Alex Reyes Undergoes Shoulder Surgery, Won’t Pitch In 2023

By Nick Deeds | June 11, 2023 at 12:37pm CDT

Right-hander Alex Reyes won’t pitch in 2023 after undergoing shoulder surgery earlier this week, according to Bill Plunkett of the Orange County Register. This past offseason, the 28-year-old hurler signed with the Dodgers on a one-year deal that includes a $3MM club option for the 2024 season.

That, of course, will not come to pass, as Reyes as now gone under the knife for a second time in hopes of returning to the major league mound. Reyes has managed just 145 innings in his career since making his big league debut during the 2016 season due to countless injuries, though the right-hander has flashed immense talent when healthy. Most recently, Reyes posted a 3.24 ERA across 72 1/3 innings of work in 2021 that earned Reyes his first career All Star appearance.

As Plunkett notes, Reyes is now not expected to return to the majors until sometime in 2024, with a recovery time of at least twelve months. The outcome is surely deeply disappointed for both Reyes and the Dodgers, as Reyes had begun to ramp-up during Spring Training with an eye toward returning sometime before the All Star break. Unfortunately, Reyes had to be shut down thanks to increasing pain in his shoulder throughout his rehab process. At that point, Plunkett notes that more damage was found in Reyes’s throwing shoulder, though it was not related to the labrum that was repaired by Reyes’s previous surgery.

Fortunately for the Dodgers, the club has a solid bullpen even without Reyes, as the likes of Evan Phillips, Brusdar Graterol, and Caleb Ferguson have done well in holding down the late innings for LA this season. Going forward, the Dodgers will have to make a decision on Reyes’s $3MM option for 2024 in the coming months, though it’s possible the player and the club could come to terms on a different deal that would keep Reyes in LA without requiring the Dodgers to commit $3MM in guaranteed money to a pitcher who will have had a layoff of at least two and a half seasons due to injury.

I honestly can’t remember a time when he was healthy and off the Injured List.

Reyes: “You wanna hurt me? Go right ahead if it makes you feel any better. I’m an easy target. Yeah, you’re right, I walk too much. I also get hurt too much. I could be as healthy as you… but I don’t like to hurt people’s feelings. . . .What you see is what you get”

An absolute waste of a signing. Maybe next time keep one of the guys who actually played for you like Heaney or Martin

The only reason they had Heaney to lose was because of their willingness to bring in a buy low guy and fix him. The same thing they did with Reyes. You win some, u lose some. Hardly a wasted signing the day it was signed

Heaney was actually healthy when they signed him. Coming off being terrible with the Yankees isn’t the same as signing someone who at minimum was out until the All Star break and ultimately for the season

Its a small gamble for the Dodgers to shell out 3 million. Who knows with the club option he can come back after all star break in 24 to give them something.

Heaney got 12 million for this season and a 13 million player option for next season. Not sure how his signing is relevant to a 1 million signing of a risky RP with a injury history and a ton of talent

I agree and have become quite annoyed by these signings that Andrew seems to love

Bigger problem than the money paid is the 40 man spot they take up
They also take up resources all year long from the coaching staff trainers ect that could be directed towards other players

It all started with Kazmir BMC, this new infatuation with holding onto Trienan and Jimmy Nelson is super odd as well

Someone above mentioned CMartin, man how much better would we be today with him?

I agree completely, but saying this won’t buy you any love around here. No matter how many losing lottery tickets Friedman buys, many are still going to believe he’s some kind of genius.

the problem with covid and theses boards is that the brought the idiots out of the woodwork because during a lockdown what else are you going to do. now ff to now and things have normalized for the most part, the problem is that the idiots have drove most of the sensible fans that come to talk bb. so the few sensible people left are drowned out but the idiots.

Lol tbh both laws can be applied, while Sturgeon’s Law helps hammer my point I used Brannigan’s Law because zapp Brannigan is the perfect example of how a complete idiot is in charge of the earth’s military (or just watch an hour of futurama)

The summer of Harper/Machado is when this place starting going sideways Imo

Everything was a conspiracy, everything became owner v player just a complete mess. Before that summer this place was a great place to come bounce baseball ideas around in – I come here about twice a week now and skim Dodgers articles. Theres no longer much to learn or engage with inside the community

What’s sad is what you said is true, I’m a die hard cards fan but some of my bb discussions were with nyy and lad fans and here is a lil backstory, I hate both bloody teams. Even with my dislike for both teams still engaged in a civil respectful discussion because well I keep up on the teams my birds will face in oct most years. The trolling here is what I can’t stand it feels like sometimes I’m reading posts write n by the same 12 year olds yelling the n word on Xbox/ps5

The crowd that supports preemptive Tommy John surgery claps and cheers uncontrollably. “See what can happen?! No body part is safe! Replace them all at once!”

Unfortunately that 2021 All Star season is likely to be the “4 Touchdowns in a single game for Polk High” peak for Reyes’ career

HaHa, I agree. There are many words I can think of to describe LA’s pen, but “solid” isn’t one of them.

Is the Dodgers’ medical staff not good? This anomaly of so many pitchers being hurt seems off.
