Blue Jays Hire DeMarlo Hale As Associate Manager

By Darragh McDonald | November 13, 2023 at 2:18pm CDT

The Blue Jays announced that they have hired DeMarlo Hale as associate manager, working under manager John Schneider.

It’s a homecoming for Hale, 62, who was with the Jays as bench coach from 2013 to 2018. He then went to the Atlanta organization for the 2019 and 2020 seasons, working the first year in the minors and then joining the major league coaching staff in the second.

For the past three seasons, Hale has been the bench coach for the Guardians, working under Terry Francona. That has occasionally given Hale managerial opportunities on an interim basis, as Francona has had to step away at times due to health issues.

The Guardians are making some shifts to their staff this year, which will be their first without Francona in quite some time. He is stepping aside and the club hired Stephen Vogt to take his place, with Craig Albernaz also coming aboard as major league field coordinator. Zack Meisel of The Athletic reported last week that Hale was still deciding whether or not to return to Cleveland but it appears he will make the return trip to Toronto.

The Jays have also been doing some shuffling on their staff. Don Mattingly was the bench coach in 2023 and will continue in that role next year, though the club recently added “offensive coordinator” to his title. It isn’t exactly clear what Hale’s associate manager title will cover, but it’s possible some of Mattingly’s bench coach duties might fall to Hale if Mattingly is going to be doing some hitting coach-type stuff. Mattingly is also a candidate for the open managerial vacancy in Milwaukee, so perhaps Hale gives the Jays a fallback if the Brewers end up plucking Mattingly away.

These titles are getting laughable. Dude is a bench coach.

Agreed unless Mattingly doesn’t leave as bench coach. Title may have been needed for him to leave Cleveland. Just guessing though.

        dewey – Mattingly’s contract expired.

I think MLB is going the way of Ben & Jerry’s, allowing staff to choose their own titles.

Once Alex Cora decides he no longer wants to manage, he will probably select for his Red Sox front office title “Executive Senior President Of Not Quite Ethical Methods To Gain A Competitive Advantage”.

I’m not a hater by any means, so my question is serious: why do you call him that? He was a very good major league hitter, but what has be done to earn that praise in your mind?

Mattingly was not a good hitter. He was a great two way player who could do it all but steal bases. His back is the only reason why he’s not in the HOF. His hitting in his prime was as good as the game then had.

I could write a comment on this site such as “Sunny days are nice” and some jerkweed would dig down deep and look for a reason to write a stupifyingly ignorant reply. Oh well have a nice day Sonny.

He’s a traitor to the Guardian organization. At least Cleveland will get draft compensation from Toronto for taking their bench coach

Thank you. The title then is likely due to Mattingly still being there. This is protection for when he leaves but it could be awkward if he stays.

Is this said tongue in cheek or seriously? He was let go by the Indians. Picked up by the Jays. How in the world do you think he is a traitor? Maybe, the Indians were the traitors by cutting him loose after 3yrs of great coaching?

@TennVol: Cleveland didn’t cut him loose, they gave him a choice to go or stay. I’m sorry to see him leave (but definitely not calling him a traitor).

Was wondering if he’d come back to ATL to replace EY Sr. (1B coach) as EY went with Wash to LAA, since he did during the ’20 season, when EY Sr. sat it out. I guess we have our answer.

Mattingly really hasn’t done much as a manager. But he still is better than Marmol in St.Louis. Probably not worse than Boone in NY.

Questions that will never be answered:

    Where is my mind?
    What does the fox say?
    What is love?
Where did Cotton Eyed Joe come from and where did he go?
What will we do with a drunken sailor?
    What rhymes with “hug me?”
    Where is Scooby Doo?
    Could you be loved?
How many licks does it take to get to the Tootsie Roll center of a Tootsie Pop?
How much wood could a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?
    What’s the meaning of Stonehenge?
Why didn’t the White Sox just guarantee years 9 and 10 to Manny Machado if reaching 550 PA’s in his age 34 season will be such an easy feat?
    What is an Associate Manager?

Associate manager sounds like a title for someone who is going to replace the manager after said unfortunate manager succumbs to illness or accident.

It’s not seasonal depression, it’s the off-season where nothing happens and the only thing to do is wait for Spring Training or speculate as to whether some coach has the ability to (for example) tell Triston Casas “Hey swing the f***ing bat. You’re not patient, you’re passive. You have elite bat speed. You’re a terrible defender and you’re not going to get any faster as you get older. You’re going to age quicker than most 23 year olds, so swing for all you got so you can still have 3/$75 left on your contract when your production falls off a cliff when you turn 32” or not

Are you sure it’s not seasonal depression? It could be baseball withdrawals though mixed with being bipolar.

DeMarlo has quietly had a nice ling career in baseball, managing in the minors and coaching in the big leagues. He does deserve a chance to manage a big league club, but he is very valuable nonetheless

Hale has been around too long to be given some hack title like that. He deserves a chance at running a team and should have been interviewed by the Astros. Frankly, I’d pay to see him take over for Alex Cora.

I was really hoping to see him replace Marmol in St. Louis, it somehow that idiot was retained. At least Hale was hired as a manager yet, so he could still be an option when Oli is eventually let go.
