Giants Agree To Deals With Daulton Jefferies, Yoshi Tsutsugo

By Anthony Franco | December 8, 2023 at 7:24pm CDT

Daulton Jefferies is in agreement on a deal with the Giants, the right-hander announced this morning. Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle confirms it’s a minor league pact with an invitation to Spring Training. Additionally, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports that first baseman Yoshi Tsutsugo has agreed to terms with San Francisco (X link). It seems fair to presume that’s also a minor league deal with a non-roster invite.

Jefferies sticks in the Bay Area. A Berkeley product, he was selected by the A’s with the 37th pick of the 2016 draft. Jefferies made his big league debut with one appearance in 2020. He pitched five times the following season and on eight occasions in 2022. In 14 career outings (10 starts), he has worked to a 5.75 ERA through 56 1/3 frames. He has a middling 15.2% strikeout rate while walking fewer than 6% of opponents.

The 28-year-old has lost most of the last two seasons to injury. He underwent thoracic outlet surgery in June 2022 before requiring a Tommy John procedure that September. Oakland ran him through waivers and off the 40-man roster last offseason. Jefferies missed all of last season and elected minor league free agency at year’s end. He’ll get a look in camp with former Oakland skipper Bob Melvin. Jefferies still has an option remaining, so the Giants could freely send him to Triple-A even if he earns a 40-man roster spot.

Tsutsugo, who recently turned 32, spent time in the San Francisco system this year. He signed with the Giants out of independent ball in August, playing in 17 games between Double-A and Triple-A. Tsutsugo, who hit .197/.291/.339 over 640 big league plate appearances from 2020-22, had posted a .249/.380/.432 line with Texas’ top minor league affiliate in the first half of last season.

Sucks is putting it strongly, as there are a lot of decent and quality players on the roster. Not the kind of players you can expect to carry a team — hence why they’ve been so hellbent on signing some star players — but the roster has depth.

My point is that every post about a minor league signing gets lazy comments joking that it’s the big signing the Giants have been missing. It was funny the first dozen times, and now it’s funny in how predictable the joke has become. Farhan has absolutely earned criticism, but I always appreciate when someone puts a little effort rather than regurgitate the same joke ad nauseum.

PS Bochy is the man, and I’m happy for him and Rangers fans

Is still funny in that way punching yourself in the head is funny. Farhan can’t get it done. He has no respect in the league. Boot him out now and be done with it. The owners are trash too and cheap and trying to make a profit instead of win, but farhan isn’t even able to succeed in the sad pathetic way he’s been touted as being able to succeed. This team has zero stars, one really good young pitcher and nothing else. Not a single prospect (as fun as they were to watch during the otherwise boring season last year) has any signs of being a star player. This team will completely lose the attention of the casual fans soon, and worse they won’t gain new forever fans like they did with Bonds and Kent and Nen when I was a kid. They have no one that excites those kids into loving baseball. It’s really sad. The Johnson family are terrible and farhan is inept. Time to make a change

Ehhhh your take has some good points and some not so accurate points. You may be right that there aren’t any young up and coming stars on the roster right now and if they don’t start signing and drafting stars and winning ball games then young fans will lose interest. But the owners are actually great, and have given Farhan the green light to spend whatever he wants ever since they brought him in. Not the owners fault guys have refused to sign with the Giants, wouldn’t say going after Stanton, Harper, Judge, Correa and now Ohtani is the owners being cheap. But the biggest mistake they made was letting Bochy go.

You’re not completely wrong, but I think you’re taking things to extremes and painting with a wide brush. Farhan and the Giants have clearly tried to spend some money and make splashes. At some point, they need to succeed, but I can’t in good faith say the owners are cheap and Farhan is inept. And while the farm hasn’t produced as much as it should, it’s also not completely hopeless. Kyle Harrison has legit ace potential, and Patrick Bailey’s defense alone is enough for him to last a decade-plus in the Majors.

After five years and two years removed from a crazy 107-win season, it’s fair to expect the franchise to be in a better spot. But after inheriting an expensive, again roster and losing Buster Posey unexpectedly, I think Farhan & co deserve another year or two. The prospects he drafted are starting to come up, and get a few more opportunities to make a splash in free agency. His seat should feel hot, but I think it’s a little too soon to fully cut him loose

So you don’t consider All-Stars Alex Cobb or Camilo Doval star players? Or Logan Webb, who finished (a distant, but still) second place in the Cy Young voting? Patrick Bailey has shown flashes of brilliance behind the dish. Hard to take any of your points seriously when you make sweeping generalizations about a team’s “lack of stars.”

