Giants Exploring Trade Market For Shortstops

By Steve Adams | December 19, 2023 at 12:09pm CDT

The Giants have been exploring the trade market for a potential shortstop upgrade, reports Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle, who adds that the team’s recent signing of Tom Murphy to a two-year deal could lead to former top catching prospect Joey Bart being moved Some combination of Bart, young pitching and/or outfield talent could conceivably be used to add the desired help at shortstop.

With Brandon Crawford becoming a free agent for the first time in his career, top prospect Marco Luciano currently resides atop the Giants’ depth chart at shortstop. Casey Schmitt, who made his MLB debut this past season at age 24, is another option at the position, as is 26-year-old Tyler Fitzgerald, who also made his debut in 2023. The Giants have begun to use Fitzgerald more frequently at other positions in the minors, however.

Suffice it to say, it’s an inexperienced group. Luciano has the highest ceiling of the group, but the 22-year-old hit just .231/.333/.308 with 17 strikeouts in 45 plate appearances during last year’s MLB debut and struggled in Triple-A, too, where he slashed .309/.321/.418 with a 36% strikeout rate. Luciano only turned 22 in September, so some struggles at the top minor league level and especially in the big leagues aren’t exactly cause for full-scale alarm bells to sound.

That said, those struggles also suggest that Luciano could benefit from some further development time in Triple-A. Giants president Farhan Zaidi said last month that organization was hopeful Luciano could seize the role but also noted the importance of having some insurance. Considering Schmitt hit just .206/.255/.324 through 90 games in his own debut while Fitzgerald has just 34 MLB plate appearances, a more established option would be a sensible acquisition.

Slusser speculatively lists Ha-Seong Kim of the division-rival Padres and Milwaukee’s Willy Adames as options, though it’s not clear the Giants have had meaningful discussions on either. Both would be one-year stopgaps; Kim has a mutual option for the 2025 season, and Adames is entering his final year of arbitration.

Mutual options, it should be noted, are almost never exercised by both parties. Kim won’t have six years of MLB service even if/when he declines his end of the 2025 option, but MLBTR confirmed at the time of his signing that he’ll still be a free agent when the contract is up. Adames, meanwhile, is hardly a lock to be moved at all. Even as his free agency draws near, the Brewers are still planning to contend in 2024 and would likely only move him if it meant acquiring MLB-ready talent in return.

There are other options to consider. The Twins seem likely to trade Kyle Farmer this offseason, given their crowded infield mix. Zaidi is plenty familiar with Farmer, who was drafted by the Dodgers, where Zaidi previously served as general manager. The Reds, Guardians, Cardinals and Rays all have ample infield talent as well. Not all of those teams are in need of a catcher specifically, although including Bart (and perhaps others) is of course just one of many paths the Giants could take to addressing the issue.

The 27-year-old Bart was the No. 2 overall draft pick back in 2018. He’s appeared in parts of four big league seasons but posted an anemic .219/.288/.335 batting line with a 35.4% strikeout rate. Bart, who’ll be out of options in 2024, is a .274/.357/.434 hitter in 554 Triple-A plate appearances. He’s been leapfrogged on the depth chart by another former first-rounder, Patrick Bailey, who batted just .233/.285/.359 as a rookie but also graded out as arguably the best defensive catcher in MLB.

    Are you listening, Steve?

You can probably get a 45 FV prospect while eating no salary for Lindor, given the price of 29 yo 6 WAR SS’s last offseason.

Make it a real rebuild and trade Alonso as well.

So the Mets should trade arguably the best shortstop in the majors for a 45 FV and salary relief? All this after they payed down the salary’s of Verlander and Scherzer to get better returns.

If you could get luciano and harrison for lindor, would you? Would the giants? Probably no to both, but its fun to speculate.

the giants would not do that trade ever. You are basically plucking the 2 young guys that they are planning on building around – which is one of the reasons to trade for guys at the position and moving them for a more expensive older guy – it is kind of the opposite of what the plan seems to be moving forward

No, mostly because of Harrison. I think Luciano will end up in the outfield.

Anyway, I still propose that the Giants and Cardinals match up extremely well. Giants deal one of their top young arms (not Harrison) plus Matos, Ramos and Bart (the throw ins) for Tommy Edman to play SS for SF. Might even take a little more to the Cards to make it happen, but St, Louis really needs some young arms b/c Gibson and Lynn are embarrassing short-timers..

edman has been a discussion since mid last year – farhan has been interested but I think the cards have been hesitant to move him. FWIW edman actually has almost triple the trade value of lindor, I think people tend to overvalue the guys they watch all the time.

