Six Teams Interested In Ryan Brasier

By Mark Polishuk | January 6, 2024 at 8:45am CDT

Free agent reliever Ryan Brasier is drawing interest from at least six different teams, according to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and Jon Heyman of the New York Post.  Goold writes that the Cardinals and Dodgers are involved in the market, while Heyman writes that the Angels, Cubs, Orioles, and Rangers also have interest.

Brasier has already pitched for both Los Angeles teams, as he made his MLB debut with nine innings for the Angels back in 2013 and then seemingly got his career back on track with the Dodgers last season.  The right-hander posted a 6.16 ERA over 83 1/3 innings with the Red Sox in 2021 and in the first two months of the 2022 campaign before he was released, and then signed to a minor league contract by the Dodgers in June.

Secondary metrics (especially in 2022) indicated that Brasier was pitching better than his ERA would indicate, and the turn-around came once he donned Dodger Blue.  L.A. selected Brasier’s contract in late June and he was almost untouchable the rest of the way, posting an 0.70 ERA over 38 2/3 innings out of the Dodgers’ bullpen.  Brasier had a 26.6% strikeout rate, 7% walk rate, and 51.1% grounder rate as a Dodger — all major improvements over his numbers in Boston last year, though Brasier also enjoyed a .183 BABIP in Los Angeles, as opposed to a .344 BABIP with the Red Sox.

As The Athletic’s Chad Jennings explored in August, Brasier started throwing a cutter for the first time in his career and the results were immediate.  Not only did batters hit only .152 against Brasier’s new offering, he noted that “having another pitch to get guys off certain other pitches.  But (while) working on the cutter, some other stuff started to come back.”

The cutter’s effectiveness adds yet another wrinkle to the up-and-down nature of Brasier’s career.  After his cup of coffee with the Angels in 2013, he didn’t return to the majors until 2018, as the righty spent the interim years pitching with the Athletics’ Triple-A team and with the Hiroshima Carp in Japan.  Brasier returned to North America by signing a minors deal with the Red Sox in 2018, and he unexpectedly emerged as a key bullpen weapon for the eventual World Series champions.  Brasier had a 1.60 ERA over 33 2/3 regular-season innings for the Sox that season, plus a 1.04 ERA in 8 2/3 postseason frames.

The remainder of Brasier’s time in Boston was much shakier, as he ended up with a 4.55 ERA over his 209 2/3 career innings in a Red Sox uniform.  As he now enters his age-36 season, however, Brasier again seems like an intriguing relief option given how well he pitched with the Dodgers.  His age and somewhat inconsistent track record could limit him to a one-year contract, yet with so much interest in his market, Brasier might be able to land some type of option for the 2025 season depending on how sold teams are with his late-season performance.

Stay with the Dodgers. Keep your career on track and approach free agency in a year or two. Hopefully you continue to do well and get a bigger contract next year or in 2025.

Craig Kimmel was getting 10 million dollar/ 1 yr contracts at 37 and 38 of age. He can get a bigger contract if he pitches well this year. It would be his retirement paycheck

Craig Kimbrel has been one of the the greatest closers of this generation 417 saves.

          Braiser has 10.

Horrible comparison. Closers get $$$. Relief guys make less.

Ok then, Kris Benson switch to reliever and made double what he did on his first year as a reliever. Jenson nailed a 18 million contract at age 36.

          Wtf are you talking about?

Kris Benson started every game he played from 1999-2006

He only pitched till 35 so idk how he got 18 mill at 36 especially coming off 8.46 era at 34 with Texas and 5.14 with Arizona at 35

Are you talking about Kenly Jansen? Another closer nailing 18 mill at 36? Weird cause he was 35 last year and again he had 391 saves coming into last season. One of this generations greatest closers too.

He’s 36 and I am sure is ready for a decent payday. I bet he can secure a real nice 2nd year team option with a modest buyout. If he continues pitching like he did with the Dodgers he will definitely get an expensive option exercised. If he comes back to earth hard he pads next years paycheck with another million or so buyout. Smart way for a 36 y/o reliever to cash in on a monster half season imho.

I don’t know about that man. I think Kirby Yates has a firm grip on that title. I’m pretty sure Yankee fans were set to run him out of town with torches and pitchforks if he ever suited up for them again. Only Yankee players I can remember catching more flak in the past couple decades was Joey Gallo and Carl Pavano. I have a feeling Rodon will be on that list in a couple of years too.

You aren’t wrong but after Imanga and maybe a cease / Luzardo / Burnes trade, the market is going to start shifting as players for a TOR minimize somewhat.

He will he sitting on the next pile of guys and they are all fighting for less spots as the process goes.

I think pressure to get them all set in motion will be triggered by Imanaga and/or a trade.

To some degree he also has his position players to satisfy and there are some teams that will fall of the market for position player if they commit a lot of money or a trade for SP because of their total budget – or what they acquire with the SP in trade.

