White Sox Place Mike Clevinger On 15-Day IL

By Nick Deeds | May 22, 2023 at 12:15pm CDT

May 22: The Sox announced that Scholtens has indeed been recalled from Charlotte to take Clevinger’s spot on the roster. They’ll go with a bullpen game against Cleveland tonight rather than giving Scholtens a conventional start, however. Right-hander Jimmy Lambert, who hasn’t pitched more than 1 2/3 innings in any outing this year, has been announced as Chicago’s starter.

May 21: The White Sox placed right-hander Mike Clevinger on the 15-day IL, retroactive to May 18, with wrist inflammation prior to today’s game against the Royals, the club announced. Clevinger was expected to start tomorrow’s game against the Guardians, but will instead be out for at least the rest of the month. He’ll be first eligible to return in early June, though there’s no clear timeline for Clevinger’s return at this time. No corresponding move has been announced, with the White Sox expecting to make a move ahead of tomorrow’s game against Cleveland.

Clevinger once appeared to be among the most promising young starters in the sport, as he posted a 2.96 ERA and 3.39 FIP over 489 1/3 innings from 2017-2020. That four year stretch of dominance saw him record a 28% strikeout rate while walking just 9% of batters he faced. Unfortunately for Clevinger, he would miss the entire 2021 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery, ultimately returning to the mound early in the 2022 campaign.

Upon his return from the surgery, Clevinger’s fastball velocity had dipped from 95.1 mph down to 93.6 mph. In addition to the lost velocity, the right-hander has seen a major dip in his production since returning to the mound, with a 4.40 ERA and 5.02 FIP in ten starts since the beginning of the 2022 campaign. Clevinger, who is in Chicago on a one-year, $12MM deal this season, is far from the only White Sox starter struggling so far in 2023, as each of Dylan Cease, Michael Kopech, and Lance Lynn have ERAs above 4.50 this season.

While Clevinger looks to fight off his current ailment and get things back on track, the White Sox could potentially turn to Jesse Scholtens in the rotation, as the right-hander is the only other healthy starter on the 40-man roster. Scholtens, who made his MLB debut earlier this season, has a 3.00 ERA in three innings of work for the White Sox this season and a 3.99 ERA in 38 1/3 innings of work at the Triple-A level. Other possible option include Daniel Ponce de Leon and Luke Farrell, though both would require a 40-man roster spot.

Umm.. they investigated and found that she was a psycho that lied about everything. Glad he’s back without false repercussions! Love when investigations work properly!

“and found that she was a psycho that lied about everything.”

I’m having a very difficult time finding a source that says the woman lied about anything. Any article I see just says MLB declined to discipline him but that:

“As part of his path forward, Mr. Clevinger has voluntarily agreed to submit to evaluations by the joint treatment boards under the collectively bargained policies, and to comply with any of the boards’ recommendations.

“MLB will continue to make support services available to Mr. Clevinger, his family, and other individuals involved in the investigation.”

It could be that they were unable to corroborate any of the claims, not necessarily that they weren’t true. Or is there a source out there that has proven she lied? She’s still claiming abuse on her Instagram.

“Not necessarily that they weren’t true” = “not necessarily that they were true”. The investigation started when he was w the Pods last summer, and was kept under wraps. That’s a long time to investigate. So scumbag or not, he’s allowed to work going forward, no?

As is often so, two things can both be true. Quite often, crappy people find each other.

They didn’t find that at all. MLB found that they were going to send him to “voluntary” counseling for it, but that they were not going to suspend him.

Basically, MLB thinks he might be a slime so they are sending him to counseling, but they didn’t have enough evidence to corroborate her story or his story completely, so he is not getting suspended.

@Cooper. You really should read the final results of the investigation.

Even major league baseball didn’t discipline Clevinger. MLB disciplines their players for domestic abuse far more often than the justice system. Just because a story is published, even in The Athletic, doesn’t mean it’s true.

That MLB didn’t suspend him, doesn’t mean they cleared him either. From that article and every other one about the subject, we see that Clevinger is being sent to counseling for his problem instead of being suspended. They would not do that if there was not some evidence of at least an anger management issue.

What’s going on with the ChiSox? Are they going through a rebuild and have no choice other than to put a garbage product on the field and line the owners pockets with cash?

How are they putting a garbage product on the field? Underachieving badly, yes. Bad at their jobs, sure. But the starting rotation up until now, hasn’t missed a turn and they’re all name pitchers, including the Cy young runner up and guys who were recent all stars. They’re fielding a starting lineup that when healthy was a playoff roster in 20-21. It’s not like they’re trying to tank like Oakland. Their payroll is in the top third. How is this going through a rebuild and putting out a garbage product to line their pockets. Hyperbole much?

Yeah well they’re not trying to put out a garbage product- just bad at their jobs it would seem, which might be worse- back to being like the recent cycle of the Angels/Rangers or a poor man’s Mets

The biggest free agent contract during the whole rebuild (in team history for that matter) was given to Benintendi, a slightly above average outfielder who hit 5 homers last year. Maybe they are not overtly trying to put a garbage product on the field, but they have done basically nothing to improve for 3 straight offseasons, and have gotten worse instead of better during that “window”. B/c the ownership is too cheap and spineless to commit what it would have taken to sign Semien or Harper. Reindorf could have easily afforded, it would have been better to commit to one of those guys than waste ridiculous money on rotating short term dumpster dive players like Eaton, Harrison, Garcia, Kelly, Diekman, Velazquez, Clevinger. Get rid of most of those guys and they could have afforded to pay Semien’s annual salary with money left over.

One of the worst organizations in sports, have won a playoff series in one season the past 50+ years.

Clevinger is an almost was talent. He might yet trigger his option, get another 1-2 bounce back deals and bank an additional $25M before he becomes untenable, because every team is so desperate for borderline quality “starting” pitchers.

Like the way he bobs and weaves on the mound. Kinda like he dodged a suspension. If he wants to bolt, go for it. Think they’d be okay by stretching out either of Garrett or Reylo

Clevinger dodged a bullet when his affair with Trevor Bauer accuser, Lindsey Hill, ended.

Somehow, she didn’t want Clevinger’s name brought up in depositions. Maybe she liked him, maybe she was paid off. Maybe she didn’t want to poop in her own pond of San Diego, as her father, baseball coach Rich Hill, was at the University of San Diego and that could have been much more socially difficult…

Any way, he’s lucky he avoided that mess.

So I was at Walgreens on 35th Winchester waiting to pick up my prescription at the pharmacy. I was standing in line and I turned around and noticed what was a hot chick behind me. That long flowing hair. Now keep in mind his back was to me at first. So I said hello sexy mama , how are you ? So the person turned towards me and guess who it was ? It was Mike himself. To my surprise as the Benny Hill music started to play in my head. True story! You heard it here first !

Tony La Russa gets popped for a DWI and immediately gets hired by the WhiteSox. Clevinger has assault and child abuse charges filed against him and immediately signs with the WhiteSox. Guaranteed Rate Field has always been a giant safe house for human garbage.

I sort of wonder what Deshaun Watson does in his offseasons. Maybe they could add him to the clubhouse, and he can bring some massage therapists to help these guys stop pulling hamstrings constantly. The guy does seem a bit massagynistic though… (nyuk nyuk).
