Angels Designate Chad Wallach For Assignment, Transfer Anthony Rendon To 60-Day IL

By Darragh McDonald | August 18, 2023 at 4:55pm CDT

The Angels announced a series of roster moves today, including the previously-reported selection of prospect Nolan Schanuel. They also reinstated catcher Logan O’Hoppe from the 60-day injured list. One active roster spot was opened by first baseman C.J. Cron being placed on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to August 16, due to low back inflammation. Chad Wallach was designated for assignment, opening a spot on both the active and 40-man rosters. To open a second spot on the 40-man, third baseman Anthony Rendon was transferred to the 60-day injured list.

Wallach, 31, signed a minor league deal with the Halos in the offseason and had his contract selected in April when O’Hoppe landed on the injured list due to a torn labrum in his shoulder. Wallach has been sharing the catching duties with Matt Thaiss since then, generally performing well by backup catcher standards.

He struck out in 34.2% of his plate appearances and only batted .209, but he hit seven home runs in just 149 plate appearances. His 84 wRC+ indicates he was 16% below average overall, but catchers generally produce less at the plate, as the league’s backstops have a collective wRC+ of 89 this year. He’s been graded as a decent defender this year, with +1 Defensive Runs Saved and framing marks close to average.

But just as he joined the roster as O’Hoppe went to the injured list, he now departs as O’Hoppe is activated. The Halos will be hoping that O’Hoppe can pick up right where he left off, as he was hitting .283/.339/.547 before the shoulder injury. The club will put Wallach on waivers in the coming days, since the trade deadline is now in the rearview mirror. If any other team were to put in a claim, they could control him for two more years via arbitration. If he were to clear, he has enough service time to reject an outright assignment and elect free agency.

As for Rendon, he was placed on the injured list in mid-July due to a left shin contusion after fouling a ball off his leg. An MRI in the days after that IL placement revealed a deep bone bruise and he was shut down at that point. Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register reported this week that Rendon had yet to resume baseball activities. Once healthy, he’ll presumably need to get back into game shape with some kind of rehab assignment after this layoff.

Today’s transfer means he’s ineligible to return until 60 days from his initial IL placement, which would be the second week of September. Whether he’s ultimately able to return late in the year or not, this will go down as another frustrating campaign due to health reasons. Signed to a seven-year, $245MM deal after 2019, he has yet to play in 60 games in a season as an Angel, with just 43 so far this year. The first year of the contract wasn’t his fault, as the pandemic eventually led to a truncated 60-game schedule. But he’s made frequent IL trips in three straight seasons now.

Since the start of 2021, he’s played just 148 total games over that three-year stretch, going on the IL due to a left groin strain, left knee contusion, left hamstring strain, right hip impingement, right wrist surgery, another left groin strain and now this left shin contusion/bone bruise. He’s hit .235/.338/.363 in that time for a wRC+ of 97.

What is this “Anthony Rendon” you speak of?

      I read—

To open a second spot on the 40-man, third baseman Injured List was transferred to the 60-day injured list.

          V Wells?
Nah Hamilton is just a lost soul..

I agree. They should have traded Ohtani
I am not a big fan of these mega contract. Ohtani will be worth every penny to the owners of whatever team he signs for in merchandising $$$$, but the odds are he won’t live up to the worth on the field. At this point of his career his the best to ever, but it is extremely hard for these athletes to sustain it long term.

The only way the Angels can outdo their decision to hold Ohtani at the deadline is to re-sign him in the off-season, and I don’t think any of us would be surprised if that happened.

The Nats will take Rendon back if the Angels eat 90% of the remaining salary. Fortunately for some of us, we saw Rendon,Stras and Soto unleashing the fury during the 2019 playoff run to the WS. Tony Two Bags was something special and he will always have a place in the hearts of Nats fans (looking at his jersey now in my closet). Get healthy Rendon…

Moniak can’t play. But you are entitled to your opinion.

No one with a 33 percent k rate and a 11 to 1 bb to K to walk rate can succeed in the major leagues. He was sensational his first 125 PAs and horrible his last 125 PAs.

As for depending on the other players with a handful of big league ABs and IPs, being difference makers… good luck with that. That seldom works out in real life.

And he’s right to an extent. Moniak is hitting .118 vs LHP and his BABip was over .400 until recently and as it falls his average is coming down with it. His average should be down around .260 by the end of the season. A 4th OF.

          I did!
I simply offered a silver lining, in that there is some youthful talent on the club. I didn’t say they were the up and coming Braves, The Angels of the late 90s early 2000s had some good, not great players that were kept together, a few key players were added and things fell into place.

Like you said it was my opinion, yet you decided to rain your negativity on it.

Moniak is also strikes out over 50% of the time vs Left handed pitching. I would package him, this offseason for a top of the rotation starter. Since his overall numbers will look good. Someone will want him. Adell and Adams can compete in Spring Training to see who will be the third starter or fourth outfielder

Cat 4 Hurricane now but should be the 1st cat 1 or tropical storm to hit us since Long Beach was nearly washed of the map in 1939. Many people in the vicinity of where Angel stadium stands today were killed by the flooding and drove us to cement-in the rivers here.
We have big mountains here that have been burnt to a crisp in the last 10 years. The potential for massive land slides and runoff is huge.
We’ve very unusually had significant rain every month so far this year which helped replace some vegetation.
But if the worse scenario comes with this storm, the havoc that will be wreaked will put lives in danger..
Not to mention the Santa Ana River, the worst life losing flood potential west of the Mississippi lays just past the right field fence and parking lot of the Big A…

33 years I lived in SoCal now living in Central Florida where our Hurricane Season runs from June 1st thru November 30th. Hurricanes have a mind ofits own. The NWC can predict where it could be heading but last minute it can change direction. We have been lucky so far with El Niro causing wind shear destroying the potential storms. There are 4 systems NHC is watching.in the Atlantic.