Great. (facetious). Sign him up for a two year deal and watch him crater half way through Year 1. Sorry the guy will refuse a demotion to AAA mid season 2024, become a free agent again and languish in “Bad Reliever Purgatory” until the day before the trade deadline. Some team hoping to make the playoffs will sign him out of desperation, try to depend on him in a couple of high leverage situations only to watch in agony as he converts a one run lead into a three run deficit on six pitches, sneering all the way. Can you tell that I watched this unfold multiple times at Fenway?

Do you think guys like this go to another team and the pitching coach sees something that they are doing mechanically that makes them ineffective and they address it? What makes such a stark contrast in a pitcher’s efficiency?

Eddie – It was all over the news. This is one of many reasons why Bush was fired.

The Dodgers reportedly changed the shape and tilt of Brasier’s slider making it almost unhittable while he was working in Arizona. As Brasier told Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic, the team also helped with his fastball and asked him to integrate a cutter.

I think you probably meant lightening in a bottle. Still I think with pitchers it’s easy to underestimate the value of coaching and catching to their performance. The Dodgers had Anderson shake up his pitch mix so that at least party explains his success with them. Fully sustainable? Probably not, but it does raise the question of whether the Angels understood what was working for him. Brasier is also highly unlikely to repeat his dominant performance from last year with the Dodgers but it also isn’t beyond imagining that his best chance of being effective again is with the Dodgers. Whether they go after him depends on what they are expecting from some of the bullpen question marks, especially Almonte and Treinan.

He will turn 37 in season, this is likely the last contract of his career so imagine it’s about the money at this point of his career. Given his performance after landing with the dodgers it’s not absurd to think he could land a 2yr deal, maybe incentive laden contract.

          Weaver called him 2-pack

Article is wrong. He was good in limited time in 2021. He was bad in 2022 and the first two months of 2023 before being released.

Forecasted Run Average of 4.51 is concerning for any team trying to sign him. That difference between ERA and FRA suggests he regressed in 2024.

Hard not to regress from 0.70

Even harder to have “regressed” in a season that hasn’t happened yet.

Dodgers got him, gave him a new weapon and pitch mix that was unfamiliar to the league, put him in favorable situations with favorable matchups and, surprise, it worked.
Put a 36 year old with a spotty track record in less favorable matchups and expect him to plow through lineups while anchoring your pen and you’re asking for trouble.

His track record isn’t quite as spotty as you might imagine. The usual ups and downs for a reliever but respectable overall.

It’s perfectly respectable, and in a similar role utilized the same way I’d expect a sub 3 era. But he’ll be paid for more than that role and utilized accordingly and it might not be as pretty

See first half of his season… cue Alex…seriously he was giving many opportunities.. sooner or later you have to get mlb batters out and well he didn’t 9/10 times… but he’s still a nice man and I hope he comes back to Boston!!! He’d be as welcome as Bucky Dent

Olm – I’m glad you didn’t say Buckner, because he actually was embraced by Sox Nation when he returned as a hitting coach.

Fever …again my roots are not from Boston but trust me .. I bled RED!!( check that so does everyone else) anyways NEVER blamed BB.. I Was happy to see him out there in 10th… as well as Pedro being left in and disappointed the Bulls didn’t draft Bowie.. so many things go unnoticed in life/ sports but what’s remembered isn’t the whole story… Steamer/Gedman/Calvin… when anyone started with Bill I would politely go for another beer/ same here in Chicago anyone who said Bartman.. I left for another slice of deep dish.. I would not argue with anyone who said that they were the major/ sole blame… they were the scapegoats to many others…Bucky Dent…. I get it … but it was Jackson blast in 8th that was decided run( off of my 1st favorite RP in Redsox history) I tend to look at the good fortune in the past few.. umpires getting both calls right in 04/.. Clark’s ground rule double.. In closing I think a fair offer to Brais would be $25(a hour) free Fenway franks( limit 2 per game) beer sales after bottom of 7th inning and his old number 70..,, thoughts???

Intersting point on the 78 game many who didnt see the game dont even realize dents homer was in the 7th followed by the deciding run in the 8th before the sox would score 2 in the bot 8th then shutout in the 9th.

Yup there are fans of the Redsox and then there is some whacked out kid in Chicago that filled his mind with the little useless nuggets like above. Mussina in 2003… you know the stuff overlooked THAT led to the tragic endings… actually listened to 78 playoff game on hand radio.. ( 7 grade) when yaz hit HR went Yeahhhhhhh!!! Cost me radio and detention… ran home just in time to see Dent…( damn whitesox trade) and gossage I think!!

6.16 ERA seems like someone we’d be shooting for right now. We will stretch him out as our second starter behind Gray

He’s 36! Sign him up, Cardinals – it would fit with the retirement home pitching staff assembled by MO this year.
