I guess)… suppose you just package him with an extra OFer (TON?) and get what you can? Strange happenings, regardless.
DonOsbourne
Well, they’re not going to eat 80 million no matter what. They would let him sell hot dogs in the bleachers before they just eat the whole contract.
Gwynning
Well, I suppose I could have worded that better as you and I both know that. A large portion would have to be eaten though, at least for any sort of value in return. I would agree the odds of him being moved are low; just seems somewhat crazy to have this convo so early on in that contract. All the best, amigo!
DonOsbourne
Crazy. Just plain crazy. Enjoy your evening. I hope the Pads can hang on tonight.

It’s a tight series! The Dodgers are tough as nails. I’d like to see some insurance here in the 8th, but I’m thinking Hader locks it down anyway. Cheers!!

Dakota Hudson? Hard pass. This team is hard enough to watch. Hudson deserves nothing. He’s blown every recent chance he’s been given. His numbers in the minors are not good either. Time to close the books.

I would take a dump on Eutaw street if the O’s traded Mateo
Atloriolesfan
I wouldn’t. Depends on what they get.
BeansforJesus
Can you put a flag in it so we know it’s yours?
2012orioles
They’ll put one of those home run plaques down for me I believe.

Move over Cal Raleigh, we got a new Big Dumper in town.

The Angels got shellacked again today by Texas.
Plugnplay
Yeah they did, but probably a good thing. Now just DFA Suarez and the team is complete, since Loup is out to.
kellin
Suarez might be going in the IL which takes care of the problem.

Re: bench clearing brawl and pitch clock violation:
I would think there would be no clock violation.
Pitcher hits batter with ball, the batter charges the mound and the ball just kind of rolls away. Both sides enter the fray to fight for their team.
I can’t imagine that the pitch clock would start after the ball bounces off the batter’s back, but rather once it is in his hand.
I wonder if catchers ever pick up the ball after such a thing and throw it away. Someone can trip on that and roll an ankle. Although the action isn’t centered around home plate at all.

Trevor Bauer is pitching in Japan. He seems to be doing pretty well. ERA of 1.26. 11.6 K’s per 9. Are any major league teams desperate enough yet?
DarkSide830
Desperate enough for what? He’s under contract.