Back to Los Angeles. Santa Ana winds velocity and torrential rain. Stay safe

Hurricanes are pretty scary. Even a side swipe means lots of rain. A friend that lives in Julian California outside of San Diego said they were told to expect as 6 inches of rain in 24 hours.

Even for us here in Florida that is a lot of rain. He said that is 2/3 of a years worth for them.

Rendon might have more value….when healthy.
But he’s just like that dude at work that calls in sick all the time and the team has to pick up the slack.
I just don’t think the Angels can count on him or his health at all.
I havn’t seen or heard much positivity around him to change my opinion.
Moose has been ok to good in all aspects,
He is there every day, contributing and being a professional…. leading by example.

MC Maybe. But he had a leg injury and had bleeding in the bone. Sounds like a good excuse to me.

And he’s had at least two surgeries trying to get back on the field.

When he plays, I like Rendon, but I don’t have the slightest issue with any fan who doesn’t.

I think people take posters negative evaluations far too seriously.

We are cursed. I Remember a great article by Jim Murray of the LA Times consoling Rick Burrelson after his arm injury.

It was something to the effect of warning anyone who might think of joining the Angels. Don’t go into the dark cellar guided only by a candle for light.

We can chalk up the injuries to bad luck, but at some point Rendon needs to do something to change his luck. Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman play every day, and none of this happens to them. If I was Rendon I’d get them both on a conference call and find out.

Now could you imagine the hate responses I’d get if I wrote something similar about Perry.

Out of the 28 Angels with 500 PAs or more at 3rd base, Rendon ranks 4th in wRC+

I don’t share most people’s disdain for Rendon, but they sure are allowed to have it.

The problem is that it took Rendon 4 years to accumulate 800+ PA with the Angels. As someone once said, “availability may be the greatest ability.”

And it’s a huge problem. It’s not like he sucks, he just can’t stay healthy. I just don’t have a negative response when I read or hear his name.

I didn’t with Upton either. Players get hurt. It’s the players who are not very good who get 600 PAs that drive me nuts. Pujols anyone?

Pujols would have been valuable at 350 PAs, but for some reason this team didn’t see it.

Im surprised Rendon is not on your list of hated Angels. He has a .150 ISO the past four years. Rendons a Punch and Judy hitter with no speed and poor defense that costs $38M a year and takes up a valuable spot on the 40-man. And he only plays 50 games a year.

Does Rendon Primary hit singles? If Schaneul, or Neto, or Schanuel has a 112 wRC+ next year, would you be happy.

Not that is the equivalent, but if the weak position link on this team has a 112wRC, this team will score a ton of runs.

However,if we have the same GM, I doubt it will make a difference.

I’m also not sure if someone who gets an extra base hit is a Punch and Judy hitter. I think we’d all be happy if Schanuel hits like that with a 400 OBP.

Yesterday you described Schanuel as a Punch and Judy hitter because his ISO was under .150 in his first 21 minor league games 40 days after being drafting. Are you now saying Rendon is not a Punch and Judy hitter with a .150 ISO in over 800 PAs with the Angels? I’m confused.

As a side note, Rendons plays only one position and his OAA is -5. Rengifo has played 6 positions and his OAA is -6 with more than twice as many attempts.

In looking at Sprint Speed, Rendon is on par with Jared Walsh and David Fletcher at 26.5 ft/sec.

In summary, Rendon is a Punch and Judy hitter with no speed and poor defense that costs $38M/yr, takes up a valuable 40-man roster spot and doesn’t play.

It’s a fair gotcha. As an it’s exactly 150. In the minor leagues Schanuel was 123.

Perhaps 150 is not the right break. But it’s probably not far off.

If you want to call Rendon’s Angel career punch and Judy, fine. If Schanuel has a 150 difference, as punchless as Rendon has been, I’d be thrilled.

First Pujols, then Rendon, those two guys completely decimated the Angels chances of being competitive. Collectively, they wasted Trout and Ohtani’s chances at playing for a winner in their prime years together. $245M to Rendon, as if Pujols taught them nothing. It’s up there for worst contract ever.

The pitching wasted Trouts years. Not Pujols.

The Angels lost seven or so front line starters to career injuries in about 18 months. I thought we finally recovered after last year, but this staff took a huge step back.

Has there ever been a harder dropoff than Rendon from 2020 to now? I know Pujols had a serious dropoff in production, but at least he was able to give the Angels a few okay seasons, even if they weren’t vintage Pujols years. Rendon on the otherhand went from MVP candidate, finishing top ten in voting three of the four years prior to 2021 (even the one year he didn’t finish top 10, he still was 11th and had an OPS over .900) prior to ’21, then to barely even able to stay on the field, and in the rare instances he does play, he struggles.

I guess Chris Davis comes to mind. Though his wasn’t as sudden as Rendon’s. Ryan Howard is another guy, but at least he was able to maintain an OPS+ of 90 or greater. Jacoby Ellsbury might be another one given he didn’t play in like any of the last three years of his contract, but he never had the peak Rendon had.