More value according to BTV? Come on, there’s no team that will give more in return for Edman than for Lindor, that’s not even reasonable, Lindor’s remaining deal isn’t even that high now considering that he’s easily top 3 SS in MLB overall. There’s 8-272 left, which is fairly reasonable when you look at other deals from last year.
I know the trade would never happen, but honestly, I think SF easily benefits more than NY over the next 4 years if it did. After that, maybe one of the two pan out as a high-end player.

yes look it up on BTV, lindor has a median value of 3.5 and edman has a median value of 12.1. depending on what high or low number you feel like taking edman has at least double the trade value

That’s why BTV isn’t taken seriously by many. The only GMs in baseball that would value Edman over Liindor, would be because they’re so handcuffed financially that they couldn’t afford Lindor. Lindor is only a year and half older, and last two years has almost double the WAR, has WRC+ 123 to 100 over Edman, and frankly if Edman wasn’t also excellent defensively, he would barely be a starter. Sorry, but Edman in a trade might bring back a system’s 5-10 prospect, where Lindor would likely bring back a top 100 and another system top 5.

I like the idea of trading for Tommy Edman or a Corbin Burnes/Willy Adames deal. Edmann can play the outfield and be in two platoons if Lee struggles vs LHP’s & Luciano struggles vs RHP’s due his Edmann being a switch hitter.

However, Adames is a guy that’s only ever player SS/DH, and he’s not bad at all at SS. If they went this route, and landed Burnes as well, I think they’d need to sign Matt Chapman given that Milwaukee had an even worse lineup than SF, and Brian Anderson’s 83 OPS+ at 3B would be replaced nicely by JD Davis, while Bryce Turang’s 63 OPS+ could be replaced by Casey Schmitt. Obviously someone like Birdsong or Whisenhunt would need to be included to get Burnes in as well, but let’s not forget that both of those Milwaukee stars are Free Agents after 2024, and 1yr of a guy isn’t the same as 2 or 3.

With Adames, I’d believe the hope would be for Luciano to become 60-70% of Tatis’s RF in San Diego, which also frees up Slater to be involved in the deal. Something like Whisenhunt, Davis, Slater, Conforto, and Schmitt for Burnes & Adames.
Then sign Shota Imanaga & Matt Chapman and go into 2025 with a rotation of Burnes/Webb/Harrison/Black/Imanaga, and a lineup of C-Bailey, 1B Wade, 2B Estrada, 3B Chapman, SS Adames, LF Haniger, CF Lee and RF Luciano. Yaz can platoon with Haniger or Luciano, depending on who’s worse vs same sided pitching.

The alternative is to move Tristen Beck & Keaton Winn for 1yr of Tommy Edmann, and use him as a double platoon in CF/SS. Not as flashy, but much more likely/practical given St Louis ljust lost Wainwright yet the average age of their rotation got OLDER. Beck & Winn are like 28 & 26 and showed success at the bigs in spot starts/long relief last year, and I imagine Ray Black is lined up to be the 2024 season’s Kyle Harrison.

Next year’s FA class isn’t great, and $50m+ just came off the roster, with another $55m coming off next year’s so adding $100m to this year’s roster would make sense given there won’t be any Yamamoto’s or Chapman’s in next year’s class, just Soto, Burnes, Adames, etc, but I feel it will be an even bigger drop off from the Top FA to the 5th best FA & to the 10th best & so on compared to this year

Edmann only has 1yr remaining on his deal, no?? I would assume his positional flexibility & switch hitting is something ANY manager would love to have available, but I’d think a 30HR/30double GG 6WAR SS with 8yrs remaining in his prime would have twice as much value than Edmann, no? That contract will balance out as inflation increases league wide, just as $50m in the 90’s was like $150m today

I guess arguably, now means a lot of people would argue with you about.

I wouldn’t make that deal and Lindor definitely has more value, but Lindor is arguably top 3 maybe and given age, production, price is probably well outside of that.

Lol. The Mets don’t need to rebuild. If Alonso leaves, Lindor is still a draw and provides surplus value. Let the season play out, continue extension talks, trade him at the deadline if the Mets are out of it.

        2023 Adames: 217/310/407

We *cannot* have both out there. Adames is the only one with value. Both can defend at SS. Trade Adames and gear up for 2025.

Except that Brice has NO power or any signs that it will ever develop. Adames is also a really good shortstop. Turang shouldn’t even play there if Wily is traded. He’s just not got the skills.

Turang certainly struggled as a rookie, but that doesn’t mean he’s doomed to mediocrity. He showed some pop and on-base abilities in the minors. At peak, he’s probably a left-hitting Edman.

Milwaukee’s problem, though, is that they don’t have any infielders. They already don’t have a third baseman. Trading Adames would drop them down another infielder—unless they were to receive a serviceable infielder in return and if Tyler Black is ready to contribute.

      Lol. Complete bust.

He had a bit of a sophomore slump but no way any knowledgeable fan could say he was a bust much less a complete bust.

