Manfred: Toronto, Chicago Could Host Upcoming All-Star Games

By Anthony Franco | February 16, 2024 at 10:54pm CDT

Commissioner Rob Manfred addressed future All-Star host sites as part of his media scrum on Thursday. While the plans have not been finalized, Manfred implied that the Blue Jays and Cubs have good chances to host the festivities in 2027 and ’28 (link via Evan Drellich of the Athletic).

“With respect to those two years, I am strongly influenced by two things. One, when did you last have a game? Toronto stacks up pretty well on that variable. I think Chicago is older,” the commissioner said. “The city being willing to step up on those issues is the other big variable. Our All-Star (events), what’s become most of the week, we need certain facilities and certain kinds of support in terms of security.”

Toronto has not hosted the All-Star Game since 1991, the only such time in franchise history. The city of Chicago has hosted seven times, more than any other save New York. Chicago last hosted in 2003, although that was at the White Sox’s stadium (then known as U.S. Cellular Field). The All-Star Game was last played at Wrigley Field in 1990. The Friendly Confines has hosted on three occasions: 1947, ’62, and ’90.

The next three All-Star host cities are already finalized. It’ll be in Arlington this summer, the first time Texas hosts since opening Globe Life Field four years ago. The festivities go Atlanta in 2025. (The Braves were originally slated to host in 2021 but MLB moved that year’s game to Colorado in response to Georgia election laws.) Philadelphia was awarded the ’26 Midsummer Classic to coincide with celebrations of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.

The 2027-28 games will be the final of Manfred’s tenure as commissioner. He announced yesterday that he’ll retire at the end of his current term in January ’29.

cpts – Yep, further proof that first comments are often the lamest.

Fine if they didn’t already know, but at least read the damn article before rushing to get first post. Sheesh!

Atlanta should get multiple All-Star games in the near future to make up for the 2021 screw job by Manfred.

Stay, still time for Manfred to order them to hang a huge “We’re So Sorry” banner from behind the plate.

Enough time before the 2025 AS game for the Atlanta ball club to make engaging in the tomahawk chop an offense resulting in a lifetime stadium ban. It would also be a wonderful occasion to introduce the new logo for the Atlanta Rainbow.

It’s borderline criminal that OPACY, one of the most beautiful and historic parks in all of MLB, is going to go at least 36 years between ASG’s.

To be fair, it’s been longer for Wrigley Field and the Rogers Centre. I imagine though that once the Angelos family is out Baltimore will be in the mix again for a game again

It was more of a general statement and not necessarily directed towards Toronto and Chicago, which definitely both have valid claims as well, but there are several stadiums that have hosted it more than once since 1992 (Seattle, Cleveland, and Colorado IIRC).

King – Here’s part of the above article that it seems you missed:

“Our All-Star (events), what’s become most of the week, we need certain facilities and certain kinds of support in terms of security.””

Baltimore is ranked 2nd-most dangerous city behind only Detroit.

If that’s the case than Chicago should be out of the running as well

So have stupid BP and home run derby jerseys but wear real ones for the game.

I’ll do you one better: have players in an embellished version of their home uniforms.

Add a patch, put a colored contrast piping around the number and letters on the back.

Then your input costs are lower as it modified the existing design, while also giving mlb the revenue driver for uniqueness it wants.

I’m 60 and Cubs have hosted one ASG in my life. I took family to one out of town ASG and we had a great time. I have wanted to see the game at Wrigley since I was a kid.

Wouldn’t really be a fan experience tho. The place is a nightmare, very limited seating each time they’ve done a game at this location mlb and teams had most tickets reserved. I don’t live very far everyone around here is annoyed because it’s turned into something for mlb employees and families of players not average fans.

Why should a team be punished because they are in a dual team city? Cubs haven’t had it since 1990 so makes sense, over 30 yrs.

That falls under construction of pros and cons. I’m sure many day “why can’t my city I have an AL and NL team?”. Sometimes we just can’t have it all.

Jays continue to renovate inside the old dome. Makes sense they are part of the discussion. Wrigley also had a makeover so they should be in consideration.

Manfred can’t retire fast enough. He has completely destroyed baseball and doesn’t deserve the monstrous salary he gets paid.
