Pirates To Promote Colin Selby For MLB Debut

By Steve Adams | August 8, 2023 at 3:55pm CDT

3:55pm: The Pirates have now made these two moves official, with right-hands Osvaldo Bido and Yerry De Los Santos optioned in corresponding moves.

11:37am: The Pirates are set to recall right-hander Colin Selby from Triple-A Indianapolis, reports Jason Mackey of  the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. They’re also planning to recall Thomas Hatch, whom they just claimed off waivers a few days ago. Both players are on the 40-man roster already.

Selby, 25, was the Pirates’ 16th-round pick back in 2018 and put himself on the prospect map with a particularly strong showing in Double-A last year, wherein he tossed 32 2/3 innings of 2.20 ERA ball with a 29.7% strikeout rate, 10.1% walk rate and 53.1% ground-ball rate. Baseball America ranked him 26th among Pirates prospects on their latest update, crediting him with three plus pitches — fastball in the upper 90s, slider in the upper 80s, curveball in the low 80s — but below-average command.

The 2023 season has been a strong one for the hard-throwing Selby. After a quick three-inning stop in Double-A, he was bumped up for his Triple-A debut, which has resulted in 30 1/3 frames of 3.86 ERA ball. He’s sporting a gaudy 30.8% strikeout rate and massive 61.2% ground-ball rate in Indianapolis, but he’s also walked 16.5% of his opponents (and plunked three as well). In his 30 1/3 innings at Triple-A, Selby has put 25 runners aboard either by way of walk or hit-by-pitch. It’s a power arsenal, but there’s some clear refinement to be done.

As for Hatch, he’ll be making his team debut and logging his first action with a team other than the Blue Jays, who designated him for assignment earlier this month. Hatch, a 2016 third-round pick, has pitched to a 5.28 ERA in 44 1/3 big league innings, fanning 21.3% of his opponents against a 12.4% walk rate.

While he’s worked primarily as a starter in Triple-A, Hatch has moved to the bullpen for the majority of his work in the upper minors this season. He’s pitched to a 4.40 ERA in 30 games — 45 innings — and notched a 27.8% strikeout rate and 10.8% walk rate. Hatch has typically kept the ball on the ground at average or better rates in Double-A and Triple-A, and this year’s 4.40 ERA in Triple-A is right in line with the 4.45 mark he’s posted in 240 2/3 total innings at that level.

I’m supportive of promoting Selby as long as Shelton doesn’t leave him in if the Braves are creamating his pitches
Shelton often leaves pitchers in for too long before he goes to the bullpen

If 2 are being promoted, 2 have to go down

Colby probably slotted as reliever(?) hasn’t started in a few years.

Hatch has started last year but most of his time has been at reliever.

knowing how Shelton operates, it will probably be one of his “ reliever games “
Either Selby or Hatch will start and the other will get into the game later

Bido isn’t a starter and should be put in the bullpen if he comes back

Sheldon will have a bullpen game because he does not have enough starting pitchers at his disposal. It is not him choosing one of “his” reliever games. Bido will be back and most likely will be used as the long guy and a swing starter .

Bido has yet to make it to the 5th inning in any of his starts and has begun to tire in the 4th inning so he’s probably better at being the long guy
But Shelton will continues pushing him out as the #5 starter because as you said, he has no other option

Technically, they have a 3-man staff. I haven’t heard anyone proclaim Falter as starter number 4 yet although one would think that’s their hope
Really, this “reliever game” approach has now lasted well over a month and frankly, it’s a testament to the organization’s beyond pathetic lack of foresight
In fact, if you’re a season ticket holder and have to sit through a reliever game, last night’s result notwithstanding, you should be particularly sickened.
I’m looking forward to the “studs on the farm” finally arriving here in ‘24 or ‘25. Until then, it’s going to largely be patchwork with a great many question marks that start with Keller
Given these last 5 starts, there should be no rush to extend him

In MK’s last 7 starts, 3 have been stellar (2runs/20IP) and a 4th was good (2runs/5.2IP). Just saying.

Are we watching the same guy. He’s had one start that he deserved a better fate, against the Phillies. He got hammered against the Brewers, Guardians, Angels and Dodgers. (Yeah, I forgot his start against the D-backs in there)
This is your ace. Your stopper
Hope he can get his cutter to cut again and that his love affair with Main Street is over.

They offered Keller a long term extension earlier in the season but he doesn’t want a “ team friendly “ contract and a deal wasn’t made

And with the way he’s pitched lately I’m not convinced he’s worth giving a big contract to.
He’s been trying for win #10 since before the AS break and his ERA has gone from 3+ to 4+ in those starts. Plus giving up more homers.
And finally during the first half, he was pitching sometimes into the 7th inning, now he’s lucky to pitch 5

Well, foresight was including Brubaker, Burrows, and Velasquez heading into the season but Brubaker never made it out of ST and Burrows started 2 games in AAA before both were done for the year. Velasquez stared off great until the lost him in his 7th start. Suddenly Ortiz and Contreras forgot how to get guys out. There were 5 of the guys expected to be pitching in the rotation right now unless Velasquez was traded like Hill was,.