      2022: 136g 3.4fWAR 4.9bWAR 102wRC+ 102 OPS+
      2023: 150g 2.8fWAR 3.8bWAR 96 wRC+ 95 OPS+

      2022: 24.2% K, 3.9% BB
      2023: 20.4% K, 6.8% BB

I would view that as a typical 2nd year adjustment period and potential for a very good next few seasons.

But impossible to call that a bust.

Lottery Pick? Ha! OP was on to something, Luciano might at least start the conversation, but if the Red Sox eat any salary it’ll def cost the Giants more. A finally healthy Story could be quite a threat again if his swing timing is back, especially with a fresh start after two injured seasons in Boston… Defensively his arm is as strong as ever; despite missing 2/3 of the season he still finished with some of the top SS metrics in the league.

Or, OR, we could let Schmitt and Luciano play in what is most likely a non-competitive year against the Dodgers and Dbacks, and see what we have in our young core. Done with this “sell the farm” nonsense when all Farhan has been tasked with the past 6 years is repairing the damage done to it by Bobby Evans.

Agree with the premise of letting the young guys play but Luciano and Schmitt holding down SS and Lee in CF means the young pitchers will suffer tremendously with their Defense. Not ideal. Adames fits well as a stop gap here for SS defense.

It’s a little rough to call out Evans for stinking but claim Luciano is the core of the future. Marco was his big international pool signing, correct?

From what I saw, neither are busts. Harrison especially. But I don’t love shoving Casey and Luciano out there near everyday. That’s .730 OPS from the entire left side of the infield for the season with suspect D at SS. CS had no plate discipline at SDSU, AA or SF, I think he’s a platoon infielder on a decent team.

I’ve been wondering why Anderson hasn’t generated a little more buzz this offseason. The shortstop class is weak, as is second base, and Anderson can be had at a relatively low cost I imagine.
Just from numbers perspective and knowing nothing else, I would be interested in possibly slotting him in at third for the Cubs, I think a motivated Tim Anderson could be a dangerous weapon.

Any trade with Joey Bart as the centerpiece won’t fetch a meaningful upgrade. A high floor veteran like Kyle Farmer or Ramon Urias makes the most sense and should command a mid level prospect and a lottery ticket type.

IMO, the giants lineup with a shortstop upgrade is decent enough to leave alone. Zaidi now needs to pivot to upgrading the rotation in free agency. The farm system is middling even if they don’t trade from it.

Would Farmer have enough value to get that mid-level prospect plus Bart? If the Twins could get a return along those lines, and then could attach that prospect or another guy at a similar level in a trade to get rid of Vázquez’ contract, leaving Bart as their second-string catcher, that could make quite a bit of sense.

Yes, but I don’t think Bart has any trade value. Farmer’s 2023 production amounts to a roughly 4 win improvement over what the Giants received from their shortstops. His salary is hardly outrageous. The Giants should be relying on signings to upgrade the rotation in particular, but the free agent class at shortstop is certainly weak enough to justify a trade.

Tiruang will play short for MIL and just because you keep calling Winn a “spot starter” doesn’t make it factual. The lost Woodruff and are probably trading Burns too. First off, the Reds have 1 catcher better, Stephenson, and he didn’t have a good year last year. The Reds have 7! starters for the infield. Can’t do anything about that but trade from your strength to help your weakness. Just because Winn only made a few starts, doesn’t mean he’s a spot starter, it means Gabe Kapler was an idiot. When I mentioned DLC, I also said upgrade the pitching offer, i.e. Harrison.

Well if you are looking for a freebie, you obviously need to look elsewhere. According to BTV, it would take Whisenhunt AND Winn to get it done. 5.8 WAR shortstops with .351 OBP, 17-HR, 38-SB and gold glove defense don’t exactly grow on trees, but go off. A spot starter and a backup outfielder OR a failed catcher doesn’t get that. If the Giants aren’t going all-in this year, they are probably better off with a cheaper 1-2 WAR SS. Their choice.

Ortiz is a plus (possibly double plus) defender at a premium position and has excellent bat-to-ball skills, which gives him a really high floor. He’d be an immediate upgrade at SS for some teams.

The Giants need a place holder, not a long term solution. Amed Rosario,Nick Ahmed, Kevin Newman all could hold the job until Luciano is ready

The star power of DLC says no, and the Reds don’t want to spend that kind of money on a long term contract, but if any pitcher can succeed in that park, it’s Logan Webb.

Giants have Luciano, Schmitt, and Fitzgerald as potential players for shortstop, why not just get Tim Anderson on a cheap one-year deal, I say cheap because he doesn’t have leverage for more money, and just let the rookies play out 2024 to see who gets the job in 2025. Giants don’t lose prospects in a trade and only pay a low price on one year for Anderson.

