The Opener: Freeman, Sanchez, Stripling

By Nick Deeds | May 18, 2023 at 8:43am CDT

As the 2023 regular season continues, here are three things we’ll be keeping an eye on around the baseball world throughout the day today:

1. Freeman approaching milestone:

Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman sits at 299 career home runs. With his next trip around the bases, he’ll become just the 155th player in MLB history to hit 300 home runs in his career, joining Miguel Cabrera, Nelson Cruz, Giancarlo Stanton, Mike Trout, Joey Votto, Evan Longoria, Paul Goldschmidt, and Nolan Arenado as the only active players to reach the milestone. Freeman is playing up to his usual excellent standards so far in 2023, with a .310/.382/.511 slash line that puts him right in line with his career averages.

2. Will Sanchez be promoted?

Rumors percolated yesterday that the Mets were considering a promotion to the big league club for veteran catcher Gary Sanchez, who is in Triple-A on a minor league deal. Sanchez, who spent seven seasons in New York with the Yankees, has posted a 1.077 OPS in 32 plate appearances for the club’s affiliate in Syracuse. Sanchez would take the spot of Michael Perez on the roster if promoted, forming a tandem with longtime top prospect Francisco Alvarez for the time being. The Mets, of course, would need to re-evaluate their catching tandem upon the return of Omar Narvaez, who is due back from a calf strain sometime next month. The potential promotion for Sanchez comes against the backdrop of his looming opt-out, which he can exercise tomorrow.

3. Stripling exits:

Giants right-hander Ross Stripling exited yesterday’s start against the Phillies with lower back tightness, as relayed by MLB.com’s Maria Guardado. The 2023 season has been a struggle for Stripling so far. The 33-year-old righty owns a 7.24 ERA and 6.74 FIP in 32 1/3 innings, with five starts and four appearances out of the bullpen. The Giants have an off-day today, meaning it’s possible that Stripling’s status going forward won’t be made clear until tomorrow. With that being said, if Stripling is set to miss time, that could open the door for left-hander Sean Manaea to return to the rotation. Manaea has struggled similarly to Stripling so far this year, with a 7.81 ERA and 6.74 FIP in 27 2/3 innings of work split between six starts and three appearances out of the bullpen.

As a Braves fan I’d love if he hits it here…. Preferably a solo shot though lol

Maybe it is. But I can live with a HR against us if it means we get to celebrate his success with him.

Or maybe you’re just too unappreciative of what he brought to this organization to understand.

Personally, we ought to be able to overcome a solo home run to win the game and have it be moot anyway.

How about the Giants admit both Strippling and Manea were terrible signings and give that rotation spot to Junis or Harrison?

I knew Manaea was gonna suck, and I don’t know what the Giants saw in him because he struggled last year as well. Stripling had a solid year in TOR in ‘22, but he’s not fooling anyone in SF. I’d put him on the 60-day IL just to get him outta the mix for a while.

He’s just inactively costing the Yankees millions of dollars. He was great for the Giants last year as was Gausman the year before. Trying to remember who the Giants GM was that signed them both. They also got the most out of them beings how both left to sign large contracts. Yankees fans are aware of that now, right?

So, what do you like about Farhan Zaidi? Losing ??? I mean, its been 5 years . whats it gonna take 8 Years? 10 Years? As a fan you are willing to give him what 8-9 Years .

If he only turned in 1 winning in 5 years here in Philadelphia and the team was under .500 THIS year at Mothers Day. He’d be FIRED

Agreed. Some fans seem to really enjoy the perpetual rebuild. The problem is that the Giants owners don’t need a winning team to generate revenue. They are a real estate development company first and foremost, with a baseball team on the side. They would still make a ton of money even if not a single fan went to a game all year. Makes it hard for the fans to impact the bottom line by not going to games when the actual baseball team is just a side hustle for the owners.

There are way better fans than me. I just despise fans like you. A fan that thinks the internet is exclusively for negativity. When I say exclusively, I mean exclusively. Been here a while now. When you aren’t posting negativity about a player or the FO, you are giving up on them. Its an extreme approach that I think is pathetic, sad and worthy of pushback. So that’s what I do. I push back with a little redirection of the negativity back at it’s source. Sorry. It’s how I roll with ultra negative people.

And speaking of the Phillies. They’re getting dangerously close to the same record they had last year when Girardi got fired. I agreed with the firing incidentally. The Phils have too good a lineup to be floundering around right now. I know the Hoskins injury came at a horrible time but when the Giants swept the Phils this week I had a hard time understanding what’s going on. I thought the Turner signing was going to make them even better than last year especially with Castellanos off to a good start. I expect them to turn it around like they did last year. And Realmuto is just a steady rock in that lineup. Like him a lot

Analytics “guru” Farhan clearly has no clue what he’s doing and just tries to avoid making BIG moves, hoping desperately that his dozens of scrap heap, little moves pays off. The Giants need a real baseball man running things and not just Andrew Friedman’s gofer, sidekick and flunky.

You knew the Giants were in trouble when Zaidi hired Kapler . Farhan Zaidi’s roster construction has done nothing but foster a losing culture in Frisco. That team miserably bad.
Quarter of the season has been played and the Giants can’t post a winning record. Statistically Worst Bullpen and Defense in NL Team hitting stats are mediocre .

Last I checked the Giants swept Philadelphia and are only 2-1/2 out of wild card. Same record as last year’s NL Champions. Their record is not much to be proud of but neither are most other NL teams. And I also think Manaea and Stripling suck. Junis is much better and why Kapler doesn’t make the change is a little dumbfounding. And their defense is better than you give them credit for. Grab some pine meat.

Do you watch them every game like I do? Because if you did you would know what I meant. Numbers aren’t everything. I see the improvements on defense from Wade, Davis, Bart and Estrada have made. Haniger is much better defensively than what the Giants were throwing at LF in the recent past. Don’t get me started on Sabol though. He sucks defensively. Yaz also does a pretty good job and Bryce Johnson is a good defender. And oh yeah, have you watched Casey Schmitt? Because if you did you’d know he’s pretty good too. Numbers aren’t everything all the time. Eye test is also a pretty good indicator. I do my homework every game they play by watching them and I say they’re better than what you and the numbers think.

You still didn’t answer my question. Do you watch them everyday? I never said they were a good defensive team. But if you watched them the last couple years and compared those teams to this year there are definite improvements. Still a lot more improvement needed but I see that starting to happen is all I’m saying. It was horrific last year. Better this year. And hopefully even more improvement next year. Take care.

    1. Given that he’s up against the garbage Cardinals staff, he’ll probably mash a few times before the series is over.

    2. No. Make him decide if he wants to stay with the organization or not first. See if he opts out. If he does, he was not motivated enough to be on the team.

    3. Stripling is making some good money given that he’s 40% worse than league average. (OPS+).
