The White Sox have signed right-hander Jake Cousins to a minor league deal, according to his transactions tracker at MLB.com. He will presumably receive an invitation to major league Spring Training.
Cousins, 29, has 51 games of major league experience, all of those coming with the Brewers over the past three years. His results were quite good in the first two of those years but the most recent campaign was a struggle. Over 2021 and 2022, he tossed 43 1/3 innings with a 2.70 earned run average. His 35.3% strikeout rate was quite strong, though it also came with a concerning 14.7% walk rate.
In 2023, he pitched 9 1/3 innings for Milwaukee, striking out seven batters but issuing 10 walks. He was placed on the injured list in June due to shoulder inflammation and was optioned to Triple-A once activated. The Brewers put him on waivers in July, with the Astros making a claim, though that club kept him on optional assignment and later passed him through waivers. Between the two organizations, he had a combined ERA of 6.35 in Triple-A for the year.
It was obviously not his best showing, but the White Sox were likely intrigued by his previous work. He’s always racked up big strikeout numbers in the minors, though the control has been an issue there as well. If he’s able to harness his stuff and get onto the roster, he still has an option, meaning the club could send him back to the minors without exposing him to waivers. He also has less than two years of service time, which could allow the club to retain him beyond 2024 if things go especially well.
The Sox have been focused on improving their pitching depth in recent weeks. The Aaron Bummer trade brought three arms to Chicago and the club subsequently signed Erick Fedde and then grabbed Shane Drohan in the Rule 5 draft. Cousins will give them a bit more depth in a non-roster capacity while trying to earn his way back to the big leagues.

Jake’s cousins? Like all of them?
marrtho
He is actually Kirk cousins, cousin.
Curly Was The Smart Stooge
I’ m so frustrated with you guys that I’m cousin you out (pardon my French)
Aaron Sapoznik
Yes. RHP Jake and Vikings QB Kirk are cousins. Both were born in the Chicago area, Jake in suburban Park Ridge and Kirk in Barrington, Il.
Jake’s family stayed in the area, moving to west suburban St. Charles. Jake starred at Wheaton Academy (Christian) High School in West Chicago. He pitched college ball at the University of Pennsylvania and was drafted by the Nationals in the 20th round of the 2017 MLB June Amateur Draft. He had a brief low minor league run with the Nats before being released due to an injury in 2018. The next year Jake had to settle for a contract with the Independent League Schaumburg Boomers where he excelled in relief. The Brewers took notice and signed Jake to a contract that same season. He split the remainder of 2019 with the Brewers Rookie League and A Ball affiliates.
Kirk’s family moved to Holland, Michigan. He played football, baseball and basketball at Holland Christian High School before starring at QB for the Michigan State Spartans.

ASapsFables: If Kirk lived in Barrington, his family must have a lot of money. Park Ridge also has some wealthy areas.
Aaron Sapoznik
Perhaps, perhaps not. That’s a generic statement. It’s also possible they were born in hospitals in those suburbs mentioned because their moms OB/GYN delivered children there. The families could have resided in a neighboring community or even further For example, we lived in Algonquin when my wife was pregnant with out daughter. She was born in Evanston because that’s where my wife’s doctor practiced at.. 🙂

No just the one cousin that gives you your first 6-pack of beer when you’re 15 and he’s the cool older cousin you look up to.
sjwil1
go be you White Sox, be the best you you can possibly be. you sorry ass sack of an organization
IronBallsMcGinty
Yeah really. A 29 year old pitcher with some major league success to a minor league deal to add some depth. What a bunch of idiots. They should be focused on Shohei.
sjwil1
sorry, just some White Sox PTSD coming out. I’m ok now
IronBallsMcGinty
No worries. As a Sox fan myself, i totally get it. It’s just an average acquisition that all teams do and isn’t worth getting wound up over.
I don’t expect any exciting names coming to the team this off season. Sadly it is what it is and it certainly is time for a new owner. Regardless how anyone feels, Getz is the gm now and he is right about a few things. The team is not well rounded and definitely needs to be more athletic. Some of the new coaches might help with that but for now they may as well take a small step back, hope for the best and gear up for 25. Maybe they get a better group next year and get lucky. I don’t think they’ll be as bad as this past season but I’m not setting the bar very high.

Same here. 2025/2026 will be exciting for white Sox fans.

If you prefer to take a positive opinion about what the Sox are doing, I doubt you’re a true Sox fan. Do you really think Cousins and the other players Getz is signing after they’ve had a terrible season will help them be better in 2024. They’re relying on the same garbage they acquired this past season. If they want to “retool”, you don’t’t do it without signing some good players that know how to play the game. Be more realistic about what is happening.
IronBallsMcGinty
Dude, I’ve been following this team for a long time and I’m not happy about the current state they’re in. I am also realistic. Im just not gonna piss and moan or be in a bad mood about small minor league signings.

Am I true fan. Based on Chris Getz recent news I see them aiming more towards 2025 tbh. They will suck in 2024 I agree on that but with improved defense I think they could add a few extra wins (4-5 wins in my opinion). I doubt the they win 70 games but anything is possible.

A nice homecoming for the Chicagoland native

Surprised Stearns didn’t want a reunion

The worst run organization in sports, Please sell the team. Anybody who buys a ticket is part of the problem.
Aiden Awe
They are far from the worst. Its a bad organization for plenty of reasons. On the flip side, Jerry will probably sell sooner than later even though he couched it.
avenger65
Aiden: Unfortunately, he has no intention of ever selling the Sox. However, there is reason for optimism. when Reinsdorf dies, the team will be owned by his kids. He told them to keep the Bulls, but sell the Sox. The count down is on.
Aiden Awe
I agree but Jerry is 87 years old and he hinted he’s running out of time(I believe he said 10 years). They were a few rumors before he said this as well. I hope a new owner can revive this franchise.

Anybody else come here to read the ignorant comments? There is absolutely nothing wrong with this move because it’s just a minor league deal. If he gets healthy and comes back to form, cool. If he sucks in AAA oh well. He can be released.
Aiden Awe
Yeah I mean Chris Getz is sticking with his plan so I will give him that. Can’t say the same with Rick Hahn or Kenny Williams.

Welcome home Boomer.

Well they definitely are being consistent.

Idk why anybody is panicking for a minor league deal.
