Tim Anderson’s Suspension Reduced To Five Games

By Darragh McDonald | August 17, 2023 at 2:44pm CDT

White Sox infielder Tim Anderson’s six-game suspension has been reduced to five games, per a league announcement. He was going to appeal but reached a settlement with the league, eliminating the need for a hearing. He’ll begin serving his suspension tomorrow. José Ramírez of the Guardians had his three-game suspension reduces to two games, which he served this past weekend.

Both suspensions stemmed from the same incident. In the August 5 game between the Sox and Guards, Ramírez slid into second base and took umbrage with the way Anderson attempted to tag him out. “He tagged me really hard, more than needed, and his reaction was like, ‘I want to fight,'” Ramirez said, per Mike Brehm of USA Today. “And if he wants to fight, I wanted to defend myself.”

The two came to blows, with Ramirez knocking Anderson to the ground as the benches cleared. That led to the aforementioned suspensions for Anderson and Ramírez, as well as one-game suspensions for Cleveland closer Emmanuel Clase, manager Terry Francona, third base coach Mike Sarbaugh and White Sox skipper Pedro Grifol. Guardians infielder Gabriel Arias and White Sox righty Michael Kopech were also each fined an undisclosed amount.

The news won’t have a significant short-term impact on the Sox, who are well out of contention. They will have a decision to make on Anderson this winter, as they have a $14MM option for his services next year that comes with a $1MM buyout. He’s hitting a dismal .238/.285/.284 this year for a 58 wRC+ and with poor defensive grades to boot. But he hit .318/.347/.473 over the previous four seasons for a 123 wRC+, stealing 53 bases and producing 13.6 fWAR.

Elvis Andrus will likely cover shortstop for the next few days, moving over from second. Zach Remillard figures to jump into the second base job for that stretch. The Sox don’t have another obvious middle infield candidate on the active roster, so they may have to make a move before tomorrow’s game so that they at least have a bench option. Lenyn Sosa is on the 40-man roster and could perhaps be recalled, though a corresponding move would be required. Players suspended for on-field infractions continue to occupy a roster spot, so the Sox will have to play with a 25-man active roster until Anderson’s suspension is complete.

The sox must get rid of this disgrace some how if they want to recover from this. Too many issues to contend with in the clubhouse. This is a magor one that needs to be dealt with sooner rather than later. Lights out for Anderson.

I never quite got the “rolling in his grave” comment. I know it’s just a figure of speech, but it implies that the dead still know what’s going on in the world and care about it.

I’m more confused by the assumption that Jackie Robinson would be very upset with Anderson but OK with predominantly white fans using his name to slur a black player (albeit a ridiculous one).

I’m confused by predominantly white people constantly being offended for other people.

It’s not a slur at all. It is a funny joke because Tim Anderson couldn’t hold a candle to Jackie Robinson. No one complains about Ohtani being called the Japanese Babe Ruth because it’s deserved. Also, not a slur.

The Robinson family was offended by Anderson trying to compare himself to Jackie Robinson judging by their comments when he said it in 2019.

There is no comparison between what Robinson did and Anderson flipping a bat and saying he was like Robinson because he was “breaking the have fun barrier”.

          Anderson is a joke.

Anderson deserved to have other players make fun of him after that stupid comment.

What will be fascinating will be the fact that Anderson’s agents will likely ask for Dansby Swanson type money in free agency but will probably be lucky to get Orlando Arcia money

    Suspensions never should be reduced.

But they always are. The league needs to take that into consideration. Suspend the player an extra 3 days initially, to allow for the eventual reduction. If TA should be suspended for 7 days, suspend him for 10 initially. After appeal, he still sits his 7.

So, MLB handed down a suspension, then reduced it without an appeal? Basically telling people that whatever conclusion they come to, isn’t conclusive. Understand if it gets overturned on appeal, but they overturned their own ruling!

Should have gave him more games suspended for embarrassing himself in a fight he started.

Jackie Anderson, oh sorry, Tim Anderson is a highly overrated player. Always has been, and he is a hugh trouble maker. Not good for any team or baseball in general.

Tim Anderson deserves all the flak he’s getting and I like Jose Ramirez but let’s not act like he too wasn’t acting like a baby.

These two (Anderson & Ramirez) should fight as an undercard in the Roman Colosseum in front of Zuckerberg & Musk.

Is Anderson a great, or even good, player at this point? No, his ego is bloated, his defense is so-so at best (and never really has improved), he starts fights he cannot finish-literally, obviously has thin skin and now can barely hit the ball (when he is not out with an injury). AND he should have gotten a longer, not shorter, suspension after appealing. Anderson pushed an umpire, threw multiple punches and then came back on the field after being throw out of the game. Come to think of it the umpire should be suspended as well for allowing this to occur and not just running away when Anderson pushed him away.

However, this ‘Jackie’ crap is the commenter either being an ignoramus who think they are witty for parroting something said by someone else a while ago, or one just calling him ‘jackie’ because what they really want to call him is something that is unacceptable in society. Either can rationalize it all they want, they just sound simple, petty, or -worse- bigoted.
Anderson could have been a good player if his ego did not get in the way.. Is that so hard to say? It may be I guess, as simple minds need simple slogans apparently.

As a minority, I feel the need to remind you (possibly and probably a white person) that Jackie Robinson was a civil rights hero. A guy like this comparing him to Jackie Robinson is absurd and insensitive on his part, not the commentator’s part. I agree they shouldn’t be mocking him, but rather admonishing him, but it’s the right idea. He has no right to do this to Robinson’s legacy. Also, what “simple slogan” are you referring to? Slogans are generally multiple words and never actual names. You are the simple-minded ignoramus.

Sitting here talking to a friend about the Anderson situation and he said “he was suspended one less day, so Tim gets to play one more day before his career ends”. Truer words were never spoken.

Saint Jose started the whole thing by getting in Anderson’s face and waving a finger — over NOTHING. Yet, he only gets 2 days — bogus.

Does it matter who started it? Tim Anderson will now always be remembered for getting knocked out after putting up his dukes lololol

Tim is the one who squared up like he wanted to fight. Jose was just arguing and posturing – nothing uncommon. I think this should hopefully get Tim Anderson humbled and he can come back better than ever. I’m not referring to as a baseball player, but as a man.