No one is disputing that their proposed pitching staff suffered several setbacks that contributed significantly to their lack of success but it’s not just the pitching that has been affected
They are 3rd to last in homers, 2nd to last in batting average and 2nd to last in runs scored

By the way Keller just gave up a homer on the second pitch of the game

I was talking more about development, Robert. How is it that really, your top farm club has no answers where starters are concerned?
They’ve drafted middle infielders in the top spots for years. At last, they finally drafted a guy this year who is a stud
Priester is here. Fine. We’ll see if he’s ready over time. Bido is no starter. Ortiz was iffy all along and sorry, Contreras had a number of troubling starts last year to the point that you had to be a bit apprehensive about just how long he’d be around

Yeah, 100% right. But I had to marvel at Braves hitters in the 9th against Bednar. From Harris down, they were on every one of his pitches, and he was hitting 99 on the gun.
It was clinical, the way they approached their at bats. No bad swings. Adjusting to the increased velocity and his occasional off speed pitches. Yeah, he retired them and the Bucs won, but I understand why this team is where they are

Hope I’m wrong but these next 3 games are going to be a grind. Warm up the shuttle to Indy

I hope Keller steps up tonight and or Priester get through the lineup twice on his start. I don’t think they’ll survive 3 or 4 bullpen games in a row. I also wonder if Bido was hurt or just not loose in the 4th. Went from throwing no hit ball to what I referred to as batting practice.

Agree with you about Keller. Hope this has been a mid season funk he overcomes quickly.
I’m still trying to make an assessment about Priester. Guess that’s appropriate where a rookie is concerned. Sure would be nice to go into next season with 3 solid starts in Keller, Priester and Oviedo

Bido has never made it to the 5th inning in any of his starts. He pitches exceptionally well for the first 3 innings then opposing batters hit his pitches hard because he loses speed and location on his pitches
He’s not a starter he’s better off as a long reliever

Shelton has an excuse for everything that goes wrong with this team, I can’t stand to listen to him talk anymore
His favorite excuse for lack of offense is the players aren’t executing
No s**t sherlock, so why not explain why these players are still swinging at pitches out of the strike zone or in the dirt
Has anyone noticed that Hayes hasn’t been in the lineup on a regular basis since returning from the IL?

is it against rational thinking that pitchers aren’t permitted to throw in the bullpen to stay loose during long offensive innings?
Claiming that Bido was tightening up is just another lame excuse
Braves pitchers with their phenomenal offense don’t go out following a run barrage and start throwing grapefruits because they got “ tight “ waiting to pitch

Bido was in a great rhythm through 3. never had a lot of time to think about what was going on because he was right back out there. Suddenly had a long time to sit and think about everything too. I was listening in the car on the way home from work. I was thinking I wonder if he would be able to pick up that rhythm again and keep hammering the zone. Can’t help wondering if he wasn’t just thinking to much when he went back out in the 4th.

Someone has to tell me why Shelton uses Palacios in the leadoff position and why with Williams speed isn’t batting there instead
Williams has been drawing a decent amount of walks where Palacios tends to swing at every pitch
The logic is that your best hitters are at the top of the lineup. Palacios doesn’t meet that standard

While Shelton allows Suwinski to bat against a lefty and we’re only up by one run
        He’s 1 for his last 23

This is a prime example of how Shelton misuses the pitching staff
Bednar had already pitched in the 2 previous games having thrown a total of 40+ pitches and nearly blew his last save and game for the Bucs
There was a time not so long ago, Shelton would have used a righty bat in lieu of Suwinsk and another pitcher in lieu of Bednar

Cal Ripken didn’t need a day off, these players can relax when the season is over
Shelton is just a horrible manager

Connor Joe is uncharacteristically hot against right handed pitchers while Suwinski is in yet another one of his extended slumps yet Joe sits while Jack goes 0 for 5 with an additional team leading 2 strikeouts, one against a lefty where he swung at every pitch and none were in the strike

It’s worth repeating, Shelton is a horrible manager

I dunno. I wrote how remarkable it was that Braves hitters were on Bednar in his appearance in game 1. He got the save but they made adjustments to his heat and fouled off his off speed pitches, of which there were only 2 or 3
That said, I have no clue—none—as to why Hayes is giving the 3rd base line in the 9th inning of a close game. These are the Braves, the best hitting team in the majors and again, they hit the ball hard off of Bednar and 99 mph heat the night before
Who was the idiot that was positioning players?
That was a sickening loss and between Shelton’s decision to play Delay over Endy *and* his failure to adhere to baseball logic, 101, utterly ridiculous
As for Keller—waaaay too many pitches over the middle of the plate. This is where he gets in trouble, obviously, and the biggest change from his first half of the season I had to laugh when the Pirates color man was lauding this as “going right at ‘em” or “challenging the hitter. “
Yeah, ok. Sell those tickets, John
On the contrary, repeatedly going dead red is a prescription for big trouble, nothing more

By the time Keller was pulled after pitching only five innings he had already thrown 86 pitches
Too many of the opponents’ ABs were reaching full counts not to mention that he had given up 9 hits during those 5 innings
If not for several remarkable defensive plays, the Braves would have knocked him out of the game earlier
