White Sox Claim Brent Honeywell, Select Lane Ramsey

By Mark Polishuk | August 5, 2023 at 1:34pm CDT

The White Sox added a pair of right-handers to their 40-man roster, announcing that Lane Ramsey’s contract was selected from Triple-A and that Brent Honeywell Jr. was claimed off waivers from the Padres.  Right-hander Gregory Santos was placed on the bereavement list in a corresponding move.

San Diego designated Honeywell for assignment on Wednesday, one of a few transactions made to make space for the Padres’ trade deadline acquisitions.  Honeywell has a 4.05 ERA/4.31 SIERA over 46 2/3 relief innings this season, with a solid 48.9% grounder rate but below-average strikeout (20.5%) and walk (10.2%) rates.  The righty had some of the highest hard-contact numbers in the league, and a solid 7.2% barrel rate hasn’t quite been enough to limit the damage, as Honeywell has allowed eight home runs.

These shaky numbers notwithstanding, simply getting onto the mound represented a great result for Honeywell after years of injuries.  A top-100 regular during his days as a prospect in the Rays system, Honeywell has already undergone four different surgeries on his throwing elbow, including a Tommy John procedure.  As a result, Honeywell’s MLB resume prior to this season consisted of a three-game cup of coffee with Tampa Bay in 2021, with Honeywell tossing 4 1/3 total innings.

Honeywell was a low-cost winter signing for the Padres on a split contract, and it’s safe to say both sides were probably satisfied with how the deal worked out.  It is quite possible San Diego would’ve preferred to keep Honeywell if he wasn’t out of minor league options, so with a 26-man roster crunch, the Padres had to risk losing him on a waiver claim.  It isn’t surprising that the White Sox (and probably some other teams) had an eye on a former top prospect who might finally be healthy and ready to perform, and since Chicago is out of the race, they’ll have the rest of the season to evaluate Honeywell and see if he might be in their plans for 2024.

Ramsey was a 23rd-round pick for the White Sox in the 2018 draft, and the 27-year-old is now on the verge of his debut appearance in the Show.  Now in his third season at Triple-A Charlotte, Ramsey hadn’t much success at the top minor league level, with a 5.79 ERA over 79 1/3 innings (pitching as a reliever in 70 of 72 appearances) with a 25.34% strikeout rate and an ungainly 15.36% walk rate.  Ramsey is something of a prototypical hard-throwing reliever who hasn’t quite been able to translate that velocity into control or a higher-tier strikeout rate, though the White Sox coaches will get a closer look at his live arm during his stint in the majors.

Dogbone… I’d really like to think so, but unfortunately I don’t think he’s going to. It’s like a toy for him, one he can write off his taxes. Two more pieces of garbage with high ERA’s and walk rates. This doesn’t rate as rebuilding. We’re going to have a AAA team of dfa’s and has-beens in major league uniforms until he dies. TA, Robert, Vaughn, Cease and Eloy will be begging to be traded.

Reinsdorf won’t sell. He’ll die as team owner then whoever he leaves it to will have to decide whether to keep the team or sell it

Watched Honeywell in ST and all season as a Padre. He isn’t “the guy” you need but he qualifies as a good addition to a team with a lot of needs.

Don’t see the problem. Someone has to pitch for the Sox and this is better than rushing a prospect. If Honeywell sucks, he was practically free, Sox just lose his salary. If he’s solid, it’s one less spot to fill. In a season that’s already lost, there is no downside here.

San Diego’s “City Connect” unis have to be my fave in the sport right now. Looks like they are sponsored by a cumbia group.

Those colors belong in a box of Froot Loops or a bag of Starburst, not on a baseball uniform.
Of course as a Rockies fan I have to admit that their license plate jerseys are about as bad.

Whoever “designed” those childish SD City Connect unis, and thought that yellow lettering on white jerseys would be readable, should go back to kindergarten color charts.

Nothing beats the Padres brown and yellow dirty diaper uniforms. They’re like classics from the bottom of an old diaper pale.

Agree. Used to be a ticket holder, the weekend package, for about 10 years. Didn’t renew and haven’t been to a game for several years. Jerry’s loyalty combined with the front office decisions is killing this team. Sell the team Jerry. We deserve better.

Palehose: It won’t be long before the Sox ticket sales will rival those of the A’s. Reinsdorf and Fisher should be forced to sell their teams for indifference and their refusal to at least try to have competitive teams. But since the owners pay manfred’s salary, that’s not going to happen

More ‘Meh’ from the Sox, but then again ‘meh’ is what they sell now. Id rather see guys like Yolbert Sanchez up and see what he can do for the rest of the season, or Remillard playing second.. Why is Adrus on this club still? Why is Grandal? I get salary and what not, but really this should be a time to see what the Sox really have in their minors that maybe are diamonds in the rough (heck maybe they would find more guys like Remillard, (yknow guys that drive runs in score run, get timely hits, make good plays, etc). Why are the punchless vets still on this roster?! Who are the Sox trying to fool?! Grandal and Anderson are two guys that should have been moved.. for whatever (maybe a bag of baseballs). The fact they they were likely shopped but no one wanted to pay either indicates more ineptitude by Hahn and CO (i.e. over pricing the..ahem… ‘talent’), or no one wanted them at all, in which case some should be just flat out dumped.. salary be damned. Bring up the youngsters as really only a better draft pick is what this pathetically run org should be hoping for now. That and they really need to weed out the clubhouse cancers, as that has to be a one of the reasons why this club is flailing (aside from an inept ‘bottom-dollar’ manager in Ventur…. Sorry, Grifol sorry, hard to really tell the two apart at this point)…

You can’t put this on Grifol. He was handed an overrated roster (typical of the White Sox), a system that can’t develop solid players, and a bunch of promises.

I’m hope you’re right, but I’m also sure that people thought that about Ventura too (especially with the roster he inherited at the time). I just have seen enough Sox baseball after 30 years to know who is a manager, and who is a guy pretending. Again I hope you are right, but I don’t think so.

Can’t wait to hear Steve and Jason tell us how great Anderson is doing the last 3 weeks. Must be Jerry and Kenny are telling them what to say. How about Anderson has over 350 at bats and 1 homerun. Has anybody ever had 1 homerun in 500 at bats in one season or would it be a new record.

Yes, several players have had 1 or less Homeruns in over 500 ABs. And Anderson has been looking more like himself, taking outside pitches to right and pulling inside pitches. His stats show that.