Because (1) Tim Andrerson can’t hit, (2) Tim Anderson can’t field, (3) word is, Tim Anderson is a clubhouse cancer.

All true, can’t say anything about his clubhouse demeanor, but he’s got a lot of upside, especially since he’s not a homerun guy, and even as of 2022, he was pretty good. There’s more upside to him I think than many might think. As I watched him this past season, he’s had his flashes of being great again. Will probably benefit from not playing for the White Sox.

The guy who’s the perfect fit for their roster and many other teams too is Tommy Edman of STL:. He switch hits, can play the middle of the diamond (SS, 2nd, CF) his splits show a slightly stronger RRH. Acquiring him wouldn’t be cheap, the young players STL would love take the SS and CF jobs haven’t..

There’s not an industry consensus that Luciano can actually stick at SS long term as he continues to grow. In the limited action I saw in person/tv of him he actually looked better than I anticipated. In a perfect world, Schmidt’s finds some sort of plate discipline and takes the SS job sliding Luciano to 3rd. Between the pandemic and some injuries Luciano just hasn’t played as much as you’ve hoped. That said for 2023 a LHH middle infielder who can play SS is needed. At times Estrada has slid over to SS but he’s a far better 2nd baseman.

Joey Bart is a guy in search of a new home so i can see why his is brought up in the article. When drafted he had the floor of a back up catcher and that’s where he is at the moment, just not with the Giants who just signed Tom Murphy.. 2023 Rule 5 pick Sabol now goes to AAA and catches full time, his bat was ahead of his glove in 2023.

I don’t know the status of SF catching depth. Most teams prefer their catchers for the season including depth are with the team for Spring Training. We saw in 2023 how SF’s catching depth evaporated a month into the season. This would be trading him at his rock bottom value. Zero risk taking him into to spring in case SF suffers any injury or another team has injury creating a fit for him.

Ha-Seong Kim is their answer. The Padres do not value him has evidenced by numerous moves. His teammates don’t respect him, as evidenced by the comments made by Xander Bogaerts.

Since he’s in his last year and will not stick around, the Padres should try to get a couple of prospects now.

If Giants are talking to the Brewers about Adame and there has been talk about moving Caleb Burnes (I would like him as a Giant) one would assume that means the Brewers are rebuilding (Counsel gone as a manager as well). Why not pursue Yelich as well for the Giants??? Especially if Bellinger is off the table. Brewers would be happy to get out of that contract. We can add a couple OF prospects not named Matos and would you Brew fans take a Slater or Yaz with a couple hitting prospects for Yelich? What do you need for Burnes?

I think the writer may have been referring to the 36% strikeout rate instead of the 309 BA. However the way it was written was poor.

My first thought is that Farhan might be willing to take on Bogaerts or Machado contracts. Preller would gladly throw in Ha-Seong if Farhan would take Machado off Padre books. Nice way to dump Bart too.

Baez for an ice cream cone. He can play good D and maybe a change of scenery will fix his bat. Okay…not fancy ice cream maybe just some grocery store brand chocolate stuff.

A lot of Baez suggestions. If San Fran thought they could get the best out of Baez (big if), and is willing to take the contract (bigger if), get Detroit to attach prospects to the deal. 2025-ready prospects. Just to stomach Baez.

Why not just put Estrada at SS? He’s played around a 100 games at SS. 2nd would be easier to fill.

Idk if it’s been mentioned here yet but there were some substability reports around the trade deadline that the Giants coveted Vaughn Grissom. Unfortunately I don’t think it’s a fit for either team…unless it’s part of a 3 teamer…bc the Braves would want Webb or Harrison in return. I don’t think the Giants have enough pitching to start shedding any of it.

The Giants need to stop bringing in these mediocre players who take up ABs and playing time from their young prospects. They have Luciano, Schmitt and Fitzgerald who can all play SS or 3B along with JD Davis and Wilmer Flores. The latter two aren’t the best defensively but they are capable and they provide a veteran presence on the left side of the infield if the prospects need a break. Give the kids a real chance.

Schmitt got into 90 games. While that’s not enough to give up on him, it certainly qualifies as getting a chance. With that opportunity he was not good with the bat. He had a wRC+ of 59, a whopping 41% below league average. He was given a decent chance and played himself out of a starting role. He doesn’t need ML ABs, he needs more development in Sac.

The Giants can’t rely on Luciano and Fitzgerald alone. Flores is a SS only in an emergency, and I’d cringe to see Davis playing any significant number of games there. I am hoping Luciano seizes the opportunity and takes the starting role, but they need a veteran in place as insurance.

You stink at writing, Adams. “Too” shouldn’t have a comma before it; it’s not the sixties anymore. “Meanwhile” has to come at the start of a sentence; it can’t be in the middle, set off with commas.
