Orioles Acquire Robbie Glendinning From Royals

By Darragh McDonald | May 18, 2023 at 5:51pm CDT

The Orioles announced that they have acquired minor league infielder Robbie Glendinning from the Royals in exchange for cash considerations. Glendinning will report to Triple-A Norfolk. Robert Murray of FanSided reported the deal prior to the official announcement.

Glendinning, 27, is originally from Australia but attended the University of Missouri before being selected by the Pirates in the 21st round of the 2017 draft. He went on to hit .274/.361/.417 through the end of 2019, climbing from Low-A up to Double-A in that time. The minor leagues were canceled by the pandemic in 2020 and Glendinning missed 2021 as well, getting released by the Pirates prior to 2022.

He signed with the Royals last year and played for their Double-A squad, hitting 19 home runs while walking in 14.5% of his plate appearances, though also striking out at a 32.4% clip. He finished the year with a batting line of .252/.373/.439, translating to a wRC+ of 112.

He suited up for the Australian team in this year’s World Baseball Classic, hitting .300/.391/.600 in five games there. He then returned to the Northwest Arkansas Naturals and has hit .242/.373/.363 so far this year for a wRC+ of 105, walking at a 16.4% clip while striking out 25.5% of the time.

He’s played all four infield positions in his minor league career but has been limited to the corner spots so far this year. The Orioles announced him as a shortstop, though he hasn’t played that position since 2019. He’ll head to the Triple-A level for the first time in his career and give the O’s a bit more non-roster infield depth.

The final piece to an Oriole world series contender! Congrats to Baltimore baseball lover boys and fan girls. It has been too long since real hope? Yes, a lot. But now, oh now, you have Robbie “down under thunder” Glendinning coming to your lineup so you will slay murder Yankees, Rays, and Sox. Get your parade and banner ready! Yes for you. Please root for my Tigers too when we get our chance like this.

Pretty old for a prospect. But he has some solid, albeit unspectacular, tools.

Wouldn’t be shocked if he turned into a useful piece of a lineup but I don’t expect much either. He’s been league average at an advanced age in AA. Wish him the best and hope he can make it up and impress.

Everyone said Roy Hobbs was too old to be a prospect and we all know how that turned out…

Hmmm…is this a sign of a Westburg promotion? Prieto is batting .400 in AA and Westy has nothing left to prove. Not sure why we needed minor league filler. Maybe an injury on the farm

The Orioles are so loaded on position player prospects that it’s not even funny. I’ve never seen a team with such an embarrassment of riches in the farm system. They won’t even have to spend big money on pitching going forward, because they can just trade from their surplus of minor league hitting talent to improve their pitching staff.

Maybe they’re looking for some depth in anticipation of trading an infielder or 2 for a pitching upgrade…

Australian and Missourian? Thats like twisted metal but with more meth.

Sanction the player and the the state until this gets sorted out. That’s a deadly combination if that guy has a drivers license. Or have him transferred teams via a
    Con air method.

He seems to be consistently decent in the minors. Not sure why he hasn’t gotten a chance.

the Royals are a badly ran organization from top to bottom. I was excited about the Quatraro hire, but it won’t matter with the morons above him.

Glendinning was always someone I kept an eye on where he was in the Pirates system. He’s easy to root for. There’s a bit of a “Rudy” aspect to him in that he wasn’t a highly touted amateur and a later round draft pick without any loud tools so he’s had to grind his way up the ladder. But there’s also some talent as he is a reliable defensive player at multiple positions with a slightly above average bat that can pop about a dozen or so homers a year. Also had some unlucky breaks as he had a solid year in 2019 starting in A ball and getting promoted to AA and not looking overmatched there as he was making his way to being a viable option to becoming a bench/depth piece in the upper minors and for the big league club. Then the pandemic year canceled the 2020 minor league season and he had Tommy John during spring training in 2021 and got passed up on the depth chart for middle infielders by Rodolfo Castro, Ji Hwan Bae, Tucupita Marcano, Nick Gonzales and Liover Peguero. He’d probably be right in line with that group fighting to lock down a big league gig otherwise.

He is hitting .242 for a AA team. What exactly are you talking about? Also, they have plenty of infield prospects in their minor league system better than him.

I know a lot of MLB fans didn’t watch, but Glendinning certainly made a positive impression during Australia’s surprising run in the WBC.
