Orioles Acquire Tyler Nevin

By Anthony Franco | January 22, 2024 at 7:52pm CDT

The Orioles announced they’ve reacquired infielder Tyler Nevin in a trade with the Tigers. Baltimore sends cash to Detroit, who had designated the right-handed hitter for assignment last week. The O’s now have 39 players on the 40-man roster.

Nevin heads back to Baltimore after a year away. During the 2022-23 offseason, the Orioles had designated Nevin for assignment and traded him to the Tigers for cash. The 26-year-old spent the year on the Detroit 40-man roster but worked mostly in Triple-A. He posted excellent numbers in the minors, where he raked at a .326/.400/.543 clip with 15 homers through 385 plate appearances.

That brings Nevin to a .276/.355/.464 slash in more than 1000 plate appearances at the top minor league level. He hasn’t found the same success in scattered looks against MLB pitching. He’s a .203/.310/.301 hitter in 105 big league contests over the past three seasons. Nevin played in 64 games with the Orioles from 2021-22 and got into 41 games as a Tiger.

The O’s are clearly familiar with the former Rockies draftee. With a pair of openings on the 40-man, they’ll bring him back for a minimal cost. Nevin is out of minor league options, so he’d have to break camp with the MLB team if the O’s don’t want to again DFA him. That could be a tough task on a team with plenty of infield depth, but there’s little harm for Baltimore in giving him a look in Spring Training.

Nice of them to bring him back, but it’s tough to imagine him getting much playing time at either the MLB level or even AAA unless some of those upper infield prospects are traded for a pitcher.

I wonder if this guy would still be in pro ball if he didn’t have Phil for a dad. Built in network, and Tyler’s not very good.

AAA stats were pretty wicked last year though. I get why Detroit gave him a chance. He’s a AAAA player though.

Still pretty young with plenty of team control left. Also, are the Os about ready to move a high end infield prospect or 2 for a Dylan Cease type?

This guy isn’t a sexy signing for everyone to talk about, but he’s a cheap low risk player who plays every position except C and SS/2B. He’ll not make the ML team, but get released and resigned to AAA. Not a bad guy to stash as insurance at AAA to cover injuries, or allow other players to move around.

The Orioles are all about these cheaper UT guys because it helps them move the hyped players around more freely.

That’s the thing though. The Orioles have to actually move some of those blocked prospects.

There’s not even a ton of AAA Abs available for Nevin right now. You have Ortiz, Holliday, Mayo, Norby, Beavers, Haskin, Stowers, Vavra, and probably one of Cowser or Kjerstad down there. That’s excluding guys like Fabian, Cook, etc. that’ll probably need to move up at some point soon.

You really need to move out some of the excess for someone who can contribute to the big league club at some point here.

Good points. I take that. Roster spots are getting valuable at every level now.youre right on that.

I guess I was just saying that, there’s some undiscovered value in there that might not be obvious based on final stats alone. The current regime has been pretty successful at finding that. And if at worst, he becomes a roster casualty, no big deal. But I’d put it this way, statistically, and age-wise, Nevin is younger and perhaps an equivalent type of player that Ryan O’Hearn was this time last year. So maybe Elias and Mejdal is going mining again here?

        In Sig we trust!

          @base

Maybe. But idk what the intrigue in Nevin’s game would’ve been considering we DFA’d him a year ago. Feels like the O’s want to sneak him through waivers here.

Fixing a player from someone else’s system has a low success rate. Nevin is a product from Baltimore’s system, that Detroit couldn’t fix. Now that they have him back, what are they going to do? Shout louder?

Good luck to him, theres a ton of position player talent hear so he’ll need it. But you never know, some guys can flip the switch to become productive major leaguers. The fact that Elias and Mejdal are bringing him back says something about his talent level.

Statistically annd age-wise, Nevin is younger and perhaps a similar career castoff type of AAAA player that Ryan O’Hearn was this time last year. So maybe Elias and Mejdal is rolling the dice again here? But at worst, he’s low risk?

It’s a no risk move for Baltimore.

As a person who follows the Tigers, I believe that he was taking up a roster spot, but if Baltimore is strong enough to hold onto a 1b/ DH type, good for them

O’s ML and AAA rosters are stacked with infielders and utility players, I don’t really see any playing time for him at either place. My guess is one or two prospects get traded sometime before opening day and Nevin will fill the AAA utility role.

I think it’s kind of cool he’s going to get to play with the guys again. I bet they’re happy about it too. They wouldn’t be bringing him back if he acted like Jack Flaherty. He must be well liked, and it’s always a solid below deck move to stock up on serviceable replacements. A lot of these young O hitters have come up are all coming up together. It won’t last forever, but for now it’s kind of cool they like each other so much and they’re are having fun and they’re f’n awesome. I hope he sticks. Norfolk’s got a title to defend.