What has made San Francisco such an undesirable place to play? This is from the outside looking in but San Fran has always been known as a world class city,The Giants have a winning tradition I know Bochy and Sabean are gone. Correa wanted to come but the Giants and the Mets dodged a bullet on that one. But failing to land Judge,Harper,or Othani is so confounding. Is it a clubhouse thing? Is ownership meddlesome? I just don’t get why they can’t get somebody to play there. I get Judge wanting to stay a Yankee but dollars are dollars.

I’m genuinely not trying to do the politics thing, but San Francisco has become one of the nastiest cities over the years. I go a few times a year for work and 10+ years ago I loved it. Now it’s just gross, sad, and not at all a place I enjoy spending time. Idk how much that is relevant, but it’s true of SF more than any other major city I’ve been to.

The Giants are a team made completely of depth. They have Major League talent at virtually every position, but the problem is that a team full of 1-2 WAR players is a team that will fight to play .500 ball. The upside is that if they can grab a couple stars, that depth becomes an asset. As a tertiary trait, the depth shines; as the one and only trait, the depth is unremarkable.

Yes every team makes these kinds of moves, but they do more than others and seem to think that just signing a ton of marginal guys is better than a few good ones. Like the entire outfield they signed last year that sucked along with the multiple starters who can’t go 5 innings or pitch well.

Right. Other teams have actual stars and talent and exciting young dynamic players to tout while they make these nothing signings behind the scenes. Two guys who will never have a positive impact on the big league club, but that’s all giants fans have. Year after year. It’s a depressing joke

Part of the reason their payroll is currently this high is because they’ve signed almost exclusively short-term free agents. They’re not saddled with decade-long contracts that’ll shape their future acquisitions, they chose to spend at higher AAVs on short deals to augment their roster while the farm develops. The old guard of Posey, Belt, Crawford, etc had one last hurrah in 2021 but the farm wasn’t ready to replenish the Major League roster. Rather than follow up 107 wins by sitting on their hands and letting payroll drop, they made short-term additions to bridge the gap. It didn’t work out so well, but they avoided a full-scale rebuild that Giants ownership is against. Agree or disagree with that approach, but it’s why the team has a fairly sizable payroll right now but has virtually nothing on the books a year or two from now

Hi cainer18, thanks for being basically the only voice of reason and intelligence on this thread. I was busy yesterday and didn’t get a chance to comment, plus it’s getting so tiresome fighting back the negativity and repetitive pablum these trolls toss out over and over and over. They don’t have one original comment. So thank you for understanding the complexity of the situation.

Sabean and Evans left the farm basically barren (except for Doval) and we we are finally seeing Zaidi’s picks come up. He’s made some bad picks too but Bailey is amazing and I hope his concussion has cleared. Harrison, Whisenhunt, Black, Birdsong all look exciting too.

I do think ownership didn’t want Zaidi to tank since he arrived, so we’ve fallen out of the top 10 picks where the best talent is and kept the major league club fairly competitive but in retrospect it probably would have been better to tank for a few years and get top picks. Although the draft is a crap shoot.

I really hope our kids continue to shine and Z can sign a star or two, and we start to gel. It would be so nice to shut the repetitive trolls up. Thanks for what you wrote cainer18, you get it.

Better sign top 3 free agents or this season is a bust. La has so much money it’s not funny. Now they have how many former mvp’s??? The tax threshold needs to be changed or la will get every great player they want.

Giants have as much money as anyone. They own their stadium and have a very little payroll. There’s no excuse to run this team like the A’s, but of course Farhan learned from the destroyer of baseball, Billy Beane, and now Bob Melvin is the manager.

As someone mentioned money ball is dead, but was it ever even alive? How many WS have the A’s played in the past 2 decades? How about the Rays?

I don’t believe anything is going to change for the Giants until Zaidi is gone. What player wants to play on a team doing the crap the Giants have been doing since he arrived? This is just like the Trent Balke years the 49ers had. No one wants to play for GMs like that. Look at how the 49ers team changed with they finally showed Balke the door. This is what the Giants need to do with Zaidi!

Agree. It’s an insult to the fans that the only thing Farhan has done in the off season is signing two players that only makes the team worst. And for those who say there’s still a lot of time to sign players, well, the problem is that teams have been making moves early. I’m not talking about Ohtani. It would’ve been a mistake to spend so much $$ on just one player anyway and we also know Ohtani was not going to sign with SF. There are many holes to fill. Now there are not many players available. Snell, Bellinger, etc. won’t sign with a team like the giants either. They should’ve focused on good cheaper free agents. If the fans go to the ballpark, that’s their problem. So next season the giants are going to be fighting for last place.

I hate Billy Beane for Moneyball. Of course, Farhan worked under him and now runs this team like the pathetic A’s. They own their stadium. They have very little payroll on the books. They have as much money as anyone else. Pathetic!!!!
